CAP COM is growing. You see that in our ever-expanding products and services. And, we see it in increased in-branch and online activity. We welcome this growth while recognizing that continued progress requires planning for projects such as a new headquarters facility. We moved to our Main Office on Computer Drive East in 1988. At that time, we had $110 million in assets and 25,000 members. Today, we have assets totaling over $900 million and more than 80,000 members. That means our Main Office is nearly bursting at the seams, as recent news stories have reported. I’d like to assure our CAP COM has membership that any expansion will be smart sustainable. And, it will be made with the even more for and needs of our membership in mind. your future. As CAP COM puts a spotlight on its future, we invite you to do the same. CAP COM Financial Services is a good place start. Get unbiased advice for retirement, investing and insurance. (See Page 8.) And CAP COM has even more for your future. We have Home Loans to meet every need from Mortgages to Home Equities. In this issue, you’ll hear from two member families who rave about our Home Loans. Finally, don’t let the joy of the season pass you by. Join us at our branches on Wednesday, Nov. 23 for a complimentary Thanksgiving pumpkin bread and join us in December to meet Santa Claus. Take the basics of budgeting to college Many families prepare children to succeed academically at college while underestimating the importance of day-to-day financial skills. That’s where CAP COM’s College Bound Program can help. We help families with everything from choosing the right college to finishing FAFSA financial aid forms to building a smart financial plan. A smart financial plan includes big-picture choices about loans and financial aid as well as basic budgeting skills – a talent many teens lack. Learning to budget begins with learning to save and knowing the difference between wants and needs. During a child’s teen years, parents and teachers should stress smart spending habits. Then, when college arrives, teens will be armed with useful skills.
But, it’s also wise for parents to set up a joint checking account to monitor first-year spending. And, teens should be educated on the pitfalls of credit card debt. Discover more on Tuesday, Jan. 10 at our special workshops for students and parents. See details at right.

Use your assets to purchase a Single Payment Life Insurance Policy with a guaranteed death benefit that exceeds or equals your intended legacy. If you are age 55 or older, talk with us today about a policy. There may be tax implications as a result of selling assets within an investment portfolio. If contemplating this strategy, it is important to understand that life insurance is a long-term strategy to meet particular needs and liquidity may be affected. You should consult with us about the tax and legal implications of your situation. Life insurance policies contain fees and expenses, including cost of insurance, administrative fees, premium loads, surrender charges and other charges or fees that will impact policy values. All guarantees within the policy are based on the claims-paying ability of the issuing company. This strategy is not intended for variable universal life. The death benefit protection offered by a life insurance policy can be a key component of a sound financial plan.

Preparing for long-term care CAP COM Financial can help build a long-term care insurance plan to protect you and your family. Long-term care insurance helps protect your assets if you need extended care. It also allows you to choose the facility that you may enter and the level of care you will receive. Begin considering this insurance when you turn 40. The earlier you purchase long-term care insurance, the less you’ll pay for it. In some cases, premiums are tax deductible, though we advise that you consult a tax advisor.

Paula presents “Finian.”
Making Strides! The CAP COM Team in Albany’s Washington Park.
CAP COM raises more than $30,000 to help fight breast cancer at Strides Walk A team of 425 CAP COM members, staff and volunteers joined with over 15,000 walkers in Albany during the 16th Annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk on Sunday, Oct. 16.
Walk with us! CAP COM was again a proud flagship sponsor of the walk, which aims to boost awareness, education and fundraising for breast cancer research. Our team raised more than $30,000 this year, adding to the nearly $800,000 raised during the Credit Union’s 16-year partnership with Strides.
“The Strides Walk is a big piece of The CAP COM Cares Foundation’s volunteer work. We are committed to supporting the families who face breast cancer,” said President/CEO Paula A. Stopera. As in previous years, CAP COM debuted a keepsake stuffed animal to inspire survivors. “Finian the Fox” was fitted with a small CAP COM shirt. The name has Irish origins and symbolizes the warrior spirit. “Finian the Fox” also celebrated long-time CAP COM staff member Angie Fox, who lost her battle with cancer in May 2011.
Staff with a survivor.
Strides Stars!
Strides Star Katie Fox. CAP COM Member Katie Fox and employee Noreen Connor were named CAP COM Strides Stars after raising the most money for the American Cancer Society. Katie raised $430 and Noreen raised $1,060. Great job! Katie is the daughter of Angie Fox and proudly shows the honorary “Finian the Fox” in the above photo.
