President/CEO’s Message Trust is at the heart of our relationship with you and every CAP COM member. You trust us to provide award-winning customer service, great products, unique programs and leading-edge Web and Mobile Banking tools. As you’ll read in this issue, we are meeting − and often exceeding − your expectations. Just ask Kathy Saso, of Delmar. Kathy’s kids joined our School Banking Program and soon made the wise choice to switch all their finances to CAP COM. She tells us on Page 8: “This is the first time in many years we have a financial partner we can trust.” You’ll find our School Banking Program in more than 70 Capital Region elementary schools. We are teaching kids the value of saving by helping them make deposits in the classroom. As you’ll read on Page 2, lessons in saving are an important and too often overlooked part of childhood education. CAP COM is a trusted family and community partner in towns and FINANCIAL PARTNER cities across the Capital Region. Our work goes well beyond the walls of our branches. The CAP COM Cares Foundation and our dedicated volunteers continually raise the bar, as demonstrated at Albany’s Strides event in October. As part of our 17th year of sponsoring and supporting Strides, we rallied 550 Strides team members and raised nearly $30,000 to support breast cancer research. Read more and see photos on Page 14. We are a financial partner you can trust, a community partner who truly cares, and a Credit Union that makes a difference.

Tips for teaching kids to save Accountants are known for giving good advice. That holds true in a recent survey commissioned by the American Institute of CPAs. The survey showed that although 81 percent of parents talk with children about managing money wisely, the topic ranked below several other lessons like good manners. The survey indicated that the first conversation about money occurs, on average, at age 10. That is too late, said Ernie Almonte, vice chair of the American Institute of CPAs National Financial Literacy Commission. “Dollars and cents should get the same attention as please and thank you at home. Financial education builds critical skills that help put life goals within reach, ” Almonte said.
Here are The National Financial Literacy Commission’s tips for parents: Start early: Require children to save birthday cash or money from afterschool jobs. Use allowance to pay for items such as toys. Speak in their terms. A child will likely want money to buy a game or a bike or to have money for a night out with friends. Create teachable moments to show them how a savings account with compounding interest can pay off for long-term goals like college. Have conversations: During dinner, talk about where the family might cut back to save for a big purchase such as a vacation. Show them your pay stub and talk about taxes and saving for retirement.

Q&A
with The College Advisor of New York Dr. Dean Skarlis is President and founder of The College Advisor of New York. CAP COM has partnered with The College Advisor to offer members reduced rates for in-depth college counseling services such as one-on-one essay coaching, college selection and interview preparation. Q: Dr. Skarlis, what should high school juniors and seniors do during the late fall and early winter to prepare for college?
Dr. Dean Skarlis www.collegeadvisorny.com
A: High school juniors usually take the PSAT in October. After that, students should take the most challenging courses they can and work hard to succeed.
Families should also begin to research colleges and look into financial resources. Parents should assess affordability and talk to their kids about what they can realistically afford. By January, students should prepare for the SAT or ACT. High school seniors seeking early admission will submit applications in November. Others should be preparing applications for regular deadlines that range from Jan. 1 to about Feb. 15. Be sure to have transcripts sent from your high school to colleges and visit colleges that have sent enrollment invitations. Don’t forget: File FAFSA forms by Feb.1.

Falcon Fraud Protection CAP COM and Falcon Fraud Protection work together to help keep your CAP COM VISA® Debit and Credit Cards safe. Falcon is a premier fraud protection service that monitors card activity. If Falcon detects suspicious purchases, an analyst may call to verify activity. The Falcon analyst will verify your identity but will never ask for a full Social Security Number, Account Number, or three-digit code on the back of the card. If Falcon is unable to verify suspicious purchases with you, new card purchases may be temporarily blocked. “Card fraud is an ever-present threat. We strive to assure members are protected,” said Julie Hughes, Director of Risk Management. Falcon analysts will never contact you via e-mail or text message. Before responding, you can ask to verify the Falcon request with CAP COM. Call (518) 458-2195 and ask for a Risk Management Representative.

A new, often much younger “best friend,” who becomes overly involved in the elder’s life. • Abrupt financial or estate planning changes with no clear reason. Contact our Risk Management Team at (518) 458-2195 ext. 2200 if you see financial signs of elder abuse. Or, call the New York State Department of Social Services and Adult Protective Services at 1-800-342-3009 and choose option 6.

Investing in a low rate environment In 1789 Benjamin Franklin famously wrote: “In this world, nothing is certain except death and taxes.” That saying still rings true today. Yet, by formulating a tax-efficient investment and distribution strategy that includes tax-free bonds, life insurance and fixed annuities, retirees can keep or pass on more of their hard-earned assets. That strategy may be best suited for times like now when investments can have low rates of return.
“Our Financial Advisors will review your investments and build a strategy for a low-rate environment that includes smart choices for tax-deferred accounts.” - Steve Massey Director of Advisory Services
Tax-free bonds Municipal bonds have long been valued by retirees seeking a haven from taxes and stock market volatility. Generally, the interest paid on municipal bonds is exempt from federal taxes and sometimes state and local taxes.1 The higher your tax bracket, the more you may benefit from investing in these bonds. Be sure to review which types of securities are held in taxable versus tax-deferred accounts. Through at least the end of 2012, the maximum federal tax rate on some dividend-producing investments and longterm capital gains will be 15%. Life Insurance Life insurance is payable upon death and can provide a surviving spouse, children and other dependents with the funds necessary to maintain their standard of living. Life insurance can also help repay debt and fund education costs. The amount of coverage you need depends on your situation. If you make $100,000 a year, have a sizable mortgage and two kids headed to an expensive college, you may need $1 million in coverage. Talk with our insurance experts about policies from companies whose financial strength is ranked high by rating agencies. And remember that you can always shop around. Fixed Annuities Fixed Annuities2 can deliver a lifetime of protection in minutes. Fixed annuities offer tax-deferred earning power at competitive rates, a guaranteed source of lifetime income, and protection from market downturns.
Capital gains from municipal bonds are taxable and may be subject to the alternative minimum tax. 2 Fixed annuities are long-term investment vehicles designed for retirement purposes. Gains from tax-deferred investments are taxable as ordinary income upon withdrawal. Guarantees are based on the claims paying ability of the issuing company. Withdrawals made prior to 59 ½ are subject to 10% IRS penalty tax and surrender charges may apply. 1

CAP COM’s Insurance Representatives are your first stop for life insurance and fixed annuities.* Get a lifetime of protection in minutes. Life Insurance can protect your loved ones after you’re gone and Fixed Annuities* offer tax-deferred earning power.
• Counter losses you may have already experienced. • Avoid future losses from market volatility. • Potentially increase the value of your legacy. • Deliver a strategy1 for a secure future. Use your assets to purchase a Single Payment Life Insurance Policy with a guaranteed death benefit that exceeds or equals your intended legacy. If you are age 55 or older, talk with us today about a policy. There may be tax implications as a result of selling assets within an investment portfolio. If contemplating this strategy, it is important to understand that life insurance is a long-term strategy to meet particular needs and liquidity may be affected. You should consult with us about the tax and legal implications of your situation. Life insurance policies contain fees and expenses, including cost of insurance, administrative fees, premium loads, surrender charges and other charges or fees that will impact policy values. All guarantees within the policy are based on the claims-paying ability of the issuing company. This strategy is not intended for variable universal life. The death benefit protection offered by a life insurance policy can be a key component of a sound financial plan.

Preparing for long-term care CAP COM Financial can help build a long-term care insurance plan to protect you and your family. Long-term care insurance helps protect your assets if you need extended care at home or in a facility. You can choose the facility that you may enter and the level of care you will receive. Begin considering this insurance when you turn 40. The earlier you purchase long-term care insurance, the less you’ll pay for it. In some cases, premiums are tax deductible, though we advise that you consult a tax advisor.

Volunteering for the holidays The Foundation is preparing for another season of giving to brighten the holidays for those in need. Each year we hand out hundreds of new winter coats to disadvantaged children and deliver meals to struggling families for the Thanksgiving holiday. In December, we surprise children residing at local family shelters with a visit from Santa Claus and gifts of toys and books while providing their parents with groceries and decorations to brighten their temporary homes. Thanks to your support of the Foundation, we will be able to bring alive the magic of the holidays for those who need it most.

Web Banking enhancements will include: • Improved security and navigation. • Permanent passwords plus your choice of user names, instead of member numbers or Social Security numbers. • Log in using computers not recognized by Connect-24 by using text message authentication codes. Enroll up to two phone numbers for authentication.
