This season finds us closing another chapter in the history of our Credit Union as we move into our new Financial Center, a much larger, state-of-the-art building at 4 Winners Circle in Albany. While the new building is not far from the 18 Computer Drive East location that has been our home since 1989, it is a monument to the change CAP COM has seen since its inception more than 60 years ago. You will certainly notice a new look when you visit us, but you’ll recognize familiar faces and the personalized service that you are used to getting at CAP COM. Our Credit Union is strong and continues to grow – and we can’t wait to show you our new home! Watch for more information about an Open House we have planned for members on September 21st. We look forward to welcoming you into our custom-designed meeting spaces as we revamp some of our fall member events. You will certainly notice a new look when you visit us, but you’ll recognize familiar faces and the personalized service that you are used to getting at CAP COM. It’s the kind of service that was honored again this year by Capital Region Living Magazine readers who voted us “Best Customer Service” and “Best Credit Union.” We continue to strive toward making banking easier for you – no matter where life takes you. Ask Angeline, on Page 3, how easy we made it for her to buy a car at our Spring Car Sale without the hassle. If a new car is on your list this summer, make sure you talk with our car buying experts. They can help you with the details of buying a car, so you can focus on other things while the weather is nice. Already this year, we’ve helped

We’re proud to be your local partner when it is time to buy a home and our mortgage experts will be with you every step of the way. You won’t have to look far in this newsletter to find out that you’ll be automatically entered to win a weekend getaway for up to four people if you apply for a Home Equity, Auto Loan or Mortgage, or if you open a new Checking Account at CAP COM. Details about our Live Life Your Way Sweepstakes are on Page 3. We’re having a lot of fun in our branches and on social media finding out what you like about #citylife or #countrylife. Don’t forget to cast your vote! Lastly, please help me congratulate three outstanding teens who were recognized earlier this year with the Making A Difference Award. These young members, featured on Page 8, are true leaders for the next generation and we applaud them for the work they are doing to help others. I hope your summer is full of adventure and lasting memories. If there is anything we can do to help, please let us know! Paula A. Stopera President/CEO

One last lesson
before college Watch for information about our College Admissions Workshop this October. Lack of budgeting and misuse of credit and debit cards are two of the biggest mistakes college students make when they first venture out on their own. Have your child open a Young Adult Checking Account now. They’ll have the summer to learn how to use it while you are right there to guide them. A Young Adult Checking Account comes with free ATM access* anywhere in the world. Connect-24 online banking and our mobile apps allow young adults to manage their money wherever they go. Free products like Direct Deposit, Remote Deposit and Bill Pay make it easier to move money in and out of their Checking Account. With a new Connect-24 option, your child can give you access to their account if you don’t already have it. Keep an eye on the balance and transfer money from your account if you think it is needed. There will be enough for your child to learn once college begins this fall. Financial savvy is one last gift you can give them before they go. Let us know how we can help! Sanje Harris-Richardson first joined CAP COM so she could start building credit and saving for a car. “It felt like home. I liked the vibe,” she said. “I thought: I really want to be part of this.” One of last year’s Weidner “Ed” Davis Scholarship winners, Sanje has been accepted at the University of Buffalo – School of Nursing, where she will enter her junior year this fall. She relies on mobile banking and direct deposit while she is in school and she said that budgeting and planning know-how will help keep her
from accumulating too much debt after college. In the upcoming year, Sanje will act as a Residential Advisor for incoming freshman. Here are her top tips for students who are college-bound: • Find the Financial Aid Office first. Make sure you have your aid in order before you even unpack. • Surround yourself with people who will push you to do better. • Learn how to manage and prioritize your time. • Don’t wait until the last minute to do your laundry.

Saving for something? New 9-, 23-month Certificates
Honoring the officers who serve and protect More than 200 students submitted posters in a contest sponsored by CAP COM that answered the question: How do police officers help people? The outstanding submissions of nine area children were chosen to receive $50 each at a special Police Week Ceremony in May. CAP COM also gave a total of $2,000 to eight local police departments to thank them for their service. Congratulations to our poster contest winners! Ryan Appleton, Saddlewood Elementary School; Gabriella Romeo-Artis, New Scotland Elementary School; Mya Bloodgood, Bell Top School; Tyler Quinn, Gardner Dickinson School; Sydney Carey Hmura, Orenda Elementary School; Jonathan Timpanaro, Mechanicville Elementary School; Ryan Ambrocio, Mechanicville Elementary School; Hannah Steil, Glenmont Elementary School and Caitlyn Roddy, Hamagrael Elementary School.
A Savings Certificate can help you save for something you may not need right now. These accounts earn more dividends than a regular Savings Account and are a really easy way to earmark money for a big purchase you are planning for. With terms from 9-36 months, we can customize your savings plan. Set up direct deposit, and you won’t have to think about the money again until you need it. Ask how we can help make saving easier for you! A penalty may be imposed for early withdrawals.

Educating themselves about investments and long-term planning can help women feel more comfortable with riskier – yet potentially more rewarding – investments.
Women and investing Women often face greater obstacles when it comes to investing for retirement. On average, women work fewer years and earn less than men. This means that they have lower pension and Social Security benefits. But they also have longer life expectancies, so they need to save even more for a longer retirement. Women must also consider the fact that a couple’s retirement savings may be significantly diminished by health care costs for the spouse who dies first – which is statistically more often men than women. In order to make up for these discrepancies, women may need to invest more aggressively and begin contributing to their retirement savings as early as possible. Historically, equity investments have provided higher returns over the long term than less-risky investments like money markets and short-term bonds. However, the higher potential returns of equities should be weighed against their
higher risk as well as your own goals and risk tolerance. Educating themselves about investments and long-term planning can help women feel more comfortable with riskier – yet potentially more rewarding – investments. Women should also take steps to obtain information about the retirement benefits that are available through employers and actively participate in any plans offered. An investment professional is an excellent source of information and guidance to sort through the many choices available. Most important, women need to recognize the unique challenges they face and start saving and investing as early as possible to overcome them. To meet with a CAP COM Financial Services Advisor to discuss your unique retirement planning options, call us at (518) 782-0209 or visit www.capcomfinancial.com/contact.
