Transforming Children’s Lives
Email: bcnews@telkomsa.net
NOVEMBER 2018
No letting up! Not satisfied just driving children around the Belhar vicinity resident Norman Dada decided to form a non -profit organisation Kids off the Street. He observed many children sitting idle after school and not doing much. So in May he started with 4 kids growing to 35 children presently. Every day the children get music tuition learning how to play the guitar, flute, trumpet and keyboard. Plus a new genre dancing was recently added to expand the children’s repertoire. The children all hail from the Belhar precinct including a section refer to as Toilet City. A man who prefers to let his
deeds do the trick, Norman said, “To see the children enthusiasm to learn new skills is refreshing and fulfilling, that’s why I cannot stop.” The project is in need of more music equipment. On Saturday, a fundraiser was held at Belhar McDonalds, where cash sales generated between 5pm and 8pm, the Kids off the Streets benefited with 15% of total purchases. The organisation intends to take the children to Durban next year. Anyone interested is welcome to join the project. For more information call Norman Dada @ 074 381 2336.
They say dynamite comes in small packets, and this small group which gathered yesterday at Freedom Square is determined to hold the City of Cape Town and its public representatives accountable. Speaker after speaker told of their frustrations with current ward 50 councillor whilst the City continuously makes one-sided decisions without proper consultation. One example cited was the laying of red/orange gravel laid in front of houses, yet when it rains, the entire space is muddled leading to carpets and other furniture being spoilt. Other demands include regular cutting of grass, consistent collection of refuse, housing issues and rental stock, including question around title deeds. Other critical
ultimatums is to see the budget, specifically where monies are allocated without the community participation despite contrary claims by the City, which says the budget are open for scrutiny to locals. Those in attendance assert they have been battling to view an allocation list. Other matters raise is the public service works programme, which in its current format lends itself to nepotism, Metro Police to vacant the old clinic building which the City itself committed to plus additional services need to be accessible on Saturdays. The paltry crowd is by means an indicator of the amount of disillusionment prevailing in this area. Residents are tired of ‘swaarky!’ (Own correspondent)

DO NOT, LET 2018 END UP LIKE A HORROR MOVIE There is no reason in the world that you should not finish 2018 strong. Although the path you travel towards your destiny can create as much excitement and drama as a horror movie. Maybe you had a shaky start to 2018 but don’t read too much into that shaky start, finishing is more important than starting. History is filled with great starters who never finished well. You can have a strong finish. Ask yourself, how you will
be remembered in 2018. Nothing breaks God’s heart more than human beings not becoming what they were born to be and nobody gets God angrier than people who prevent other people from becoming what they were created to be. Yes there are many happy and unhappy endings in this world. What’s important, your failures, mishaps, mistakes, ugly parts are not a disgrace but an investment that God will use to equip you to have a strong finish. It is never too late to start all over again just put a stop to what’s stopping you. Step in your mess and see the value of your mistakes. Don’t lie down, get up, stand-

Dan Plato promises to be the listening mayor Staff Writer
A listening tour to hear first-hand concerns from citizens is a priority for Dan Plato as he takes the reins as Cape Town’s new executive mayor. “I am very much aware of the challenges facing our communities, but I want to give the people of this city a chance to engage with me, and I am calling on them not to let gatekeepers undermine them,” Plato said at his inauguration ceremony. Another top priority, he said, was addressing policing, which remains a major concern. He said he would recruit more Metro Police for the City to complement the role of the South African Police Service (SAPS). He commended the deployment of the specialised gang unit in the province but said “the reality is that we have fewer SAPS officers now than we have had in recent
years”.The situation of low levels of police in the city cannot be allowed, he said. While the rest of the country has one police officer for every 369 people, the ratio was one to 560. “Our police need the extra resources, and our communities need the extra police.” Plato lauded provincial minister Alan Winde, and Wesgro, for their accomplishment in bringing investment to Cape Town, which contributed to the city having the lowest unemployment rate compared to other major cities in South Africa. “There are, however, still people without jobs, so while we are proud of our achievements, we cannot sit back and say that our work is done.” The new mayor also thanked the residents who went out of their way to drastically reduce water use and change their approach to this scarce resource. Plato announces new mayco for the City By Munyaradzi Makoni Having taken over from ousted executive mayor Patricia de Lille, who conditionally resigned on 31 October after a drawn out political battle with her own party, last Sunday Dan Plato ushered in the new mayoral committee who are mandated to serve the residents of Cape Town. “The members I have chosen to serve on this committee have demonstrated their ability to carry out their duties with excellence, their commitment to work together as a united council, and their passion to serve the people of this city,” said Plato. He said the city’s residents, and visitors, deserve a well-run, corruption free, and focused city administration that is geared towards providing effective and efficient service delivery for all. The new mayoral committee has Ian Neilson continuing as the deputy mayor, James Vos for assets and facilities, Sharon Cottle in corporate services, and Marian Nieuwoudt in finance. Xanthea Limberg will remain
with informal settlements, water and waste services and energy, with JP Smith also staying in the social services, safety and security portfolio. Felicity Purchase replaces Brett Herron in the transport and urban development authority. The City’s area east will be handled by Phindile Maxiti, area south by Zahid Badroodien, area central by Malusi Booi and area north will be handled by Grant Twigg. Plato said the Organisational Development and Transformation Plan will be reviewed and is likely to result in a different structure, which will be taken to the next council meeting for ratification. “I would like to thank the former Mayco members for their service, and trust that they will continue to support this administration with the same energy and dedication that they have shown before,” he said. LET’S TALK BUSINESS PEOPLE: YOUR MOST VALUE ASSET
with Heinrich Jemane
Unless your business is a so-called “one-manband”, you will need people to make your business run successfully. In a perfect world staff never take off sick, have no personal issues, place high priority on the achievement of organisational goals and are totally satisfied with their salaries. The reality is that staff typically doesn’t live to work; they work to live. Our staff is human beings, they have families, financial needs and external priorities. As small business owners we need to acknowledge this, but simultaneously find ways to align staff behaviour to the priorities of the organisation. Below are a few ideas. From day one, staff needs to know and understand
their duties and the purposes thereof in the bigger organisation. To facilitate this, develop a manual of standard operating procedures within the business. This manual typically describes the role and procedures of every position and department within the organisation. Make sure that everyone has one handy and understands it. effective way of doing this is to set realistic, If necessary, periodically test that staff remain achievable personal and departmental goals. Staff performance should be measured familiar with the contents thereof. against the achievement of these goals. As business owner, make time to communicate Simultaneously, the consequences of nonthe strategic business objectives with staff. Help performance should be communicated and employees understand their role therein. If staff personally addressed without delay. understands the bigger vision for the business, “Train people well enough so they can leave, it will give their respective jobs purpose. treat them well enough so they don’t want Ensure that staff performance is measured. Neighbours rally behind food fair
The annual food fair of Mimosa Primary School prove a resounding success this year. Particularly pleasing was the support of residents staying around the school
perimeter. For the past couple of months the school has been caught in the middle of gang shootings. These shootings occurred between school hours traumatizing learners
and educators alike. Hence the food fair was an event beyond its normal scope of activities. Numerous stakeholders together with the school management use this occasion to
illustrate the capacity and organisation skills to host an event amidst this chaos, and will not allow a few senseless characters to wreak havoc. The day belongs to all who attended. (Copy submitted)

This dedicated enforcement unit is to focus on the safety and security of Metrorail commuters and infrastructure. The Rail Enforcement Unit will assist the existing security services
with the challenges the Metrorail service is currently facing, including sustained attacks on the rail infrastructure and assets, the sabotage of the urban rail network and the safety of commuters and rail employees. The officers were recruited by the City and have undergone extensive training over the past few months.
