President/CEO’s Message In 1953 our Credit Union was chartered as the Capital District Telephone Employees Federal Credit Union. We accepted 43 deposits totaling $6,901. As amazing as it seems, we are celebrating our 60th anniversary in 2013 with more than 93,000 members and more than $1 billion in assets. Our Annual Meeting in March will kick off a whole host of promotions that shine a light on our humble beginnings, impressive history and bright future. A big piece of that bright future is our plan to build a new headquarters and Main Branch on Winners Circle, less than a mile from our Computer Drive East location. This much-needed expansion will be smart and sustainable and will provide for the needs of our membership. As CAP COM begins this exciting new chapter and looks back over six decades, we are very proud of our unwavering commitment 60 YEARS OF to great member service. You can see our continued devotion on Page 8, where Member Service Associate and 2012 Top Service award winner Brendan McCoy tells us: “From teller transactions to loans, I enjoy helping members. I take pride making a difference for members.” Throughout our 60th year, you’ll see that we aren’t just a different kind of Credit Union, we’re a Credit Union that makes a difference.

Strategies for tax-efficient investing Investment earnings can be reduced by 40 percent or more by federal income and capital gains taxes, the alternative minimum tax, and any state and local taxes. Adding to the challenge is the uncertain economic impact of the fiscal cliff – a bundle of federal government tax increases and spending cuts that may take effect in 2013. The fact is: Reducing your tax liability is more important than ever and CAP COM Financial Services has some strategies that can help.1 Invest in tax-deferred and tax-free accounts such as company-sponsored retirement savings accounts, including traditional 401(k) and 403(b) plans and traditional individual retirement accounts (IRAs). Contributions to IRAs may be tax deductible, depending on your income or access to an employer-sponsored retirement plan. Earnings are tax-deferred until withdrawal, when you may be retired and in a lower tax bracket. Contributions to Roth IRAs and Roth-style employersponsored savings plans are not tax deductible. Although, earnings that accumulate in Roth accounts can be withdrawn tax free if you have held the account for at least five years and meet certain requirements.2 Withdrawals prior to age 59½ from a qualified retirement plan, traditional IRA or Roth IRA may be subject to income tax and an additional 10 percent federal tax. There are real advantages to delaying withdrawals until retirement.

Maximize your losses by measuring them against capital gains. “Leftover losses” can offset up to $3,000 against ordinary income. And, you could carry remaining losses forward to offset gains or income in future years.3 CAP COM Financial Services can help uncover smart tax-planning strategies tailored to your needs. Call us at (518) 782-0209 to set up an appointment today.

Deliv er famil ing meals ies in need to .

The generosity of CAP COM members, employees and our business partners shined brightly this holiday season. We handed out hundreds of new winter coats and Thanksgiving meals. We surprised children at local family shelters with a visit from Santa and gifts, while providing parents with groceries and holiday decorations. We helped collect thousands of new toys for underprivileged children. Thank you for supporting fundraising initiatives such as our Calendar of Dreams, BIG Benefit Raffle and Golf Tournament. That support allowed us to assist more families this year than ever before.
