Stay one step ahead of scams

What need to

know Ten tips to stay safe at the ATM 1. Pay close attention to ATM surroundings. 2. Be wary of people offering to help you with your ATM transaction. 3. Do not use an ATM that looks unusual or has unfamiliar options. 4. Do not allow people to watch you enter your pin code. 5. Do not re-enter your pin if the ATM “eats” your card. Contact a Credit Union official immediately. 6. Never write your pin on the back of your card. 7. Do your automated banking in a public, well-lit location.

8. Never count cash at the ATM. Wait until you are in a secure place. 9. When using a drive-up ATM, keep your engine running, your doors and windows locked, and leave enough room between your car and others in the ATM drive-up line. 10.Closely monitor your account statements and balance. Immediately report any problems to CAP COM.

Cyber criminals never stop inventing. There is always a new scam on the horizon and CAP COM’s Risk Management Department stays informed to ensure that your account is safe. But, you can always do more, according to Risk Manager Julie Hughes. “We work on the front of lines of cyber crime and we see every day how smart consumers can avoid headaches,” Julie said. Cyber criminals use e-mail messages, text messages and fake webpages to gather information or install malicious software. That software can steal personal data from your computer, smartphone or tablet. Nearly all of these scams use what experts call “social engineering tactics” aimed at tricking people into providing personal information or downloading software. A good rule of thumb to stay safe: Never provide your personal account information unless you are certain that the recipient is reputable. Don’t get hooked by ‘phishing’ e-mails • Beware of links: Don’t click on links in a suspicious message. • Ignore threats: Delete messages threatening that your e-mail account will be closed without immediate action. • Bad grammar: If you spot bad grammar and misspelled words, delete the message. Common ‘smishing’ text message scams • Urgent texts from financial institutions: Ignore text messages that appear to be from a financial institution and say something like: “Act now or your account will be suspended.” • Call to action: Messages that call for immediate action often lead to a fake webpage where you’ll be invited to enter personal data. Here is one example: “You’ve signed up for our dating service. You will be charged $2 per day unless you cancel this order now.”

Nancy Lasky needed a car for college. Her daughter Lauren was set to start classes at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts and son Drew was preparing for a second year at SUNY Oneonta. “After more than 30 years of being a member, I happened to notice CAP COM’s Car Buying Service,” Nancy said. Nancy called the Car Buying Experts for advice and decided that she needed an SUV for moving in and out of college dorms. She settled on a 2009 Toyota® Rav4 and CAP COM took it from there. “The Experts negotiated the deal, handled the trade-in and finalized my loan,” Nancy said. “They handled everything from A to Z. CAP COM made car buying effortless.” CAP COM’s Car Buying Experts help people like Nancy find the best car, SUV, minivan or truck. They also get the best price and trade-in value. In fact, the Car Buying Experts handle about 600 vehicle purchases each year and work with dealers around the greater Capital Region. Taking advantage of the Car Buying Service was the latest chapter in Nancy’s 30 years with CAP COM. As her son began a college search in 2010, Nancy attended a College Bound® Workshop and met with Certified College Planning Specialist Kim Donah. “For me, it all comes down to trust. And I trust CAP COM with everything,” Nancy said.

Brightening life at Vanderheyden Hall.

A volunteer lays out new bedding at Vanderheyden Hall.

Family Funday at Marillac Family Shelter.

Brightening lives The Foundation contributed $20,000 and hundreds of volunteer hours this summer to make improvements at Vanderheyden Hall, home to nearly 50 adolescents who have been abused, neglected or abandoned and face emotional challenges and developmental disabilities. Upgrades included new paint, furniture, electronics and window treatments in the residence facilities, as well as recreational and safety equipment to encourage physical activity. Improvements were made with help from Sherwin-Williams Paints and Taft Furniture. In August, families residing at St. Catherine’s Marillac Family Shelter were treated to a fun filled day complete with a petting zoo, pony rides and cowboy hats for the children, keepsake photos for the parents, and ice cream. Our Back to School Backpack Program provided backpacks filled with school supplies to more than 380 children of struggling families so that they may begin the new school year prepared and with pride.
