Women fight for right to safety Written by Dale Hes

In South Africa women often struggle to find access to the justice system. In cases of Gender-Based Violence, a lack of financial resources and access to quality legal services works against many women. For more than 20 years, the Women’s Legal Centre (WLC) has fought for the rights of marginalised women. An all-women team of advocates, attorneys and other legal professionals works in various areas, including the prevention of violence against women. “We have a regular and free service where women can come into our offices or call us to receive free legal advice. We also coordinate two free legal advice clinics in Khayelitsha and at the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court. If we are unable to assist women, we refer them to the relevant government department, non-governmental organisation, law centre or court,” explains WLC Director Seehaam Samaai. “In South Africa, women face grave violations of their rights to safety and dignity, which impacts negatively on women and society at large. We attend to cases that combat the infringement of these rights, and improves the access of women and (girl) children to state protection from violence, particularly sexual and domestic violence,” Samaai says.

The centre has achieved a number of victories in the courtroom which have advanced women’s rights and played a role in strengthening the legal system to crack down on GBV. In 2017 and 2018, the WLC was involved in the case against alleged sex offender Sidney Frankel. The court confirmed a change in the Constitution, which allows sexual

offenders to be prosecuted 20 years after offences were carried out. Frankel was alleged to have sexually abused a number of children in the 1970s and 80s. In 2018, with the assistance of the WLC, a landmark ruling was made in the case, when the court ruled that section 18 of the Constitution was unconstitutional, and that all sexual offenders should

WCED and partners observes World AIDS Day A World AIDS Day event at the Rosewood Primary School Hall brought together a committed team of NGOs, government, civil society, faith-based organisations, schools and the community to stamp out stigma, discrimination, treatment fatigue and HIV/AIDS myths and misconceptions.

South African youth (aged 15 – 24) remain the most vulnerable group in terms of HIV infection – over a third of all new infections come from this age group, with adolescent girls and young women at particular risk. But stigma, fear, myths and misconceptions still persist. The World AIDS Day event hopes to change this by offering the community easy access to free testing, information, counselling and other health services. It is a celebration of community, family, health and activity. (copy & pic submitted)

Orchid Seniors Christmas Party

Well-deserved festive celebrations were the order of the day as Orchid seniors gathered at the Thusong (Multi- Purpose) Centre for their annual Christmas party. For the past 10 months these seniors have been meeting at least twice a week for arts and crafts, board games, general chatter, sewing and other various projects. The Orchid Seniors Christmas Party brings community seniors together for a day of entertainment and fun! Those in attendance were able to enjoy delicious snacks of meat, cheese, fruits and vegetables, as well as coffee and tea. And the seniors were told to Celebrate the holiday season! (copy submitted)

Residents from Mahogany, Netreg and Poinsettia Streets were alerted to a number of social ills which dogged parents and young people in the immediate neighbourhood. Community leaders spearheaded by Claudine Pretorius and Natasha Lodewyk decided to intervene and call a meeting to address some of these concerns. A group of twenty, mostly women gather and decided to hold weekly meetings where they could assist and support each other. To add further impetus to the program and to provide an outside perspective Angelo Coetzee was call in to facilitate a couple of parenting sessions, much to the delight of many. After every session, the group become more enthusiastic and henceforth committed themselves to continue to attend classes twice per week at Netreg Community Centre. The convenors Natasha and Claudine together with Angelo were completely overwhelmed by this response. And so much so, every week three senior citizens from the surrounding area were in attendance to share their experiences plus highlight their challenges. Those in attendance were empowered through a Personal Development Program and tasked to set personal goals to measure improvements whilst recognizing where shortcomings are needed. The trio of Claudine, Natasha and Angelo syndicated well as all three are familiar with a program of this nature and thus gave willingly of their energy and time. At an intimate get-together, Angelo, Michael Arendse (spiritual leader) and participants throughout the 3-month program were handed a certificate of appreciation. Not resting on their laurels, the group is determined to effect change and invites more men and young people to join them next year as they plot a course towards The Power to Change lies in Your Own Hands. Let the Past Pass

I would like to take the opportunity to wish the Management and Staff and the loyal readers of Cape Flats Newspaper a Blessed, Peaceful and an unforgettable festive season. May the good Lord protect and watch over you during this holiday period. 2019 has been

a difficult year for many and I can hear you say thank goodness this year is nearly over; I do not want another year like it. As the year draws to a close one tends to look back, take stock and do introspection and resolve to make 2020 your most successful year yet. You must have the desire and a compelling reason and passion to achieve whatever it is that you want. It takes courage to say I’m

not going to quit until I’m living the life I dream of, because until you have had the taste of finishing you will not respect yourself. Make peace with your past. Some people are so busy trying to get over their past that they don’t have time to live their future. Remember time has a way of passing very quickly so get your action plan into gear now. Every day God gives you the opportunity of a fresh start with a

clean slate in every area of your life. Open your heart and ask the Holy Spirit to point out areas of your life where He wants to give you a fresh start. In God there are no dead ends only places for new beginnings. We cannot change what happened in the past, but we can determine the quality of our future. We might not like the family into which we were born, but we sure can determine the

kind of home in which we rear our children. I declare something is going to break forth before the end of the year 2019. I believe there’s no way you can go through another year in your life or business empty handed. I believe it is only a matter of time when God is going to open doors that was always there.
