t Casabella Interiors, a boutique and high-end interior design service, perfect is the standard.

“I have always loved the hunt for that perfect something, whether it’s a sofa, dresser, or piece of artwork,” Michele Chagnon-Holbrook, president of Casabella Interiors says. After 10 years in the business, Casabella’s boutique is an impressive, curated collection of found objects, thanks to ChagnonHolbrook’s passion for discovering those perfect pieces. Together, the boutique and interior design service make Casabella Interiors a high-touch business specializing in the extraordinary.

CASABELLA INTERIORS

After a long corporate career, Chagnon-Holbrook decided to take on a new challenge. Within her first month of opening a home furnishing shop in Sandwich, customers began to ask her to pick out their own furnishing needs. This soon led to designing entire residences and assisting in the concept-to-build process. With new build projects, the Casabella team gets involved in all aspects of the home from flooring, to windows and doors, to electrical and tile to ensure clients receive the best of the best throughout the project. The team also includes crews for cabinetry, electrical, plumbing and painting to alleviate stress for the client. “We create an experience for our clients. Eternal detailing is what we do. Each house tells a story. To create that story, it’s our job to learn the kind of details the homeowner wants to tell. Design is in our DNA,” Chagnon-Holbrook shares. “We do the entire house for our clients so when they open the door, candles are lit, beds are made, and accessories are on the coffee tables. We are really turning these houses into homes. It’s not just items they’ve purchased from Casabella—they’ve really found objects that tie into their history,” she continues.

The shop features over 3,000 vendors that have been thoughtfully selected. “Our shop is a physical representation of how hard our team has worked to reach the level that we have. We go out and jury everything and bring in the best. I like to brand us as masters of the uncommon.” For Casabella Interiors, it comes down to thought and service. Chagnon-Holbrook and her team go the extra mile to bring their clients’ stories to life. For every project, the company takes a team approach for added efficiency and collaboration, continually staying ahead of timelines. “I have an amazing staff. We push ourselves every day to work at our peak and beyond. Providing that unrivaled service in this industry is really what we’re all about,” she says. Whether in the boutique or through design services, Casabella Interiors delivers an extraordinary experience.

esign that makes a difference.

When designing a new home or a substantial renovation, some architectural features work harder than others in terms of the overall visual impact, utility, and value they deliver to the home. Longfellow Design Build owner Mark Bogosian explains, “We’ve never been interested in lowerquality construction. Instead, we give homeowners who may be working with a budget a quality baseline construction and then offer a variety of custom upgrade options that we know will make a real difference in their home’s value.” Bogosian continued, “Choice of cabinets is a good example. We don’t offer a particle board cabinet option because we don’t believe they stand up to the level of quality our customers expect. Our entry-level line is plywood/hardwood constructed, and then, as a client’s budget allows, we can add custom features or upgrade to our fully custom line. Quality cabinetry makes a difference.”

LONGFELLOW DESIGN BUILD

So, what else makes a difference? We asked the experts, Longfellow’s design team, to brainstorm features that make the most difference in a new home or renovation. All agree that larger, open concept rooms where people can be together while focusing on different activities (i.e., cooking dinner and doing homework) make a significant difference in how people feel about their home. An open layout also increases the home’s sight-lines and improves visual access to windows, increasing natural light flow throughout the house.

distinct areas within an open concept great room. The addition of an elegant feature wall of shiplap beadboard is an inexpensive upgrade that adds style and character to a home. Historically, shiplap provided insulation to rooms. Today, a beadboard accent wall’s horizontal or vertical lines are an ideal design upgrade for making smaller homes with lower ceilings feel larger while invoking a classic, cozy, cottage style. Custom built-ins also make an enormous difference in a home’s quality factor. Especially on Cape Cod, where homes often have smaller footprints, the use of built-in shelves, drawers, bunk-beds, mud-room, storage, a wet-bar, or media shelves can provide a more spacious, organized living space. “Custom millwork starts as a creative collaboration between the homeowner, architect, designer, and our very talented finish carpenters. Says Longfellow designer Lisa Courtney. “Customers often think they can’t afford custom; however, it is our job to present creative options beyond what they thought possible– and often, we can make it work.”

The addition of a coffered or vaulted ceiling to a home can make a powerful statement about a home’s level of craftsmanship and quality. Many open-concept projects combine a kitchen, dining room, and living room into one large space. The design team often uses architectural ceiling elements to subtly define the

t Pastiche of Cape Cod, interior design is about curating beautiful spaces that truly improve a client’s quality of life.

For Irina MacPhee, president of Pastiche of Cape Cod, interior design is about improving her clients’ quality of life by creating the solution to their dreams. After almost 34 years in the business, Pastiche of Cape Cod is a design staple not only locally, but for clients across the nation. “For us, it’s about improving the quality of life through design,” says MacPhee. “We give the extra 20 percent in everything that we do. It’s that personal relationship and service that we really care about. That is what we do differently.”

PASTICHE OF CAPE COD

When her company began, the Cape lacked a place for people to find quality sheets, towels, or unique home accents. Pastiche of Cape Cod’s previous storefront became that hub. Now, they have shifted to a full-service design company that fulfills an array of remodeling needs. “The Cape has grown so much, and now we are focused on remodeling and interior design. We have our own line of cabinetry and do kitchens and baths,” MacPhee says. Especially now, as people refocus on their homes, her team is ensuring they shift to offer the best, most timely services possible. “Times have changed and we have been blessed that we have recognized trends, paid attention to the pulse of the design world and listened to our clients to fulfill those needs,” she adds. In the past year, MacPhee’s daughter Adin

Weatherley has officially stepped on board as senior project manager, adding her own flair to their work. For the past 15 years, MacPhee has been perfecting her own fully custom cabinet line called Water-Mark©. This high-quality cabinetry was designed to continually offer the best value to her clients. As MacPhee believes, “It is the best investment you can make. I use it in most of my projects because I believe it is the best option for the client. I ask myself, if I were the client, what would I want? The best value—so let’s provide that.” It is that level of care and understanding that continues to distinguish Pastiche’s work. No detail is ever overlooked, and every corner is thoughtfully accounted for. “It’s not just about buying things; it’s always about improving quality of life,” MacPhee notes. Her final results are timeless spaces, regardless of particular style. “It’s identifying a client’s dreams and translating that into the scope of the project to get them where they can’t even imagine. We really care about our clients; I remain friends with most of them for years to come. There’s a reason for that: they know we want what is best for them. My favorite moment is the reveal where it all comes together,” she reflects. In each of Pastiche of Cape Cod’s projects, the quality and attention to detail is evident. Beginning with a vision, the talent behind Pastiche transforms spaces into breathtaking havens where homeowners can unwind amidst an atmosphere truly curated to their style.

ellew Tile and Marble is helping beautify homes from Boston to Cape Cod with the finest selection of tile.

Decades of building experience combined with innovative design expertise are the elements of a successful building project.

What’s more quintessential Cape Cod than working with a familyowned and operated business to make sure your home really feels like home? At Bellew Tile and Marble, Jimmy Bellew and his family are here to help you. With showrooms in West Yarmouth and Rockland, Bellew Tile has been helping Cape Codders and nonCape Codders alike with the tiling of their dreams.

Owner Paul van Steensel founded Cape Dreams over 15 years ago after establishing a foundation of building fundamentals while working for some of the top building firms on the Cape. Allen Furman joined the company in 2019 with over 17 years of design expertise, a degree in construction engineering and project management as well as LEED certification. Brendan Lowney rounds out the team with even more experience in the building industry. Together, the team is abundantly prepared to help homeowners realize their dreams, and their commitment and creative solutions ensure that each project is as unique and distinctive as the owners themselves.

With over 30 years of experience helping Boston and the South Shore, the Bellew Tile and Marble team opened up their West Yarmouth showroom two years ago and are proud to offer Cape Cod its largest selection of tile. The 6,000-foot design showroom ensures that every client can find what they are looking for, and with the team’s expert advice, it’s impossible to go wrong. Bellew works closely with homeowners, contractors, designers and architects to make sure everything goes smoothly. “Most of the people who come in have been sent by their designers or contractors,” says owner Jimmy Bellew. “We work with clients from start to finish, whether it’s a kitchen remodel or a full bath or a brand new six bedroom house. We start by brainstorming what they really want and get ideas of what kind of theme or color they’re looking for, whether they want modern or beach-house style or something else.”

Building on the Cape involves unique challenges, which the team have successfully navigated year after year. Their commitment to quality as well as solution-based collaboration with designers, trades and town officials is all part of the experience Cape Dreams brings to every project. “There are always the basics in any building project,” van Steensel says. “But it is the little things that add up to the greatest impact. Hearing the client’s needs and wants is crucial to a successful outcome.” Furman concurs, “Every homeowner is unique; the challenge is to understand their needs and deliver a product that exceeds expectations.” CAPE DREAMS BUILDING & DESIGN.

BELLEW TILE AND MARBLE

At Bellew Tile and Marble, there’s no pressure; it’s about finding the material that is completely right for you. “It’s a more laid-back environment. We love sending clients home with samples, especially when the material contains any kind of variation. We want to make sure our clients know exactly what they are getting.” It’s that kind of customer service and attention to detail that have kept Bellew as the premier tile and marble provider for Cape Cod and beyond.

or interior spaces defined by casual elegance, Cathy Kert Interiors is the place to trust.

What began as a commitment of moving from Boston to Nantucket for one year has developed into a 20year change of plans for interior designer Carolyn Thayer. And she couldn’t be happier. Carolyn did not chart a traditional path to her career in interior design, but instead came to it through hands-on experience. When she first moved to the island, she began working with a friend at their interior design business, but it was really when her new home needed an upholstery overhaul that Carolyn gained traction and her work caught the eye of her island community.

Kert describes her style as “casual elegance,” translating spaces into fresh, livable, timeless designs. Her passion is in collaborating with her clients and colleagues. “I love helping people create their most comfortable and attractive spaces where they can express themselves, their lifestyles and families,” Kert reflects. Kert is a recipient of the Certified Aging in Place Certification (CAP) and is an allied member of the American Society of Interior Designers, which influences her approach to design. “We look into the safety and well-being of our clients’ spaces to ensure it’s always going to be both functional and beautiful, but I also help them design a space that will take them from now into the next 30 years,” she says.

Her design business, Carolyn Thayer Interiors, grew organically from these experiences into an awardwinning firm with an on-island office and soft fabrications workroom, and a storefront in the trendy South End neighborhood of Boston. Not confined to the landscape of Nantucket, Carolyn Thayer Interior’s portfolio includes projects in Boston and throughout mainland Cape Cod. Armed with these varying locations and a talented staff of nine, Carolyn still commits herself to being deeply involved with the design process of each project.

With 20 years of experience, CKI offers four levels of services across Massachusetts, beginning with fullservice interior design, where Kert joins projects with the architect or builder to assist with early planning. The company does full kitchen and bath design, also offering surface level updates that give the feel of a brand-new kitchen. Finally, Kert is well-versed in her interior decorating service, as well as staging homes for homeowners and realtors.

“It’s like a relationship, and you grow with it. You get to know the clients: what they like, what goes with the decor and how to enhance it, and how to keep adding the layers on,” says Carolyn. “It really has so much to do with the relationship with the person and the house.” Carolyn depends on building an understanding of her clients’ personal styles and interests to guide the projects and is as comfortable playing with understated elegance as well as more bold and contemporary styles. Bring her your Pinterest boards, your scrapbooks, your pages of inspiration torn from magazines, and she will deftly shape these ideas into a room—or house—that taps into the unique style and aesthetic of each client.

The quintessential Cape Cod home should provide the foundation for lifelong memories with loved ones. For Cathy Kert of Cathy Kert Interiors (CKI), designing a home takes into consideration aging in place and comfortably hosting guests, all while curating a clean, elegant environment.

“Our homes are the ultimate place we can be for privacy and comfort. To have a great home doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. You can be very thoughtful about how you plan things,” Kert says. “I love what I do. I am very honored to have people’s trust and be there for them,” she shares.

At Dillon & Company, you won’t find anything that owner Gill Dillon would not have in her own home. Sleek, clean lines rule the showroom—“nothing fussy,” laughs Dillon who opened the store with her husband, Dickie, after moving from England years ago. Dillon still travels home to England regularly to handpick pieces to bring back to her store in Plymouth where she is constantly rearranging the showroom to show off her new finds. “I love to mix modern with antique,” says Dillon of her style. “I have a lot of transitional and contemporary furniture in the shop, but I always try to also have a sprinkling of fun antique pieces as well. I think it helps give people a sense of how to mix the old with the new, like pairing fresh, fashionable upholstery with a lovely painted French antique sideboard.”

Interior designer Donna Elle is recognized for her distinctive, New England coastal aesthetic. Her ability to create interiors that are unique to each client lies not just in her professional experience, but in her adroit way of translating the beauty of natural surroundings into tailor-made homes. With a depth of knowledge garnered from decades in the industry and her ability to create a uniquely intimate design experience, Donna enriches a project—seamlessly connecting clients, builders, architects and contractors. Establishing a relationship of trust with her clients allows her to deliver a curated design process that encompasses the wholeness of a project—connecting the dots between the essence of the client and their surroundings.

ernbrook Interiors puts clients at ease with knowledge, expertise, and creative design.

eorge Davis offers design plus building services, which equals efficiency for clients.

Fernbrook Interiors in Osterville is an awardwinning interior design business that brings together comfort and aesthetic in every project. Owner Jayne Cedeno works closely with clients to turn dreams into reality with dynamic and extensive designs from kitchen and bathroom renovations to entire home remodels.

Buildings, like relationships, start with a solid foundation. At George Davis, Inc. integrity, thoughtful planning, realistic budgets, and a superior design build experience are the foundations of the projects they do, as are great relationships, from their team of designers and carpenters, to their trade partners and local vendors. You will be pleased to discover that you will actually enjoy your design build experience with them. Once it has been determined that your project appears feasible, they present a Design Agreement for consideration. This Design Phase addresses four major elements:

Regarding her creative journey, Cedeno reflects, “My involvement in design has been an organic process, growing from a casual interest in ‘nesting’ to a developing specialty in design and visual marketing for Pottery Barn, and now being an independent professional designer on Cape Cod.”

CONCEPT: The goal is to generate ideas and collaborate with the homeowner to develop a set of plans that meets the objectives of the project.

A former college professor, Cedeno found a creative and fulfilling career in the design world that utilized her teaching background as well. Her role in the industry offers a unique opportunity to inform and educate clients about resources, procedures, and strategies, thereby demystifying the process of design.

SCOPE OF WORK: It is critical to identify every last detail that needs to be accomplished and prepare a written set of specifications for the project. FEASIBILITY: The team explores the various permitting requirements and identifies any potential hurdles so that when that time comes, there are no surprises.

“By sharing my expertise on where to find wonderful furnishings or how to arrange the room, I find that my clients cannot just replicate what I design, but they can discover how to put their mark on their own homes,” says Cedeno.

BUDGET: Respect for the client’s budget involves monitoring and sharing the costs of the project as it moves through the Design Phase so that when they present the final quote, it is within the client’s expectations.

GEORGE DAVIS, INC.

FERNBROOK INTERIORS

In 2019, Fernbrook Interiors was rated Best of Houzz Service for realizing the visions of many individuals and families. From professional consultations to focused design in color, textiles, renovations, new builds, staging and overall attention to detail, Fernbrook Interiors prioritizes the client in making a space feel unique. “Interior design is part creativity and part problemsolving,” says Cedeno. “We adapt our environments to meet functional and aesthetic needs. It is a process by which we continue to grow and be happy. If this is the essence of my practical experience with design, it does not eclipse the underlying need we all have to experience beauty, symmetry, comfort and balance in our lives.”

The next step is the Pre-Construction Phase, where they prepare the plans to be permit and construction ready, obtain the permits, and develop a detailed schedule for this phase. Homeowners also work with their design team to fine-tune the client’s vision with regard to final selections of colors, tiles, fixtures, and flooring that reflect their taste and style. ophisticated design that exceeds clients’ expectations is what Holly Hudson delivers on a regular basis.

“We want our clients to love where they live, and having the right team on board can make that really easy,” says Lori LaBarge, owner of LaBarge Homes, a Cape-based custom build company with a real estate and property care division. “As a custom building company, our goal is to be an integral part of that team, helping our clients through the building process and being the point of contact for all their property needs.”

Life has taken Holly Hudson from Massachusetts to Italy, France, England and back home again to the Cape. Those experiences have given her a keen appreciation for design, architecture, diverse cultures and a love of antiques. Following a career in hospitality design and construction for three major hotels in Boston, she decided it was time to embark on an independent journey. “Returning from living abroad, I wanted to start my own business with a focus on residential design. After much reflection it was my goal to take my design experiences plus creative strengths and forge ahead in a new direction,” she explains.

Over the past 25 years, LaBarge Homes, owned by Lori and her husband Todd, has built not only stunning homes, but lifelong relationships with customers, consulting on everything from architecture to interior design and landscaping. Through their services in building and renovations, property management and design referral, LaBarge Homes matches clients with local professionals that are the right fit for them and their project. Finding that perfect match doesn’t happen without a deep commitment to quality service and trusting relationships with clients. “Our clients trust that we will connect them with the right architects, precisely adhere to budget requirements, and ultimately bring their property dreams to life,” says LaBarge.

In the beginning, Hudson first found her niche in retail home furnishings and says, “I had an opportunity to work with clients selecting furniture, developing color palettes and assisting them in the renovation process.” When transitioning from retail work to the hotel industry, her position grew to include developing skills in construction. The coming together of old and new plus the marriage of form and function set the path for her new business. Holly Hudson Designs is a small firm of highly talented professionals. Each project the team creates speaks specifically to the client’s lifestyle and individuality. Her design style is timeless and has a casual elegance that has longevity. The full-service firm specializes in interior and exterior architectural design from concept to completion. Projects have taken her from California, to Florida and throughout New England.

“I paint what I’m passionate about,” says owner and artist Ruth Odile Davis of Odile Fine Art in Harwich. Influenced by her summer sanctuary as a child—now the place she has called home for over 40 years— Odile continuously captures the infinite landscapes and breathtaking hues of the Cape and Islands in her unique, effervescent style. Odile began art lessons early, discovering her talent and passion in just fourth grade at the Berkshire Art Museum where she decided upon her signature name, Odile. She went on to train in watercolors, acrylics and pastels, until finally settling upon a medium she loved: oil. “Oil just produces the most vibrant colors and pigments,” explains Odile. She considers herself a colorist, painting on large canvases to give her landscapes a dynamic impact.

Based in a historic building in Brewster, Nautique is an inviting coastal haven. Malone offers full interior design service, whether you need wallpaper for a powder room or your home’s entire interior. With her substantial fabric library, featuring various lines at every price point, she crafts custom slip covers, upholstery, panels and pillows, among other needs.

NAUTIQUE

“It’s an honor when somebody invites you into their home to help create their sanctuary,” says Malone. “It’s the people who make it. Whatever it may be, everybody has a story.”

ODILE FINE ART

Nautique’s true claims to fame are their two custom furniture collections. The Nautique Sail Loft Collection features reclaimed wood from old barns, homes and sail lofts crafted into oneof-a-kind farm tables, end tables, beds or any other requests. The Nautique Coastal Collection uses premium grade mahogany and beadboard to create nautically inspired furniture tailored to each client. “I began making furniture about 12 years ago. We have our own carpenters and painters for our other products, so I thought, ‘Why not build people exactly what they want.’ It’s not something you can buy elsewhere,” Malone comments. “I have a cadre of craftspeople. I feel so proud of their work and feel confident when they go into one of my client’s homes. A lot of what we do are very unique pieces, which I think really sets us apart,” she says. Adding to their top-notch service, Nautique is a Hunter Douglas Certified Dealer with their own installer for all Hunter Douglas shades and window treatments.

NAUTIQUE

Surrounded by endless marshland, waterways and scenic landscapes, Odile’s sources for creativity are abundant. At times, her work will begin with a simple sketch or photo to get the pigment of a color just right, but more often, her work is purely formed from her own recollection and vision. In her memory, Odile grabs hold of a passing moment or feeling using color, imagination and loose brush strokes. Odile’s work has been featured in art shows and magazines, as well as in private and public collections. She finds the most important aspect of her work to be conjuring emotions in others, the same way that a scene captures her own heart. Odile’s color-driven landscapes evoke the familiar feeling of a place you can’t quite put your finger on, inviting the viewer to determine their own interpretation of the location, time and mood.

WINTER 2020

Shorebird Interiors founder and owner Wendy Kaiser Smith has been providing her clients meticulously composed designs for over 20 years. Trained as an architect and interior designer, Smith honed her eye for creativity at the School of Architecture at the University of Waterloo in Canada and even studied art and architecture in Italy. She is a member of the American Society of Interior Designers and founded her company, Shorebird Interiors, in 2014, bringing her knack for sophisticated design to the Cape. “It all begins with a feeling,” says Kaiser Smith, explaining that most of her clients reference an emotion they want a room to evoke, without necessarily knowing what they want the space to look like; aesthetically, this is where Kaiser Smith’s keen eye takes charge. Kaiser Smith is stylistically flexible when it comes to design. She works with clients to ensure all of her design sensibilities are responsive to their tastes and wants. She explains, “There’s always a checklist of what a client wants or needs to make a space their own, like durability for children or pets, for example.”

Kaiser Smith’s design style cannot be categorized as typical, cookie-cutter Cape Cod. “I try to reference where my client lives without begin too literal. I often bring in an abstract reference to the Cape here and there,” she explains. For example, she will integrate the environment or lifestyle of the Cape into a design by using warm tones, bright colors or textures to accomplish the relaxed style of the region in a way that is unique to Shorebird Interiors. Kaiser Smith is able to tackle projects, large and small, with the help of her handpicked team, consisting of craftsmen, carpenters and installers, enabling her to transform any home with tranquil, sustainable style. Shorebird Interiors’ new studio will be at 580-1 RTE. 28 in Harwich Port. Opening this spring!

ashashore Home brings dynamic perspectives to locals—and fellow washashores—across the region.

WASHASHORE HOME, INC.

Neither Sarah Waldo nor Peyton Lambton were born Cape-side of the Bourne or Sagamore Bridges, making them what locals refer to as “washashores.” Instead of brushing off this label, the two took the mantle up with pride, naming their design firm Washashore Home, Inc. in honor of their off-Cape roots. The dynamics between the two talented women turned out to be a perfect storm for collaboration, and Washashore was born. Their “rustic coastal” style is a melding of their backgrounds, and the mercurial nature of the coast, ever-changing in mood and texture, is an ongoing source of inspiration for the duo. “The sand and the waves—how that is constantly changing,” says Waldo of this inspiration so iconic to the region. “How it can feel really bright and clean and fresh, or how a misty day can be really serene and neutral. It’s just a dynamic influence that we love working with.”

They apply these themes to projects in ways that complement and highlight their clients’ own style. Sometimes a treasured heirloom or a special souvenir can serve as a starting point, anchoring the space. Often, it is the choice of material—a neutral tile in an interesting pattern or an unusual lighting fixture—that adds understated moments of excitement to their designs. One material they love exploring with their clients is wallpaper. The budget-friendly price point can allow more conservative clients to take a risk in smaller spaces, applying a playful print, texture or color as an unexpected and impactful accent. Their work is found across New England, but no matter how far from the Cape coast they travel, primary for Waldo and Lambton in their work will always be crafting spaces for their clients that are at once places of curated beauty and complete comfort.
