In Praise of Autumn

October 2020

by Ruth Isenberg

Ruth Isenberg, Editor Seth Isenberg, Ads / Distribution Publishers (Continuing the work of founders Frank Pieri and Mary Farnschlader, 1995 – 2018)

Fall is not my favorite season—it’s too close to winter. But I enjoy the colors, the crispness of the air, the chance to savor the last bits of extended summer. I’ll take any chance I can get to sit in the sun and enjoy the reflection of the red and gold leaves in the now quieter Lake. Autumn is a new beginning. Even this year, with schools on-line and many workplaces moved to kitchen tables, there’s a sense that we are starting over — and this year, that may be an especially good thing. Autumn also marks the end of the election season, and that can’t come soon enough, in my opinion. It should mean the end of the deluge of e-mails, texts and phone calls urging me to vote for, or even worse, donate to one candidate or another. (I get particularly annoyed about the requests to donate to out-of-state candidates — of either party.) Apples, cider, bonfires, bountiful baskets of produce, Halloween decorations and candy—that’s a lot to like. Fall may not be my favorite season, but it offers a great deal to enjoy.

On The Road by Seth Isenberg It’s foliage season. Ruth and I spend a great deal of our free time at this time of year driving around the Pocono Plateau in search of bright displays of color. Lake Harmony and nearby have been sites for terrific displays of brilliant gold, yellow, red, orange and maroon leaves. This summer’s dry weather has really set up a wonderful show. Of course there will be a price to pay, leaf raking, but it’s a price I’m willing to pay. Now that the two of us are dog owners again, having adopted a young Schnauzer-like terrier mix momma dog from one local rescue and then two weeks later rescued a big spoiled German shorthaired pointer boy, leaf raking has a new urgency in the yards. I’m re-learning dog skills, including the need for a pair of yard shoes… Our road trip of the month was actually a treasure hunt of sorts, out in search of some fresh-picked Stayman-Winesap apples. These crispy, tart treats ripen for picking in October. Early this month, we made a stop at Heckman’s Orchards in Effort to check out their selection. No Staymans there, but we did get a nice mix of other varieties for the house. The next day, we took a longer drive to Ritter’s Cider Mill in Mt. Cobb, so combined a leaf-peeping trip with the search. We have learned that Ritter’s always has a bin of them, along with a wide variety of the more popular apples. Ritter’s Cider Mill is a bit of a tourist trap, but fun. Part of the appeal is that they make cider donuts, sell homemade pies and desserts like pumpkin cream cheese rolls. Most importantly,

they fresh-press cider nearly daily. The Stayman-Winesaps bin was half empty already. They were beautiful, though somewhat small this season. We left with a half peck of beautiful apples, plus a gallon of that day’s cider, and six hot donuts. There were lots of young children and their parents out at the corn maze, or in line for the hay ride. In line for apples and cider,

just in front of us, was an older man with his mom…the kid taking the parent out… Ritter’s Cider Mill is about an hour’s drive, most easily found from the Mt. Cobb exit of Interstate 84 (take a right at the traffic signal, then head east and start looking for the signs for the road Ritter’s Cider Mill is on, about three miles in from the state road). Looking ahead, our next road trip should be to the PA Renaissance Faire in Mt. Joy in Lancaster County on one of the remaining October weekend days. This year, their season runs until November 1. The Faire “Shire” is located north of Manheim, about two hours away. Another possible road trip is to Knoebels Amusement Resort during their Hallo-Fun season Fridays to Sundays to Nov. 1. There, we’d make it an evening trip to enjoy their Halloween light show along with a few rides. To our readers – be safe, but get out to enjoy this beautiful season, and please support local businesses.

Lake Harmony Post Office Notes by Christine Gilliar

Happy Fall everyone! This is my favorite time of year, no bugs attacking while enjoying chilly mornings that heat up to beautiful afternoons. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the U.S.Postal Service (USPS) is reminding customers they can help fund the cause by purchasing the Breast Cancer Research Stamp. These 65cent self-adhesive semi postal stamps are available yearround in sheets of 20 to help raise funds for breast cancer research.

Mail-in primary election ballots Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court extended the due date for mail ballots in the November election, a decision that will likely result in more votes being counted in the state — and more time to determine the final results. Mail-in ballots in Pennsylvania have previously

been due by the time polls close on Election Day. But the court’s order adds a three-day extension to receive ballots that are postmarked by 8 p.m. on Election Day. Ballots with a preelection postmark will now be counted as long as they are received by 5 p.m. on Nov. 6, three days after the polls close.

Drug Free USA stamp arrives soon The Drug Free USA stamp will feature a white star with lines of red, light blue and blue streaming from one side of each of the star’s five points, suggesting the unity necessary to effectively address drug abuse. The Postal Service will help raise awareness of the dangers of drug abuse when it releases its Drug Free USA stamp on Oct. 27. The stamp, which USPS announced last fall, will arrive during Red Ribbon Week, which is held each year from Oct. 23-31 to promote drug abuse awareness and prevention. See POST OFFICE NOTES, page 10

Sponsored by the National Family Partnership, Red Ribbon Week participants wear a red ribbon or red to symbolize their dedication to preventing drug abuse. The Drug Free USA stamp will feature a prominent white star on a dark blue background with red, light blue and blue lines streaming from each of the star’s five corners. The artwork is meant to represent the unity needed by to effectively address drug abuse. Greg Breeding designed with stamp with original artwork by Aaron Draplin. William J. Gicker served as art director. The Drug Free USA stamp will be available at Post Offices and usps.com. I’d like to apologize when I accidentally put a piece of mail into your PO box that is either addressed correctly but does NOT go there, or it is NOT the correct PO Box #. I appreciate the people who drop it into the local slot without opening it or writing on it! Let’s all REMEMBER I am human just like all of YOU! Trust me, I do NOT purposely try to make a

mistakes. Maybe old age kicking in? However as much as I focus on each piece of mail & each name & address, unfortunately it will still occasional happens. This is very important, when someone is staying with you and is putting a forward in, they need to stop in with ID to be added to the PO Box as soon as possible. One must be a picture ID, as in driver’s license, and one proof they live at the new address. If they cannot prove both, we can simply contact the address you’re coming from to prove you live there. It is on our applications; it is not something we made up. We can hold mail for 10 days before sending mail back. We do put a note in your box explaining that to give the person a chance to come in. We would like to welcome all the new home owners. There’s a lot to take in when buying and moving but one thing we’d like you to do is PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE ALWAYS USE YOUR PO BOX #. Too many new people moving in are using physical addresses only. You have to insist on using your PO BOX # on any & all mail. If a company says they CAN NOT take a PO BOX you See POST OFFICE NOTES, page 12

need to use your Name, House # Street Name, BOX #, Lake Harmony PA 18624 Also for packages since you know what is right around the corner we don’t want to delay any. Please get in the habit of the same for return addresses too. I want to THANK all of you that are getting your PO Box # on your mail and packages. For example, today I received 8 cards with no po box #s, just names and physical address. I looked them up and found 1 out of 8. Which means they are either not in the system yet or do not have PO boxes with us and NO return addresses so they end up going to DEAD LETTER and the customer will never know that they were not good addresses. This is happening more and more as new owners are moving in. So FUN FACT: If you live in Lake Harmony PO BOX is a must!! Po box rental fees are as low as 26.00 for 6 months & 8.00 for two keys for a small PO BOX. So even if you’re here for 3 months you get a refund of whatever time you’re not here plus the deposit on the keys, then we can hold packages up to 15 days before they are failures. Please return your yellow card for packages. If we are NOT here you can leave them in your PO box for when we are here. We do pay for them and are ordering new ones all the time. The less we spend on things like that the more we can spend on beautiful carpets! Yes — two of them are new. Plus we have our fingers crossed to keep our doors open. With all the changes going on with the Post office these days and with the lease being up for

renewal, holding my breath we continue to serve you here in our cute, clean, organized office in beautiful Lake Harmony. Since we are a small office we are trying to keep our revenue going up and costs down. That’s why I Thank You for your business because if it wasn’t for you we would NOT exist! Last month I posted the new stamps but not the dates they will be available for sale. Again I apologize, thank you for the

reader who called asking. Winter Scenes is Oct. 16, Holiday Delights are available now. We also have the wreaths from last year and Madonna and child. We are looking into ordering more that will be coming out also. If you’re good on ordering on line you can check this out: www.uspsstamps.com If I may take a moment and say a few words about Walter. others who knew Walter, was shocked to learn of his passing. Walter was never hard to find. He was either on the green chair at the Deli or on the picnic bench. He always knew it was me pulling out after work, he wouldn’t look my way but I always looked his way and his hand would go up in the air. I would smile, wave back and say good night Walter, see you tomorrow.

Walter is with my Daddy who left us Jan. 17 of this year and all the other great people that left us too soon. May they all R.I.P. I was taught there was an afterlife in Heaven so I’m sure they getting to know each other and have many new stories to tell and listen to too. I loved all the stories Walter told me — some were very shocking about what he went through. Plus I think there are so many cool Hollywood stars and Rock stars who are blowing it up at night and having a ball. Whatever helps us sleep at night without crying ourselves to sleep works for me! I sleep with one of my Daddy’s t-shirts on every night so it’s like my Daddy is hugging me. I will forever wave to Walter after work and say goodnight and see you tomorrow, Walter. Pocono Outdoors Fall Foliage Report

Peaking in the Poconos, Fall Foliage is on fire by Tom Williams Fall Foliage Leaf Spotter for PoconoOutdoors.com

The vibrant colors abound, an explosion of sights and scents. The recent frosts and cool nights in the higher elevations of the Pocono Plateau are pushing the boundaries of the forest’s color palette. Many species are revealing their inner self; black gums, birches, and maples are igniting reds, oranges and yellows throughout Penn’s Woods. Summer drought conditions throughout the Poconos as expected are shortening a vibrant peak season, however, with a relatively low occurrence of leaf spot diseases will help to keep the fall foliage season going into late October. As of last week’s rain event, some trees have dropped their leaves early, mostly affecting sugar maple.

of its best fall color in years. Red and sugar maples are peaking this weekend, but recent wind and rain have dropped many leaves. Remaining are cherry, ash, basswood, and aspen, they are showing awesome bright color. Birches, basswood, walnut, and aspen have been changing rapidly. Many trees are still green in this region like oaks in lower altitudes, but they are dropping their acorns, so gather them up for crafts. Common along rivers in the Poconos, sycamores, are turning golden browns and yellows. Virginia creeper, a native vine wraps itself around stout trees, is showing shades of red.

The Fall Foliage peak color in the Central Poconos Region will be mid-October. Southern Poconos (southern Monroe and Carbon County): In following step with the Northern and Central Regions, the Southern has changed quickly over the last week and is progressing toward an early peak. Most maples, birches and aspens are showing flaming scarlet, orange, and yellow leaves. Vivid colors of cherries stand out like fire against the deep greens of mixed oaks and beech. Huckleberry and blueberry are reddish. This explosion of sumac, sassafras, cherry, poplar and aspen are painting a wide color palette in the region. The Fall Foliage peak color in the Southern Poconos Region will be around the weekend of October 24. Help Safeguard the People and Possessions That Matter Most Joe Geiser, State Farm® Agent Build a Triangle of Protection® Around Your Home and Family

How would you and your family cope financially if you became ill or injured and couldn't work, if your home were seriously damaged, or if you died unexpectedly? If you're not sure where the money would come from, we can help you identify the protection you may need to help keep your family and home secure. Your State Farm® agent can put together a triangle of protection for you — life, disability income, and homeowners insurance. A Triangle of Protection, A Reasonable Solution

Your homeowners insurance policy is a great first step toward protecting your home and possessions. But it's only one part of your financial picture. Too many people lose their homes because they don't have insurance coverage that provides funds in case of death or disability. We can help you establish a triangle of protection that includes: • • •

Life insurance, which may be used to help pay off your mortgage and keep your family in your home if you die prematurely Disability income insurance, which may help you make mortgage payments if you're unable to work due to a covered disability Homeowners insurance, which offers protection for damage to your home, the roof over your head, and your belongings inside

Do You Have Enough Life Insurance?

Ask yourself how much your family will need after your death to meet immediate expenses - and then how much they'll need long-term to maintain their standard of living. Do you have enough life insurance to help your family cover outstanding bills, pay off a mortgage, fund a retirement, or cover a child's education? Life insurance is a key component of the triangle of protection because it helps provide the funds your family may need for the future. Are You Covered for a Disabling Injury or Illness?

Many people underestimate the risks of becoming disabled, and aren't prepared financially for the months or years it may take to recover. In fact, 1 in 5 Americans live with a disability, and 1 in 10 Americans live with a severe disability1 . If you stopped earning an income because of an injury or illness, could you pay your mortgage? What about expenses like child care, utilities, groceries, credit card payments, and medical bills? Disability income insurance is another critical piece of the triangle of protection because it can help you and your family cover these costs. Kidder continues to combat nuisances by Seth Isenberg After a busy summer of meetings with dozens of citizens attending Kidder Township supervisor meetings to complain about nuisances, September’s meeting was very quiet. Instead of an overflow crowd, six citizens attended. The key decision of the previous meetings was to hire a full-time code enforcement officer, Noel Torres. As of this meeting, he was continuing with his training, and was reported to be ‘doing well’ by supervisor Bing LaFond, who chaired the meeting since supervisors chairman Tom Bradley was attending by phone. LaFond added that he is “hopeful (that Torres’ work) will be a real help” to township residents in controlling noise and nuisance issues. The meeting itself was quiet. This season’s snow removal contract for township roads was awarded to Wernett Excavating for $65 an hour for a See KIDDER TWP., page 30

small plow truck, plus materials costs for anti-skid and any road salt mixes. Supervisors renewed a garbage pickup contract for five years with County Waste, who was low bidder at $1,715,364, and includes bulk item pickups. County Waste is now a division of GFL Environmental of Ontario, Canada. Signal Services of West Chester, PA, was awarded a two-year contract to maintain the township’s four sets of traffic signals. Supervisors were unanimous on all of these, and to make an application for 2020 gaming funds money. The engineer for the proposed subdivision of a property on Spring and Birch Streets in Lake Harmony Estates came before supervisors seeking final approval of the project. Supervisor Ray Gluck pointed out that there were still open issues with the plan, with the biggest being paving of the paper street that the developer proposes to reopen. It was decided to table the issue until October’s meeting. Roadmaster Bruce Berger declared the Kirk Street project ‘done,’ as is the Henning Road emergency repair. The blacktopping on Kresge Lane should be finished by the end of the month. He added that his crew is “all set for winter.” Township manager Suzanne Brooks reported paying $12,632 for the Henning Road repair. She received unanimous support of supervisors for holding the first township budget meeting on See KIDDER TWP., page 31

October 28 at 7 p.m. Spotted lanternflies have been seen in the township, and she encourages people who see them to kill them, then call in to 1-888-4BADFLY to help the PA Department of Agriculture track them. In reports, a letter from Frank Gilotti, Jr., president of the township’s Environmental Advisory Council (EAC), was read. “The Kidder Township EAC would like to acknowledge and applaud the recent efforts of the Lake Harmony Group [Association] and the Lake Harmony stormwater members for their work in abating and controlling stormwater in Lake Harmony. The recent project in the Lake Harmony district will serve to minimize soil erosion, and improve water quality in the lake. Thank you for your community efforts.” In the Police report, chief Matthew Kuzma noted another busy month, and reported that the vehicle that had been out of service was back from the body shop. The newly ordered police truck is due to be delivered in early October. Police commit-

tee chairman LaFond added a “thank you, to the people of your department” for the work they have been doing. Bills of $113,120 were approved for payment, along with funding pension obligations for 2021 for the police, at $152,104, and for the township’s non-uniformed pension obligation of $8,363. Supervisors approved the list from Carbon County Tax Claim of three properties in the township that were bought at tax sale, and are now returned to the tax rolls. Attending this meeting were supervisors LeFond, Berger, Gluck and Louis Pantages, with Thomas Bradley by phone, along with manager Brooks, chief Kuzma, one staff member, two press members and the six citizens. Coming up is the Kidder Township’s electronics recycling day, on Saturday, October 17. It will be parked at the municipal building from 9 a.m. until the truck is full – no later than noon. Check the township website for the list of items accepted, and fees for things like TVs and refrigerators. The next meeting is October 15 at the municipal building on Lake Ave. in Lake Harmony, starting at 6:30 p.m. The meeting is in person, socially distanced with limited audience attendance.

Voting by mail broken down If you’re voting by mail in Pennsylvania, there is a specific way to complete the form and send it to your county, so that your vote is counted accurately and in a timely manner. And, it’s easy. If you’ve requested a mail-in ballot, this is what you’ll receive in the vote by mail packet – four items - an instruction sheet, your ballot, an official ballot envelope and a mailing envelope. So, first, read the instructions then complete the mail-in ballot. Then, place your completed ballot into the white Official Ballot Envelope. Seal that, then place the ballot envelope in the larger return envelope that goes to your county. You MUST use BOTH envelopes. And on that outer envelope, be sure to fill out the declaration, sign it and date it. It’s required for your vote to count. Then, just place it in the mail – it must be POSTMARKED by 8 p.m. Election Day. Or, you can deliver it to your county election office in-person by Election Day at 8 p.m. Some counties may also be providing drop boxes – check with your county for the times and locations drop boxes may available. However you return your ballot, make sure you return it as soon as possible, and make sure you follow all of the instructions. If you don’t, the law may require your ballot to be rejected. There you have it. Pennsylvania counties are always working to ensure that election results are fair, secure and accurate.

Please know that it might take a little longer this year for our counties to finish counting ballots, but no matter when counting is complete, you can trust that your vote has been counted. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to contact your county elections office. Source — County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania

Help for renters and homeowners with homes at risk due to pandemic The Pennsylvania Bar Association, along with 26 county bar associations including the Carbon County Bar Association, has launched the “Pandemic preparedness: When your home is at risk” public information campaign. Part of a statewide effort co-sponsored by the PBA, the Pennsylvania Bar Trust Fund and county bar associations across the state, the campaign was developed to increase the public’s understanding of their rights when renting or owning a home, with a special focus on the impact from the pandemic. “With unemployment rates at an all-time high in Pennsylvania, many residents are still feeling negative financial impacts of COVID-19, especially when it comes to their homes,” said PBA President David E. Schwager. “Missed rent and mortgage payments are piling up, and while some temporary protections and programs for renters and borrowers have been put in place, many will need help once they end. What rights, if any, will they have if their homes are in jeopardy? Is there legal help

available? This public information campaign tackles these issues and more.” The main components of the campaign include two recorded presentations for potentially impacted mortgage holders and renters: one where Schwager interviews Rasheedah Phillips, managing attorney of housing policy for Community Legal Services of Philadelphia about rental eviction and another about mortgage foreclosures with Schwager interviewing Lori Toia, director of the Home Emergency Mortgage Association Program at the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency; free informational brochures for renters and for mortgage holders with essentials on the home renting and homebuying process and expectations; fact sheets about the mortgage foreclosure and rental eviction process and current support that is available, and online links to other resources.
