Big Benefit

Raffle

Our Foundation raised $55,000 to help bolster its commitment to Capital Region organizations and charities with its BIG Benefit Raffle. The Foundation sold 3,000 tickets for one $10,000 grand prize, one $5,000 prize and five $1,000 prizes. The winners were announced during a drawing on Thursday, May 13 at our Main Office. The 2010 winner of the $10,000 grand prize was Julie Cooper, of Schenectady. Tom and Barb Owen, of Waterford, were the winners of the $5,000 prize. There were five $1,000 winners from municipalities stretching from Schenectady to Troy. The money raised supports scholarships and regional charitable groups including the Seton Health Foundation and the Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County.

Support our

Soldiers In early April, a group of Credit Union kids joined together to create care packages for soldiers serving overseas. Children of CAP COM employees joined their parents to assemble packages as part of the Foundation’s biannual SOS (Support Our Soldiers) Program. In mid-June, U.S. Army Capt. John R. Davis sent a thank you message to CAP COM after his company received a care package in Afghanistan. Capt. Davis wrote: “The snacks, coffee, and candy were much appreciated by the soldiers and it all came at a great time. We are in the final month of deployment and most of the mail has stopped, so it was good for the Soldiers to restock on some things for one last time.”

Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County

Run/Walk CAP COM Cares Foundation volunteers, runners and walkers helped raise money for the Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County at the 2010 Literacy Run/Walk. The 11th annual race was held at the Rensselaer Technological Park in Troy. The Foundation has been the Patron Sponsor of the run for the past six years and partners with Literacy Volunteers on fundraising events throughout the year. The Foundation is committed to ďŹ nancial literacy and education initiatives.

CAP COM Foundation Annual

Golf Tournament

FOX23 Sports Anchor Rich Becker helped the Foundation kick off another great charitable golf tournament at Wolferts Roost Country Club in Albany on Monday, June 14. The CAP COM Cares Foundation 15th Annual Charity Golf Tournament featured 120 players from the Credit Union and local businesses. “Events like our golf tournament allow us to make a difference in our community through the work of our Foundation,” said Paula Stopera, Credit Union President/CEO and Chairperson of the Foundation Board. “We are so grateful for the generous support of area businesses, community partners, volunteers and staff for helping us raise thousands of dollars for Capital Region families in need,” Stopera said. The golf event featured many local sponsors; Jaeger & Flynn Associates, Inc. and Computer Professionals International (CPI) to name a few. Hosted by CAP COM Financial Services, LLC., the tournament raised $25,000 for our Foundation. Money raised by the golf tournament, one of the Foundation’s three annual fundraisers, will be used to help Capital Region families and organizations in need.

Back to school with new

Backpacks

In July a group of CAP COM teen volunteers gathered at the Main OfďŹ ce and packed more than 250 new backpacks with school supplies for local children in need. Our annual Back to School Backpack Program provides backpacks with all the essentials to community organizations. After the backpacks were prepared, the CAP COM volunteers delivered some the backpacks to children at local family-support organizations. Making memories and helping young students get a strong start to their school year is an important piece of our Foundation’s community impact

Horseback

Riding

Foundation volunteers recently helped children at Albany’s Marillac Family Shelter enjoy their first horseback ride, a petting zoo and ice cream treats. Credit Union staff volunteered their personal time so that as many as 30 children, and some of their parents, could enjoy a horse ride and ice cream treats. The annual event brings community partners together and creates fun and laughter for families living at the shelter. The children and volunteers played sports and made new friends. “A critical piece of the Foundation’s mission is to make a difference in the lives of children and underprivileged families. Sometimes, that means more than making a monetary donation; it means giving the children a lifelong memory and a glimmer of hope for better times ahead,” said Paula A. Stopera, Capital Communications Federal Credit Union President/CEO and Chairperson of the Foundation Board.
