City to install CCTV in latest bid to crush unyielding shootings

LANZO CRUYWAGEN People in Bonteheuwel and neighbouring gang-infested areas say the millions spent by the City of Town on the installation of CCTV should quell the wave of gang violence and arrest of the gunslingers. The outcry comes mostly from infuriated residents especially in Bramble Way where an innocent woman walking to the shop was last week shot and killed by unscrupulous gunmen. In the most recent killing a white man was

fatally wounded and his sprawled body found in the back of a car in Melkbos Street. Their concerns comes in the wake of the city’s announcement that by the end of the current financial year, camera installations in more than 40 wards will have been completed in a bid to keep an eye on crime and other safety and security threats. “We are sick and tired of the killings in our area. I’m too ashamed to tell people where I live and the authorities don’t have a clue how to deal with the ongoing gang-violence in the area.

If CCTV is such an effective tool television network across the why aren’t the gangsters identified metro. and arrested,” angry residents said. WOW Graduation

CAPE FLATS NEWS

Low and behold, we scooped the biggest award for “Senior Community Club” out of 60 WOW clubs in the Western Cape. We received the Golden WOW Award, the WOW Floating Trophy, the Quebeka Bicycle, PLUS R32 500 as a prize from the Department of Community Safety MEC Dan Plato. No words can explain how we felt! We were ecstatic beyond words!! The official Award Ceremony only took place 4th April 2018 and the Bonteheuwel Walking Ladies kindly want to express our humble gratitude to WOW, the Dept. of Safety and Security and the Dept. of Health for Blessing us with such a generous gift.

Two years ago I was approached by Prof Frederick Marais to introduce WOW to us. WOW stands for Western Cape on Wellness and part of Western Cape Department of Health. Some members were sceptical about it, even tried to cause waves among the members not to allow this “WOW people” to come to our club, without knowledge what WOW is all about. This was a typical example of “fearing the unknown”. After our first meeting with Prof Frederick Marais, with him explaining to the members the importance of a healthy lifestyle, eating habits, exercise and play, the “WOW” concept for Bonteheuwel Walking Ladies (BWL) became a new challenge, which was accepted and we were prepared

WHAT DOES SUCCESS MEAN TO YOU? MATTHEW 6:33

Highly successfully people aim to live a life of integrity and credibility. A major key to their success is defined by the difference between character and reputation. Dale said, be more concerned with your character than with your reputation. Your character is what you really are while your reputation is merely what others

think you are. There is a wide gap between success and values today. An ancient proverb states, ‘choose a good reputation over great riches, being held in high esteem is better than silver or gold.’ Ethics and values should be visible because they should be the force behind your success. Unethical behaviour seems to have dominated the news recently. We seem to be confronted with people who appear to be successful but have compromised their values and suffered the consequences. Many of these people represented huge corporations which are nonexistent today. As South Africans

we must play our part to stop the scourge of corruption and revive the values of Ubuntu. We must not lose our sense of moral outrage but to take moral regeneration to the next level. We as religious leaders must do more to instil high moral values in current and future generations. What does success mean to you? Is success the accumulation of material wealth? Or is success measured in your life by the lessons learned on life’s journeys? Remember; there are no short-cuts to success. Success belongs to those who can be taught and are willing to learn. Your values may not be fully understood by others,

but do not compromise them simply to be accepted by the “in crowd”. We are called to stand out and not simply fit in. Value systems raise you above mediocrity and position you for greatness. God Bless. ken.mitchell@telkomsa. net 0641339460

2.1 WATER Seven sets of Water tariffs are proposed (Level 1 to 7 Reduction tariff). The Level 6 reduction tariffs (as reflected in the tables below) will be applicable for the 2018/19 financial year until further decisions regarding the water restrictions are made. In light of the overall reduction of consumption and evaporation of consumption in the upper volumetric steps which are placing the current progressive domestic stepped tariff structure under severe strain and increased risk, the City is recommending alternative methods to ensure much higher levels of certainty and resilience of the financial model to recover the cost for delivering the service. Specific increases to the customer will depend on the specific set of circumstances. Significant tariff increases will however be evident due to the reducing volumetric base, the significant cost required for the water augmentation plans, acceleration of asset management and maintenance programs and adjusting of the water collection ratio. 2.1.1 Domestic Full - Water which is used predominantly for domestic purposes and supplied to single residential properties. 2.2. SANITATION Seven sets of Sanitation tariffs are proposed (Level 1 to 7 Reduction tariff). Significant tariff increases will however be evident due to the reducing volumetric base, the significant cost required for extensions to the Treatment Plants, acceleration of asset management and maintenance programs. 2.2.1 Domestic Full (Standard) – Single residential properties: 70% of water consumption to a maximum of 35kℓ of sewerage per month (70% of 50kℓ of water equals 35kℓ of sewerage). Introduction to Ramadan AS’SAUM – FASTING

To fast during the month of Ramadaan is the fourth Rukun/ principal of the religion of Islam. The Arabic word for fasting is SAUM or SI’YAAM. This form of Ibaadah/worship called Fasting was a devotion that was performed by previous nations/Um’mahs. Allah says in the Quran: O You Who Believe! Fasting Is Prescribed For You As It Was Prescribed To Those Before You. That You May Learn Self-restraint (that You May Ward Off Evil.) Fasting means to abstain from all the MUF’TIRAAT, from day break until the sun has gone down (until the whole disk of the sun has disappeared). The word MUF’TIRAAT are all those acts that invalidates and annuls the

fast. To fast during the month of Ramadaan is incumbent upon every male and female who is; (1) A Muslim. (2) Who is sane. (3) Who has reach the age of puberty. (4) Who is healthy.(5) Who is able to fast. (6) Who is residing (not on a journey) and is the cause of the female she should be free from Haydd and Nifaas. THE NIY’YAH OF FASTING Fasting is not valid unless there was a Niy’yah. This Niy’yah of fasting must be present any time during the night, this means that the person must have the intention during the night to fast the following day, for the Nabi sol lal laahu alayhi wa sal’lam said: “There is no fasting if the person did not make the Niy’yah during the night”, As was explained previously the place of the Niy’yah is in the heart, but it

is Sun’nah to utter the words of fast a Sun’nah fast, his fast will be the Niy’yah. correct as long as the Niy’yah has taken place before Zawaal (before The wording for the Niy’yah the sun has reached it’s zenith, just for the fasting of each day before Thuh’r.) of Ramadaan is as follow: Na’way’tu sau’ma gha’din, THE COMMENCEMENT OF an a’daa’ I far’di ra’ma’daan, THE MONTH OF RAMADAAN haa’thi’his sa’na’ti ee’maa’nan On the twenty ninth day of wah’ti’saa’ban lil’laahi ta’aalaa. LET’S TALK BUSINESS WHO IS GREATER

From my interactions with small businesses, I found that there are mainly two types of business owners. On the one hand, there is the business owner who wishes to remain the greatest figure in the business. One small step towards pulling together There can be no denying our Bonteheuwel community and many neighbourhoods around us are facing serious social disintegration. Whether is due to lack of capacity or lack or resources, is a debatable point. What is clear is a collective effort from all stakeholders, i.e. residents, police, wards councillors, City of Cape Town, government, social services plus religious leaders, are needed urgently. At a community meeting held in February locals express there ‘misnoeë,’ about a range of issues which are causing discomfort amongst the majority of this area. Keen to ensure continuity, the Joint Peace Forum (JPF) took the initiative with other role players and kick start a sports

day full of activities. The first one took place earlier this month what is commonly referred to as the A-block. To everyone one’s surprise the day was a huge success with young people taking part in board games, netball, football, model show with lots of dancing and music. In addition, all the participants were presented with a goodies pack including a sandwich and cooldrinks courtesy of donors/ sponsors. Its envisaged through this intervention, the challenges of social aspects, crime prevention and mobilization is addressed. The next activity/ sports day is scheduled for Pampas Street on Saturday, May 12. (copy submitted)

Shot put have a long standing tradition in the family of Zahid Diedricks. Since switching from sprinting three years, Zahid athletic prowess has flourished. This year he was the sole Bonteheuwel based representative in the Western Province team. He is immensely proud of this achievement given his weight troubles. Now eleven years old, Zahid grew very fast and become

unable to compete competitively in his beloved sprinting races. With the assistance of then school coach Mr Meyer he fell in love with shot put. And since then there has being no looking back. A soft speaking, modest and shy young man, Zahid said, “ I enjoy shot put, it challenges you all the time, you keep on trying to throw further and further, and I like that challenge to throw the

shot put higher and further.” Proud Principal Mrs. Lekay could hardly contain herself as she added Zahid is a role model to his friends and peers. Besides practicing shot put every second day, Zahid also enjoys karate at the Apricot Centre. He credits his mother and grandparents with his accomplishments, who since childhood have encourage and inspire him to rise above

his circumstances. Ask to give a message to learners and other children in this gang infested neighbourhood, Zahid, said,” Finish school, respect your parents and teachers, work hard, don’t do drugs and other naughty stuff, but do map out a future which will see you reach for the stars, and become something in life.”(copy submitted)
