President/CEO Message

Over several months, we’ve experienced enormous change in our lives. As we adjust to the “new normal,” ordinary things we once took for granted now feel special. Family, friends, co-workers – people you can count on. We need each other more than ever. I continue to be amazed by our incredible employees who serve you. Taking care of members, employees, and our communities is CAP COM’s mission in action. So, let us help you manage your financial well-being, overcome budget challenges, and take control of your finances. I urge you – as I’ve urged family and friends – to benefit from some of the

lowest interest rates I’ve seen in my lifetime, here at CAP COM now. You can save money by refinancing your car loan or mortgage. If you have other debt, consider consolidating into a lower-rate loan. Remember, our teams are here to help put you in the best financial position possible. The clouds of the pandemic can have silver linings. Even so, we look forward to brighter days. On behalf of all of us at CAP COM, please stay safe and be well.

Shopping Scams

MEET JENN “Your smile is your personal logo.” Jenn Bethon, Senior Financial Services Associate We caught up with Jenn early one morning before the branch opened. She shared her experience serving members over the last several months. Q. What’s it been like since CAP COM branches reopened? A. I was nervous at first. I wasn’t sure if members would be upset about following new branch rules, like wearing a mask. I’ve been pleasantly surprised. Overall, there’s a feeling that we’re in this together. Q. What are some ways you’ve helped members during this time? A. I’ve helped members set up online banking, so they can bank from the

comfort of home. With financial pressures bearing down, members want information on loan relief and how to apply. Q. Have you seen any positive changes? A. Our drive-thru has become popular, with many members now saying they prefer it. Everyone has shown a lot of respect for our tellers. That means so

Savvy consumers aren’t the only ones on the hunt yearround. As shoppers seek the best online deals and discounts, thieves are waiting to pounce. Protect your finances and personal information by steering clear of questionable merchants. You’ll want to avoid unfamiliar websites offering deals too good to be true. Recently, we spotted a website with UGG® boots for $19.99. No thanks! See 6 tips to skip the scams: www.capcomfcu.org/6tips

much to our team. Did you know you can conduct many of the same transactions at a drive-thru as you can inside a branch? See drive-thru services at: www.capcomfcu.org/drivethru

EMERGENCY FUND OPTION Saving up an emergency fund to cover six months of expenses can take years. Now with interest rates at historic lows, eligible homeowners have options – like tapping their home’s equity to create a financial safety net. CAP COM’s Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC) enables homeowners to establish a credit line based on their home’s equity – with no closing costs!2 Cash can be accessed as needed, and interest is paid only on the amount borrowed. Everybody’s situation is different. See how a HELOC can supplement your savings and let us help you find a solution that works best for you and your finances. More at www.capcomfcu.org/heloc 2. Mortgages in New York State only. All Lines of Credit require a minimum initial advance of $5,000 and a minimum limit of $10,000. No closing costs on home equity lines of credit (HELOCs) up to $250,000. Discharge fees and overnight shipping charges are excluded where applicable. If the HELOC is paid and closed within 3 years of the closing date there is a recapture fee in which you will have to reimburse the Credit Union for all closing costs paid on your behalf. Estimated recapture fee examples include $457 in closing costs and a maximum average of $2,475 in New York state mortgage tax for Albany, Schenectady, and Rensselaer counties. Actual closing costs and mortgage tax may be different. CAP COM FCU NMLS Identifier: 401261.

Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) is meant to pay for costs Original Medicare doesn't cover. Yet, understanding the program and finding a policy that's a good match isn't always easy. My Health Coverage Needs Start by asking yourself:  Did I have problems with my medical plan last year?  Can I afford my current plan?  Do I want supplemental coverage?  How much traveling will I do next year?  Was I recently diagnosed with a new illness?  Will I need dental or vision coverage?  Do I need a separate prescription drug plan? Your answers can help identify a policy to fill gaps in basic coverage. Now, take the next step and attend our Medicare Webinar. You'll learn how to compare policies based on your needs and select the right one for you. Expanded schedule this fall!
