A Note from the Head of School

Since coming to CCA as Head of School last January, I have made a special project of directing peoples’ attention to the word “alumni.” The reason for this is three-fold: 1) CCA has not done enough to keep alumni connected with the school—something that might have been understandable in our first 20 years but went on for too long as our alumni matured and were hungry for connection with the values of the school; 2) CCA was, is, and always will be YOUR school to care about and sustain; it is not just the school of each successive generation of tuition-paying parents; and

3) your lives are embodiments of CCA’s exceptional outcomes—the ways in which you are building meaningful lives say volumes about the importance of CCA’s mission and the imperative that is should continue to exist for Cape Codders into the future.

I have met over 150 of our 750 alumni. Your stories about your CCA experiences and the ways they have shaped your life choices are so encouraging to current students, faculty, and parents considering the school’s value for their own children.

Cape Cod Academy continues to be a community where students develop the character, confidence and skills to shape their own future.

Our students succeed by excelling in their natural strengths and by being challenged beyond their intellectual and social-emotional growing edges.

This continuing journey of selfdiscovery creates a student that is mature, self-aware, and has a strong sense of purpose and confidence.

Hey Mr. Andrews!

I credit the vast amount of inspiration that has accumulated within myself over the past four years to you, Mr. Lewison, and Mr. Larry Brown’s teachings.

I first wanted to say hello and I hope everything is going great back at CCA! Furthermore, I also wanted to write to let you know how much of a tremendous impact your Philosophy class (back in 2012) had on my now upstarting career. Four years later and a Philosophy minor turned into a major, and that major has led to a Masters of Art in Teaching program with my undergraduate college, Florida Southern College in Lakeland, FL. I’m currently a Philosophy major with minors in Business Administration and Spanish, involved in Theta Alpha Kappa (the religious studies/theology honor society) and leading discussions in the college’s philosophy club. I’m also in the midst of research for my senior thesis on pedagogy in Aristotle’s Lyceum,

You could probably teach Philosophy to hundreds of seniors going through CCA over the duration of several years, and maybe a few will end up changing the course of their college studies based on that experience—I’m constantly reminded to be thankful to count myself among them.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to contribute specifically to the Humanities Department at Cape Cod Academy—whether it’s directed donations, book recommendations, et cetera.

ALUMNI Spotlight Sonya Mitchell ’88 A note from Jean McCutcheon, Director of Development The entire CCA community wishes congratulations to Sonya Mitchell ’88 who was recently elected to serve as Vice-Chair of Cape Cod Academy’s Board of Trustees, the school’s first alum to serve on the Executive Committee of the Board. Sonya has been a dedicated Board member since 2000, our first alum to be a trustee, and has served as Chair of the Committee on Trustees since 2003. Sonya understands and upholds the mission of the school and brings to the board an historical perspective, having been a student at our school during its second decade. Board Chair Roger Boocock adds that “Sonya is very thoughtful and perceptive at Board and Committee meetings, offering sound judgment.” In her professional life, Sonya is engaged with young families on the Cape, many of whom have CCA connections. And as an alumna, she brings to the Board the perspective of someone who actively connects the past with the future of CCA.

Hallie Stidham always liked math and science, and right before she started seventh grade, she realized she really wanted to become an engineer. She found out at summer camp. That’s how it all started.

Her interest led her to High Point University from her home in Dennis, Massachusetts. Today, Stidham is a senior, and her success in both academics and leadership has earned her another distinction: Extraordinary Leader for the month of October.

She earned it because of her leadership in the Society of Physics Students and her volunteerism

encouraging youngsters, particularly girls, to see the excitement of studying science.

She does love the definitive logic math and science provides, and she is the only woman among HPU’s 26 physics majors. But that’s not the only thing that sets her apart.

This year, she led a five-person team that designed a tool for astronauts that caught the attention of NASA. How? HPU, Stidham says.

“I never would have guessed I’d be at this place in my life today,” she says. “All that hard work I put into school has paid off.”

Members of the Class of 2015 returned to campus in January to make a special announcement at our all-school community meeting.

ALUMNI COLLOQUIUM A note from the colloquium host, Mrs. Christine Brown, Director of College Counseling On January 7, 2016 we hosted CCA’s annual Alumni Colloquium & Lunch. If you are not familiar When they graduated last spring, they pledged to stay connected in many ways with each other and faculty by attending class gatherings, and pledged to support the school’s Annual Fund for five years. They announced their commitment to our current students, encouraging them to continue this new tradition.

As a thank you to the Class of 2015, and a physical reminder of the spirit and energy of this class, Tom Trigg presented the class with the “Peabody Bell”.

This bell was given to CCA by long-time staff member, Carrie Peabody Christopher and her husband Dennis, parents of Jay Christopher and Holly Christopher Cable ’89. The bell is from an old Navy ship and it will be mounted appropriately to be able to move around campus. The bell will be rung on special occasions in recognition of achievements and to celebrate the spirit of CCA. We thank the Class of 2015 and the Christopher family for their commitment to CCA.

Jessica Rimington ‘04

is part of the leadership team of The Rules, a global collective of activists and organizers addressing the root causes of inequality and poverty, and also serves as a Visiting Scholar with Stanford’s Global Projects Center. Jess founded the social enterprise One World Youth Project, a non-profit which links schools around the world to build mutual respect and understanding among students and provide global life skills. Chelsea Curtis ’05 a graduate of Georgetown Univ. has been named to the MA golf team that played in Sept. 2015 for the USGA’s Women’s State Team Championship.

became engaged to Matthew Walker and they plan to have an August wedding on the Cape.

Eric Eldredge ‘09 is a

middle school teacher at the Sandwich STEM Academy and also works for Extra Credit Tutoring, a company that helps with college counseling, SAT and ACT prep.

Drew Frayre ‘09 joined the Boston November 2015 alumni event and lives in Malden. He is a Digital Marketing Analyst at Chimaera Labs in Cambridge. He manages SEO, web analytics, and content marketing for tech clients.

Anthony Salamone ‘09

He is a PhD candidate in Politics at The University of Edinburgh and has been working in the Edinburgh Europa Inst., the University’s research centre on European integration. He designed and manages a blog; European Futures www. european-futures.org.

Christopher Curtis ’10

recently moved to San Francisco and accepted a position with the Giants as a Part Time Baseball Operations Assistant.

He will be helping out on the administrative side of the Amateur, Professional, and Advance scouting departments. A part of his job is to help the efforts in preparing for the amateur draft and trade deadline this summer. He is thrilled with this new job and excited to learn how the Giants organization drafts, develops, and evaluates players.

Julie Mahdavi ’10 lives in NYC. She graduated from UMass with a B.S. degree, Marketing and Events.

She interned at Chanel, Inc. for the marketing and special events department, then worked as a production administrator for Rue La La. Julie is now enrolled at Parsons the New School for design completing her master’s in fashion studies. She was published last semester in a book titled “Victims of Style” where she discusses issues of violence in regards to the hijab.

She is also an intern for The Common Threads Project. She researches why people wear what they wear according to areas in the city.

Nick Monto ‘10 is pursuing his masters in speech pathology at UCONN. Mollie Kinlin ‘10 attended the November 2015 Boston Alumni event and is living in Boston and working for Robert Paul Properties.

Katie Burleson ‘11

She will be in Miami for a year then may transfer to a city abroad to continue her studies. She noted “It’s a shame I never took any Spanish! It’s all very exciting and crazy, I never thought I’d move to Miami!”

Tessia Dvorsack ’14 is a sophomore at UVM. She is in Physical Therapy school and does some volunteer hospice work, and hopes to get a job tutoring for Anatomy classes.

Lydia Dick ’14 is a sophomore at Rice Univ. in TX. She is majoring in Art History and Cognitive Sciences, with a minor in neuroscience. She is working as a coordinator for Rice’s largest alumni event, is writer for Rice’s newspaper, and will be going on an 11 day research trip to Cuba focused on art history.

She has also worked in a lab conducting research involving developing a protein construct for X-ray crystallography teaching methods, was an orientation week advisor, a Biology TA, and has worked on many different committees coordinating cultural events at Rice.

Jordan Edmonds ‘15 is a

freshman at Bucknell and told us she is thrilled with her college choice and it’s been such a “great experience because I have met so many new people that I never would have met otherwise”. She was

selected to be on the crew team and couldn’t be happier!

Will O’Connor ’15

stopped in during the holiday break and brought a few delicious chocolate pies for faculty. He finished his first semester at the Univ. of Edinburgh in Scotland and is very happy with his choice! He likes the fact that you can just take classes in your major (accounting, in his case) without having to fulfill all the “distribution requirements” as at U.S. colleges. Will says he feels very well prepared

by CCA, especially by Mrs. Agostinelli’s AP Economics class.

Jack Massari ‘15 is a freshman at University of CT and has joined Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity which he chose due to its community service commitment. He is also playing sports.

Cam Gardner ‘15 earned a 4.0 his first semester at Elon and was voted Dorm Ambassador.

Katie Bailey ‘15 emailed

from BC, “I feel CCA has prepared me well for college, especially with the ability to write a 4-5 page paper assigned a few days before it is due. I am taking Calculus 1, Freshman Writing, MicroEconomics, and Perspectives. Perspectives is a year-long course that satisfies both my theology and philosophy requirements. We have completed Plato’s Five Dialogues, the majority of the Republic, and Oedipus Tyrannus. I am glad I developed an appreciation for literature during my Sophomore and Junior English classes with Ms. Johnson, otherwise this could have made for a long year.”

Diehl Longstaff ’15 is a freshman at Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH and is an Official Scorekeeper for Xavier Intramural Sports.

ARTISTIC Endeavors

Hannah Van Sciver ’10 brought her onewoman smash-hit solo show Bicycle Face to the Cotuit Center for the Arts in late February. The performances benefited two local non-profit women’s organizations WE CAN and Independence House. The AwardWinning poet and actress performed the 40 minute original play about the interconnected stories of three fictional women, separated by a century each, navigating the changing landscape of feminism, censorship and cycling. Bicycle Face is a multidisciplinary, multimedia theatrical joyride through the feminist movement and its unlikely relationship with the bicycle. The show is

framed by a college class taught in the year 2125, and employs live music, projections and puppetry. The piece, which was first developed in June 2015, sold out its run in Philadelphia’s prestigious SolowFest, and toured New Orleans in Razor’s Edge Solo Performance Festival this past November. Philadelphia press called the piece, “equally smart, funny and provocative.” Hannah last appeared on Cape as a featured poet at the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra 375 Town of Barnstable Anniversary Concert. She previously appeared on Cape for three consecutive years with the nationally recognized spoken word poetry collective, The Excelano Project.

ATHLETIC News LAX is Back

CCA Sailors to Ireland

This Spring we will offer boys lacrosse for the first time since the Spring of 2013. CCA athletic director Jeff Conlon announced the school has hired Kevin O’Neil, president of Barnstable Youth Lacrosse, to take over as Head Coach. Coach O’Neil helped start the lacrosse program at St. Thomas More School in Connecticut, and went on to play for both Syracuse University and UMass-Dartmouth. Go Seahawks!

Nine Upper School Students and four Middle School students will be sailing in Ireland within the next few weeks.

We are proud that our team has been selected and invited to participate in this International sailing event from March 16-21. They will be staying with host families in Cork, Ireland and enjoying St. Patrick's Day while there.

Times paper route... but the first real job that felt like a job was as a dishwasher at the Piccadilli Deli in South Yarmouth. My first paying job in the field which would become my career was as a late night announcer at age 15 at WOCB 1140 AM, West Yarmouth.

My favorite ice cream is… I prefer savory over sweet.

Advice for college freshmen… the freshman 15 is

real! Seriously though, enjoy your college experience. I worked fulltime while in college, more out of desire than necessity, and in hindsight I missed out on a lot. If I could do it all over again, I would have immersed myself more in campus life.

The best advice I ever got was... “Let your past make

you better, not bitter”. The age old saying, “everything happens for a reason” is true, where we are in life currently is a direct reflection on the successes and failures we made along the way. Holding on to grudges or past indiscretions only make us angry, but if you look at it from the perspective that every mistake we made along the way has shaped the person we have become...changes your personal outlook towards life, and towards yourself completely!

The app I most check on my phone is… Facebook.

When I think of home, I think of… Cape Cod. My secret weapon at work is… peace & quiet :).

I work from home.

The best advice I ever got was… do what makes

you happy. When it no longer makes you happy, find something else to do.

Advice for college freshmen… keep your door open;

invite your floor roommates to come in, say hi; do the same, walk around to the different floors in the building and meet people; some of the first people I met on my floor/building are still very dear/close friends to this day.

My go-to news source is… the Internet; I read my local

paper online almost every day.

Advice for college freshmen… try to play out your

career and social lives in your head so you don’t get caught singing Rod Stewart “I wish that I knew what I know now, when I was younger.”

The key to long-lasting friendships is… be real with

each other and talk through drama. Life long friends are hard to come by and not something everyone has. Hold on to the relationships that matter most and keep in touch when you move away.

When I think of home, I think of… anywhere my family is.

My secret weapon at work is… I work in sales, which

relies heavily on relationships. Before meeting with a potential customer I will scan their office for photos and personal items that I can use as ice breakers. Quite often talking about a family Disney vacation photo or their autographed Red Sox picture can ease tension and start a meeting off on a positive note. This can be applied to just about any career. People will remember you if you take the time to get to know them personally and I have built my career by networking this way.

The best advice I ever got was… surround yourself with

good people and you will be successful.

My dream job is… to travel the world taking photos.

desired career, however have a backup plan. College does not guarantee you’ll land that dream job right away. Hard work and patience does pay off. Call home often…

Cape Cod Academy is your school.

You walked the halls, ate in the Commons, played on the fields, learned to sing in the pavilion, hung out in Senior Corner. You discussed Philosophy with Mr. Daggett and Mr. Andrews, civics and the world around us with Mr. Brown, developed photographs with Mrs. Tanzer, learned species of birds with Mr. Crowell, navigated the college process with Mr. Brown, Mrs. Bellamy, or Mrs. Brown, tried your hand at pottery with Ms. Rapp, ran the extra lap for Mr. Kenney, discussed your reading interests with Mr. Bellamy or Mr. Lewison‌the faculty, community spirit and the campus you remember is as vibrant as ever.

These programs, and the many new programs we have, are possible because our community helps support our Annual Fund. The Annual Fund provides resources to give our teachers the tools they need to do their best work for today’s students.
