Thankful for Thanksgiving by Ruth Isenberg
Thanksgiving is a special holiday. Unlike Easter and Christmas, it is not tied to a religion, although most faiths emphasize being thankful. Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Independence Day, it is not associated with war or the military, although those who have fought for our country are among the things for which we should be thankful. And unlike Columbus Day or Martin Luther King Day, it does not center on a specific person or group. Thanksgiving is for everyone – an opportunity to recognize the many blessings we have, and to express appreciation. For most people, it centers on sharing food and time with family and friends. It’s a break from the relentless commercialism of modern life, providing a pause in which we can reflect on the positive, the good, and the beautiful. I’m thankful for Thanksgiving. It ushers in a season of light and love, and reminds us of what really matters.

Mushrooms and Mistletoe—A Christmas Story by Mark Peterson
The holidays are upon us. It is a magical time of year when we visit with friends and family, share holiday feasts, give and receive gifts, and generally freak out from all the stress (correction — I mean bask in the joy of the season). We practice holiday traditions mostly without thinking about how they came to be. For example, did you ever wonder why reindeer fly? Why do we decorate our homes with boughs of holly and kiss under mistletoe? Why does Santa wear red and white, and what is the story behind mushrooms on Victorian era Christmas cards? You may have seen antique Christmas cards or ornaments that look curiously like the mushroom emoji on your cellphone. These decorations represent the psychedelic fly agaric mushroom (Amanita muscaria) that typically grows under pine trees. A favorite of reindeer in the northern latitudes, the deer have been known
to eat the mushrooms, possibly experiencing the hallucinogenic effects. Seeing reindeer under the influence might explain why they can be observed prancing about. Not wanting to miss out on a good time, our ancestors tried them too. Some of the reported hallucinations include seeing little people (elves?) and flying reindeer. Before computers and smartphones, people did not have the Internet to trick them into believing things that are not true, so they made stuff up. For example, they thought there were spirits everywhere and that witches could walk through walls. To keep those pesky spirits from sneaking into their homes, they would decorate them with See MUSHROOMS, page 6

holly — the idea being that the sharp leaves would act like a natural barbed wire fence. Another tradition involves mistletoe, a parasitic plant that is only found on tree branches, hence the practice of hanging it. We kiss under the mistletoe based on the ancient belief that it represents peace and/or fertility. Then there is St. Nicholas, a 4th Century Greek bishop from Myra in modern-day Turkey. The name Santa Claus comes from the Dutch name for the bishop: Sint-Nicolaas or Sinterklaas. Somehow, this saint ended up being conflated with a Norse shaman who would collect the red and white mushrooms that seemed to appear overnight under pine trees about the time of the winter solstice. Dressed in red with white trim that echoed the color of the mushrooms, the shaman would go from home to home with his sack of ‘presents,’ which would then be hung by the fire to dry. As far as coming down the chimney is concerned, your guess is as good as mine. It has been suggested that in places where you could be snowed in for months, the only way to get into the house is through a hole in the roof. If you were to ask if I believe in Santa Claus — yes, I do, even if our modern-day image of Santa can be traced back to Coca-Cola advertising in the early part of the 20th century. But to be honest with you, Santa can’t do it all on his own, so he needs your help. Get over to Peterson’s Ski and Cycle in Blakeslee with your Christmas list. 3rd Warehouse in works along Rt 940 in Kidder by Seth Isenberg At November 1’s Kidder Township planning commission meeting, Blue Ridge Real Estate submitted a preliminary land development plan for a new warehouse. The 420,000 square foot building would be built into the hill near the corner of Route 940 and Walter Dam Road on 73 acres of wooded Blue Ridge property. Access would be by a driveway from Route 940 that starts across from the main driveway to and from the existing warehouse. An emergency access will also be built, controlled by a gate. Existing woods would screen the building on three sides, and the fourth side visible from Walter Dam Road will be landscaped. The east side of the building will be below some of the hill, adding to the screening. 285 parking spaces for employees will be provided, more than enough to handle the projected 195 employees. There will also be parking for 77 trailers, and 64 trailer bays. To handle extra traffic, the proposal includes a drop down lane for turning westbound vehicles, and a left turn lane for eastbound vehicles. Enhanced signage is also proposed. Sewage would be handled by the Jack Frost treatment plant. Construction of the project is likely to start in 2024. Also at the meeting, the subdivision for Wiser in Albrightsville was conditionally approved.

It creates a single lot north of Route 534 and combines two lots south of Route 534. Subdivisions from the Split Rock Country Club property of 8.34 acres and three homesites were given conditional approval – waiting on Aqua PA for their paperwork and then the sewage enforcement officer’s sign-off. The Greystone Preserve development is moving ahead. The 74-lot planned community is on 3,800 acres off Route 534 beside Hickory Run State Park. There are 59 12-acre lots, and 15 three-acre lots. Homeowners will, as a group, be owners of the preserved land. Homes would likely be from 2,500 to 7,500 square feet. Homes will have sprinkler systems for fire suppression. Lots will allow for 2 acres of disturbance for the homesite. Numerous details were discussed. Waivers for steeper slopes to the water detention basins (fewer trees cut), use of vegetation to also keep basins smaller, and to have the plan considered as “preliminary/final” were approved by the board. This done, it was agreed that the plan can be sent to Carbon County for review. The development will remain on the agenda for December’s meeting.

In search of another time—Video Time by Nicholas Vassilakos When you were born and raised alongside the hustle and bustle that New York City brings, it was always a treat for my family to be able to take a weekend trip up to our house in Albrightsville. Whether my parents knew it or not, they weren’t just driving my sister and I to Pennsylvania, they were also introducing us to an environment void of background noise that I had become accustomed to. These trips were well before the age of the smartphone, social media, and streaming services and we were encouraged to use our outings to go outside and enjoy the escape from our home in Brooklyn. Our house in Albrightsville did not have internet. We barely even had cell phone service. The only device we owned was one small television with a built-in VCR. One of the pleasures of our weekend stays in Albrightsville was the Friday evening visit to the video store, aptly named Video Time. Video Time was a small video store in the Old
(via Google Maps, October 2013) Stage Plaza on Route 903 in Albrightsville next to the D&D Cigar and Cigarette Outlet. Upon entering, I can vividly remember being greeted by “The Chicken Machine” game, which dispensed miniature eggs with prizes inside that sat to the left of the entrance. Customers would be welcomed by the worn, brown carpeting and the smell that came with stacks of used VHS tapes on shelves. Being a young child at the time, my early memories of Video Time remind me of how I was introduced to the children’s television show Goosebumps. (taken from Link - https:// goosebumps.fandom.com/ wiki/Stay_Out_of_the_ Basement/TV_episode) While R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps franchise has grown in popularity in recent years, Video Time stocked clamshell VHS tapes of several episodes that aired on Fox in 1996. I remember enjoying these episodes so much that it made it a goal to collect the sixty-two original books. My sister, on the other hand, was not fond of this episode and still brings up the nightmares it gave her to this day. Another memory that Video Time brought back was the time we rented the movie Jack Frost. You may be reminded of the 1998 Christmas fantasy comedy film starring Michael Keaton who stars as the eponymous title character. So did we. It turns out, we actually rented the 1997 black comedy
slasher film, also titled “Jack Frost”. That one did not turn out to be much of a family movie. (Left Source: https:// vhscollector. com/movie/ jack-frost-0) (Right Source: https:// vhscollector. com/movie/ jack-frost) Right about the time Video Time closed, I can even remember the last movie we rented, which was the 2004 family comedy Christmas with the Kranks. Video Time was more than just a video store to me, it brought my family the opportunity to entertain ourselves for a short, well-deserved family weekend. It started my hobby of movies and the memories have allowed me to start a new hobby, collecting used VHS tapes. While VHS movies stopped being produced in 2006, the memories they bring have been carried into 2023. At this time, I am interested in any contacts, pictures, or any shared memories of Video Time that the community can share. Please send your information to nicholas. vassilakos@gmail.com

Within minutes , crew members ran over to the buck, who was violently thrashing around. Hesitant to get near the hooves, they waited for an opportunity to intervene (as the buck got more and more stuck). The deer finally paused from exhaustion, and the crew
worked together to hold down the hindquarter, and cut the net… A quick release allowed the traumatized buck to run off to the safety of the woods…” Thank you to the Ronca crew: Jim McKeown, Kevin Beach, Harvey King, Vernon Canfield, Robert Schultz and Jeff Hartz. Sportswriter Larry O’Rourke submitted “hot topics” and other thoughts: The Eagles have won six of seven games that Donavan McNabb had QBed. Joe Paterno has earned the right to pick the timing of his retirement. “Gotta like airline pilots who deviate from the usual thanks-for-flying-with-us … the best line heard this year came from a Northwest pilot ahead of takeoff from Green Bay: “Ladies and Gentlemen and Cheeseheads, welcome aboard…” Did you know – Route 115 was formerly known as the EastonWilkes-Barre Turnpike. It was not paved until the Depression years of the 1930s. Up unitl that time, it was a dirt road with a red shale top dressing. This issue, December 2003, is 48 pages in black and white. Tragedy at Tunnel 13 USPS observes centennial of train robbery
The Postal Service recently observed the 100th anniversary of a train robbery that sparked the use of forensics by the Postal Inspection Service. Dubbed the Tragedy at Tunnel 13, the incident took place on Oct. 11, 1923, when three brothers — Hugh, Ray and Roy DeAutremont — staged one of the last major train robberies in the West. The trio targeted Southern Pacific Railroad Co. Train 13, which carried mail between Portland, OR, and San Francisco. The train’s mail and freight cars also often transported payrolls, cash, gold, bonds and other valuables. The brothers mistakenly believed Train 13, called the OregonCalifornia Express, had $500,000 in gold on board. They robbed the train outside of Ashland, OR, at Tunnel 13 in the Siskiyou Pass. Postal clerk Elvyn
The event program displays the pictorial postmark commemorating the centennial of the Tragedy at Tunnel 13, as well as a photo of the tunnel and the train that was robbed by the DeAutremont brothers. Daugherty and Southern Pacific Railroad employees Sydney Bates, Charles Orin Johnson and Marvin Seng were killed. Post Office inspectors — law enforcement agents now known as postal inspectors — launched an intense four-year search for the brothers. The inspectors worked with other law enforcement officers from Oregon and California, and investigative teams from Southern Pacific Railroad and the Oregon National Guard. See PO NOTES, page 21

Those posters are credited with leading to the brothers being found and arrested in 1927. The investigation and manhunt used forensic science techniques that were quite advanced for the time. As a result, the case helped pave the way for investigative methods that are used today. “Postal inspectors left no stone unturned as they headed up the largest manhunt in history and brought the killers to justice,” Chief Postal Inspector Gary Barksdale said in a news release. “While theft of mail from trains is not as common today, the safety and security of postal employees remains a top priority for the Postal Inspection Service.” Today, postal inspectors operate in the United States and abroad to enforce more than 200 federal statutes related to crimes involving the See PO NOTES, page 22 One of the reward posters distributed in the manhunt for train robbers Hugh, Ray and Roy DeAutremont.

Postal Service and its networks, employees and customers. As part of the centennial observance, the Ashland, OR, Post Office offered customers a special pictorial postmark Oct. 9-13 with an image designed by Dan Mihalko, a retired postal inspector. The tragedy had a lasting effect in Southern Oregon and Northern California, where the four victims, their families and coworkers resided. The crime, the search for the perpetrators and their trials received much attention throughout the 1920s. The details of the event have since been the subject of stories retold in song, on film, in history and comic books, in documentaries and in podcasts. The history of the victims, the crime and its legacy is also the subject of a Smithsonian National Postal Museum virtual exhibit. Pocono NASCAR Weekend awarded Event of the Year
PRLA Awards Pocono Raceway Coveted Designation at Yearly Event Pocono Raceway has been awarded “Event of the Year” by the Pennsylvania Restaurant and Lodging Association (PRLA) at its annual Conference and Awards Gala which took place at the Omni Bedford Springs October 23-25, 2023. The designation is part of the Spirit of Hospitality Awards. Each year, PRLA honors individuals and businesses statewide from the hospitality and tourism industry for their dedication, service, community involvement, and successes. The Pocono Raceway event recognized for the award was the NASCAR Cup Race Weekend which took place on July 22 & 23, 2023. Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race was a sellout and the largest crowd in Long Pond, PA since 2010. Saturday’s race, the “Explore the Pocono Mountains 225” sponsored by the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau, drew huge crowds as well for an allnew fan experience with a new Victory Lane, paddock and more. “This award is an important acknowledgement of our avid fans and the relentless effort our team at Pocono Raceway puts in every day. Executing a premier national-level event each year also takes the support of a remarkable cohort of local, regional, and state-wide partners and advocates,’ said Ben May, President of Pocono Raceway. “For generations, our fans and industry partners have looked forward to their annual visit to the Pocono Mountains, and value the hospitality that welcomes them. Pocono Raceway’s name may be on the award, but we share the honor with every small business, bartender, front-line worker, and community partner that rolls out the welcome mat with us.” Pocono Raceway contributes See NASCAR, page 26

An independent East Stroudsburg University (ESU) study conducted in 2014 valued the impact at $257.5 million annually or in 2022 dollars the equivalent of $308.5 million. One NASCAR Cup Series race is estimated to infuse local economies with $75 - $100 million yearly. Pocono Raceway attracts fans from all 67 counties in Pennsylvania, 50 states and nearly 20 countries - motorsports is a true tourism driver - vastly different than Major League sports in PA, including the NFL, NBA, MLB & NHL teams which tend to draw more
localized audiences. 60% of Pocono Raceway attendees are from out-of-state bringing in new dollars to Pennsylvania. This is true economic development in its purest sense. NASCAR returns to the Tricky Triangle July 12-14, 2024 with the Craftsman Truck Series race, NASCAR Xfinity Series race and the NASCAR Cup Series race. Tickets are now available to purchase for the 2024 NASCAR Race Weekend. Kids 12 and under are free. Pocono Mountains visitor information is available online at PoconoMountains.com or by phone at (570) 421-5791. Follow @PoconoTVNetwork on X to stay current with up-to-date information. Established in 1934, the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau is a private, non-profit membership organization. Lake Harmony Rescue Squad Report The Lake Harmony Rescue Squad’s ’23-’24 fundraising campaign letters should have reached your mailboxes. While last year the LHRS received good support, this year, we need to step up a bit because the LHRS is buying another 4-wheel drive ambulance, same specs as the 1760. The new unit should arrive later in 2024 if all goes well with the order and customizing. So by late 2024, the Lake Harmony Rescue Squad will have the most modern fleet in the area. If you wish to donate to the new campaign, and towards the new ambulance, please send a check to: LAKE HARMONY RESCUE SQUAD AND AMBULANCE CORPS, INC. P.O. Box 564, Lake Harmony, PA 18624,
or go on to lakeharmonyambulance.com to make a payment with a credit card. Consider buying a LHRS hat, shirt, or sweatshirt for a holiday gift.
Monthly Report: The LHRS put over 2,000 miles on their odometers in October. Crews were over 30 times in Lake Harmony, three times into White Haven, once into Monroe County, and once into Penn Forest. Units also went out on over a dozen fire alarm calls. The LHRS is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Aaron Rodgers’ replacement struggles as other new and replacement QBs excel by Leslie Monteiro Once again, quarterback Zack Wilson did nothing on Sunday night for the Jets, and the team suffered a disheartening 16-12 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium. Wilson did not throw a touchdown for the fourth time in five games, and has been in charge of 36 drives since the Jets last got into the end zone. Even when NYJ took the lead 9-6 in the third quarter, I never had confidence that the Jets would hold on and win. In a self-fulfilling prophecy, Raiders quarterback Aidan O’Connell threw a seven-yard touchdown to Michael Mayer, giving the Raiders a 16-9 lead early in the fourth quarter. Then, on the first possession in the fourth quarter, Wilson gained a couple of first downs with passes to Breece Hall and Garrett Wilson. But the drive stalled, and the Jets settled for another field goal from Greg Zuerlein, who scored all 12 of the Jets’ points with four field goals. His final FG made the score 16-12 with 12 minutes left. There was still time for the Jets to win. The team received a momentum-shifting gift when
Ashtyn Davis recovered a fumble. Wilson then engineered four first downs that got the Jets into the Red Zone, but then he threw a driveending interception on 2nd-and-8 at the Raiders’ 20-yard line. The INT was the ballgame for all intents and purposes, even though the Jets got another shot because of NYJ’s stout defense. But a Hail Mary pass with five seconds left fell incomplete, and Las Vegas held on to win 16-12. The way this game turned out is a microcosm of Zach Wilson’s career--good enough to get his team field goals but not good enough to throw touchdown passes. I know that Wilson was never intended to be the starter, and he only got the nod after Aaron Rodgers went down with an injury in Game 1. Still, the reality is that Wilson has not been able to respond because he is not a good NFL quarterback. Perhaps more bothering to me is observing what other teams are doing to respond to quarterback needs. In Houston, rookie C.J. Stroud led his team to victory at Cincinnati. The win upped the team’s record to 5-4; unbelievably, the Texans might make the NFL See QUARTERBACKS, page 43

On the Road Working here in the Lake Harmony area, I enjoy the benefits of the easy highway connections to Philadelphia, New York City, Harrisburg and beyond. I can get to Penn Medical in Philly in two hours if traffic permits. A trip for a newspapers meeting in Harrisburg this month took under two hours, door to door after rush hour ended there. The only overnight was in Harrisburg, and our host kindly reserved a dog-friendly room for us. Ruth attended the meeting, and I did some sales work and writing in the hotel room as the dogs lounged. A day trip this month was a ride to Easton to attend the Lafayette Leopards vs Fordham Rams division 1AA football game. Handicapped parking was close by. It was a short walk to the seats, and we settled in for some fun. The home team won, which was what mattered. Lafayette won the Patriot League outright with a win at Lehigh the next Saturday. This means they will be going off to the Division IAA playoffs, facing Delaware on November 25. The winner of that game advances to go to Montana on December 2 to play Big Sky Conference champion Montana.
by Seth Isenberg
The stadium is in a pretty hollow just behind some of the main campus buildings. The home fans face west, and there was a cold breeze. The mostly older fans, including ourselves, were all bundled up — hats, hoodies… After the game, we went to the Allentown
Farmer’s Market and then Wegman’s to do some shopping. We enjoyed a fresh and hot seafood soup at a Market stand, to warm us up. As Thanksgiving approaches, I am looking at a drive to family gatherings in Annapolis, and Ellicott City. To Annapolis, the trip maps at 3 hours
and a half, if traffic cooperates around the Baltimore Beltway and the weather is good on Thanksgiving Day. The second trip is on a Saturday, and maps in just under three hours thanks to the easy drive on Interstates 80 and 81 to Interstate 83 — and beyond.

5 reasons to work and learn from the Poconos by Emily Whalen of the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau
Give your productivity and creativity a jumpstart with a change of scenery! Whether you’re working remotely or studying remotely, a working vacation in the Poconos is the perfect way to combine work and play. Conveniently located within a few hours’ drive of major Northeastern US cities like New York and Philadelphia, the Pocono Mountains is ideal for getting that breath of fresh air you need. Why work or study from home when you could work or study from a lakeside cottage or a balcony with a mountain view? Grab lunch or a coffee break in a charming small town cafe instead of in the break room or cafeteria. Enjoy a mini escape without using up vacation days, plus take advantage of great midweek savings. During a Poconos working vacation, everyone can accomplish their tasks for the day and unplug when finished to spend quality time with each other in a refreshing environment. From the phone line to the zipline, Poconos resorts offer the best of both worlds when it comes to workcations and schoolcations. Take
advantage of high speed wireless Internet and broadband to connect with your team or classroom, then be minutes away from great attractions when it’s time to clock out. Keep reading to find five reasons why you should start planning your working vacation in the Poconos now!
1) Find a Healthy Work-Life Balance A working vacation can be a great opportunity to reset and develop a better work-life balance. Plan a work schedule with room for focus time, and let your coworkers know when you’ll be available. When classes or the workday end, put that phone away and get out to explore the area! Take a tour or see a show. There are tons of engaging activities and things to do in the Poconos during your evenings off.
2) Take Advantage of Quiet, Private Spaces During a working vacation, it’s important to have a quiet and secluded space where you can feel comfortable both while you work and while you relax. Pocono accommodations offer many different inviting room types and suites, plus the Wi-Fi you need to accomplish your remote tasks. You’ll find internet access at See POCONOS, page 35

Deer season — one way or another by Alex Zidock The general, state-wide deer season opens on Saturday, November 25. Hunter or not, if you are going to kill a deer in our Pocono woods, it’s going to be in November or early December. National insurance statistics say if you are going to hit a deer with your car anywhere in “deer country,” your chances are best during November. That period spills into early December in Pennsylvania, and it all has to do with the ‘rut.’ The rut is when a male (buck) deer’s interest in mating with a female (doe) peaks. And the wild buck’s instinct is to chase and capture doe and mate. Everything else doesn’t matter, including being cautious when crossing roads. In 2022 in Pennsylvania there were 5,848 deer-related traffic incidents according to PennDOT. Of those, 1,260 resulted in injuries and 9 people died. Here’s what you need to know: Slow down when driving in the deer woods. If you see one deer crossing the road, there are likely more to follow. In many areas, the deer populations have increased, particularly in areas where hunting is prohibited, as is the case in many community developments. Whitetail deer are most active at dusk and dawn when headlights are least effective, and when most people are heading to and from work. Hunters are in the woods now, moving around and forcing deer to move as well. Slow down! Did I say that before?
Hunting Seasons The General whitetail deer hunting season opens on Saturday, November 25, one-half hour before sunrise. The only day hunters can hunt on Sunday during the deer season is November 26. The regular firearms deer season ends on December 9. Hunters are allowed only one antlered deer during the license year. They may, however, take as many antlerless deer as they have special antlerless tags. In Wildlife Management Unit 3-D, which encompasses most of the Pocono Area, the antlerless season has been extended until Saturday, December 2. Also, the state has extended bear hunting in certain WMUs. A hunter with a valid bear license
can take a bear from November 25 through December 2, including on Sunday, November 26, in WMU’s 3A, 3B, 3C, 3D, 4C, and 5A. Either way, if you are driving over the next several weeks or hunting, remember your best time to encounter a whitetail deer, buck, or doe is in November or early December. Please drive and/or hunt carefully.

3) Get Inspired by Scenic Beauty The pristine beauty of Mother Nature is an excellent antidote for work or school stress, and looking up from a meeting or class to find a beautiful view right out the window is a great way to take a quick break and clear your mind. The best part is that when it’s time to close your laptop, you can head right out into the gorgeous landscape! Plan a hike to see the two tallest waterfalls in Pennsylvania, get out on the ski slopes or book a ski or snowboard lesson in the winter, follow our winding rivers during a kayaking trip in the summer, or make a new four-legged friend during a horseback ride through peaceful fields and forests. In the Pocono Mountains, there are so many ways to enjoy outdoor adventure all year round!

playoffs. Josh Dobbs has been a revelation in Minneapolis after replacing the injured Kirk Cousins. His team also won on Sunday (over the Saints), and Dobbs has produced five touchdowns without throwing an interception. In Chicago, Tyson Bagent has given the Bears a much-needed lift. Last Monday, the previously moribund Bears beat the Panthers, upping their record to 2-2 under Bagent while 1-5 previously. Who would have imagined that from somebody who played at D-2 Shepherd University, never Get your yard ready for Summer
having played a down in major college football? While those three are working wonders, Wilson has all but destroyed the Jets’ chances of making the playoffs. Worse yet, as long as he keeps playing, the Jets don’t have much chance of winning, including in Sunday’s game vs. the Bills in Buffalo (opening line, +6.5). So, let’s see what Trevor Siemian or Tim Boyle can do. They can’t be worse. If change doesn’t come quickly, Wilson may ruin more than his chances at continuing in the NFL. Jets’ head coach Robert Saleh’s job and GM Joe Douglas’s will be in jeopardy, too. Those are good reasons, among many, why Wilson should never play again for the Jets. _____________ A long-time commentator on NY metro area sports, Leslie Montiero has written for a number of sports blogs over the years, including with The Sports Column.
