DECEMBER/JANUARY 2016

Council to implement water restrictions The City of Cape Town Council has approved the step up to Level 2 water restrictions in Cape Town, which will be implemented from 1 January 2016.

Children lead Aids campaign

Due to the City’s effective demand strategies, our water supply is more secure than many other metros. However, given that Cape Town is situated in a semiarid area, it is important that we are not complacent. We call on all residents to familiarise themselves with above list and take an active role in ensuring that the restrictions are obeyed. If we all make the required effort, there will be no risk of the taps running dry anytime soon. Customers should note that they will be charged according to a tariff designed to be revenue-neutral when applied to the 10% reduced consumption levels. In other words, if the customer reduces their consumption by 10%, their bill should remain at a similar rand value. Please note that indigent customers’ free allocation will not be affected, nor will the free first 6 kl a month for all residents. Furthermore, residents will have to abide by the following, more stringent (selected)regulations: • No watering (e.g. using buckets) of a garden, sports field, or other grassed area using potable water between 09:00 and 16:00 • Facilities/customers making use of boreholes or other alternative sources are not exempt • No watering (e.g. using buckets) will be permitted within 24 hours of rainfall that provides adequate saturation. • Facilities/customers making use of boreholes or other alternative sources are not exempt

Learners of Silverlea Primary School with parents in the immediate vicinity form a human chain along a stretch of Klipfontein Road corridor to highlight the 16 Days campaign of no violence against women and children abuse plus highlight the on-going threat of Aids, which was commemorated on December 1 worldwide.

DO NOT LET 2015 END UP THE SAME AS 2014 DO NOT LET THE SETBACKS OF THE PAST INFLUENCE OR CLOUD YOUR DREAMS. YOU CANNOT CHANGE THE PAST, BUT YOU CAN DETERMINE THE QUALITY OF YOUR FUTURE

It is hard to believe that the past with all its burdens, sorrows, disappointments, its dark days and difficult hours is almost over for some, and as the past, that were filled with pain and loss draws to a close inevitably one tends to look back and take stock and do introspection. We usually step into the future with mixed feelings and with a certain degree of hesitation and we speculate what the future has in store for us For most it is thank goodness this year is nearly over, I do not want another year like it. We must let go of the past and stretch towards the goal set before us. Phil.3:13 Separation from the past is the price we pay for progress. We must resist the

temptation to become so preoccupied with the realities of the past that our present and future can be consumed and we do not have time to live our future. Failure is no disgrace and it is not the end of your dream. Most successful people are ex failures. In fact your failures are an investment that will equip you to have a strong finish, just acknowledge your weaknesses and spend time to master them. Remember destiny is not for comfort seekers and you cannot fix what’s behind you, let the past pass. Don’t waste your time on revenge or retaliation “success is the best revenge”. We are heading towards an unknown future and despite what we have left behind in the past we

will not be free of troubles and worries. Everyone deserves the life they want. Resolve to be firm on purpose. It is important to know where you want to go in life and how you will know you have arrived. You don’t have to be bound by the barriers of the past. You need to make a decision that you are not going to live an average, mediocre life. Whatever you have achieved so far, is probably only a fraction of what is possible for you. Our quest must be deeper. Remember it’s not God’s lack of resources or lack of talent that prevents you from prospering. The barrier is in your mind. Your own wrong thinking can keep you from God’s best. Friend get rid of small minded thinking, think big, think increase, think abundance and dream big. The ability to

dream is the greatest power on earth because it is the essence of true faith. Dreams provide you with the power to hope beyond the present and to believe in an unseen future. When the dream dies the human spirit dies. 2016 is your time for increase. If you are in agreement with God, 2016 can be the greatest time of your life. Remember: Self-motivation is not something you can obtain from someone else, it is an inner quality, through which you have to determine the direction you want to follow and subsequently motivate yourself to do so. A Blessed, peaceful, restful festive season – Psalm 23:1-6. Ken Mitchell email ken.mitchell@telkomsa.net - Face Book – Kenneth R. Mitchell Foundation. Or cell 0844094538

HIV/Aids testing now at your nearest pharmacy

From left to right: Marina Rifkin (Public Health Specialist from CareWorks), Inge Cunningham (Western Cape Government Health Business Development Unit), Landa Mabenge (Western Cape Government Health Business Development Unit), Minister Nomafrench Mbombo, Sr. Sandra Mabila (Nurse Mentor from CareWorks), and Fayghieyah Brown (Medi-Kem Pharmacy) at the iKapa Cares launch.

Rusana Philander The ‘iKapa Cares’ in partnership with pharmacies in the Western Cape was recently launched. The service will provide HIV counselling testing. This will help people to have more access to these services. “This includes healthcare awareness. The Western Cape Minister of health Dr. Nomafrench Mbombo said that it is an important service because it is a vital part in encouraging people to know their status. These private pharmacies will be branded as ‘iKapa Cares’ outlets and will have trained nurses who will provide this confidential service using quality supplies made available by the department. The test will cost no more than R60. This initiative seeks to reach out to the ordinary person who cannot afford private

healthcare, but is not in a position to take a day off work to access primary services,” she said. Landa Mabenge the Assistant Director of the business development unit for the Western Cape Department of Health said that it was important to extend the services to people. “This service is especially for working people who do not have the time to and sit at a health care facility for a few hours, and lose a day’s salary. We have identified 30 sites where this service will be available, but we will be rolling it out to more pharmacies later. There is a need for this kind of service,” he said. Lizeth Kruger the national clinic manager for Dis-Chem said that it is a great initiative. “This service will be up and running at Blue Route Mall, Noordhoek and Claremont.

Councillor leads Quran 16 Days Campaign Anthony Moses, ward 44 councillor, at the forefront when the 16 Days of Activism campaign was launch earlier this month, says he hopes this year’s extensive programmes will have a lasting effect. “When we look at 16 Days of Activism, it is not just the abuse and the issues around women, but it is also how we take men to a level where they appreciate women from their own perspective, where our communities can feel that they have their sense of belonging where policies are applied, “ said Moses.

NHI to redeem SA health system Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi says the effective implementation of the National Health Insurance (NHI) is key to improving service delivery in the health sector in South Africa. The NHI, a health financing system that is designed to pool funds to provide access to quality, affordable health care, is part of government’s major health sector reforms and is being rolled out over a 14 year period. The NHI will see South Africans accessing health care, based on their health needs, irrespective of their socio-economic status. A: The lid said, “Twist to open.” A blonde walks into a library and asks the librarian, “Can I have a burger and fries?” She replies, “Sorry, this is a library.” The blonde whispers, “Oh, sorry. May I have a burger and fries?” Homeless people here are different. You ever notice that? Our homeless people are serious, man. They have signs that not only say, ‘Will work for food,’ some of them have what they want: ‘Baked potato, salad, shrimp, sweet potato pie, sour chives.’ Q: What did one cannibal say to the other while they were eating a clown? A: “Does this taste funny to you?” Q: What did the blonde say when she saw a box of Cheerios? A: “Wow! Doughnut seeds!”

District Six – Kanala’ will preview from February 2, 2016, and will open officially on February 11. Tickets will be available through the Fugard Theatre’s box office at Computicket.

Administrator of the Year – Abdul Tajoodien (Silver Spurs/ Rygate LFA)

SPORT•

CFNews: Richly - deserved Sedick as I am aware of your contributions, Sedick: Shukran pat, completely out of the blue, at both functions, the other guys had to tell me that’s my name they calling, very proud of these awards, though must say from the start, this is for the children, CFNews: Ok, cool, let’s start, what’s your position at the club and why this desire to help children? Sedick: Chuckling, I have no specific portfolio, as I help everywhere we I can, from secretarial duties, going to LFA meetings, club practices, to acting as the club’s as the club’s PRO, and why, coming from my background where I had limited resources, and now a little better off, I just love to give back to children to assist them to a better future,

SPORT• SPORT•

CFNews: Hanover Park continues to make the headlines for all the wrong reasons, yet your club and you continue to raise the profile of football, Sedick: I can say without hesitation, this year alone has been one of the most difficult ones in relation to all the shootings. I mean we lost a striker due to the shootings, it’s been terrible. Yet, through the grace of the Almighty, we are able to fulfill our fixtures and provide a platform for these youngsters to play the beautiful game of football. Rygate LFA has been surprise with what we have achieved. You know, we don’t send any child away from practices because as a club we committed ourselves to help each and every child, CFNews: You only answer my question in part, how do you manage to hold onto all these young players and what specifically is your involvement? Sedick: Listen, it’s not about me, I enjoy helping these kids, many of them don’t have parents, or maybe single parents, and so they cannot afford the fees plus transport. The club have manage to organise transport every Saturday, manage to get someone to help with tracksuits, so the club’s leadership are quite pro-active and I willingly serve which I thoroughly enjoy,

SPORT• SPORT•

CFNews: What do these awards mean to you personally and how would you use these accolades to motivate others to get involved? Sedick? No doubt it’s a bit overwhelming, though very proud. You know one does not do the work to get these recognition, but when do recognise your contributions, its welcome. For me, I love football, and just wanted the children of Hanover Park to play in a structure league set-up, and luckily Rygate LFA accepted us with open arms, the LFA I must say, have been unbelievable with their support. You know, I believe by starting nurturing these children early, amongst them is a real gem who will eventually run this club. When children sees senior officials getting acknowledgement, it does encourage them to get involve with administration like match cards and so forth. You know, when people gets in contact, they see your determination and passion and then they prepare to get involve, and often that’s how the club succeeds in obtaining assistance from a variety of generous sponsors, a big thank you to them.

SPORT• SPORT•

CFNews: What now for Hanover Rangers, what now for Sedick Abrahams, future goals? Sedick: Keep on with our slogan, ‘Beating the bullet with the Ball! The club will not allow shootings to keep the children away. During the holiday break, the club is taking the children to Harmony Park, on January 2 to Coon Carnival street walk and in-between play tournament football on the fields surrounding Hanover Park. The club is trying to keep them busy otherwise they could be swallow by the ‘wrong people.’ We are going to try and boost our junior numbers as we would like to have more players in each division. This year we struggle with training facilities, but next year, Voorspoed Primary School is finish with renovations, so our practices should be much better in a safer environment. As for me, I will continue to serve my club and my LFA, where I am involve on executive level. CFNews: Thanks/ Shukran for your time and courageous contribution, do continue.

CFNews: Congratulations on your award, though must confess, it’s being a bit of a struggle to get hold of you, Abdul: Yeah, it’s being hectic since the acknowledgement, which came as a huge surprise, plus now my wife is away, so I must cover the house, children and business, but it’s being good, lekker to see you, CFNews: Let’s start at the beginning, how long have you being involved with soccer, and has it always being about football? Abdul: You know I grew up in Silvertown, where I still reside today. There was not much of a choice; I was surrounded by football people. And so I got involve start playing the game and soon I was roped in to help with secretarial duties nogal, and then it just continue in to my senior years, where today, I am the secretary of Sliver Spurs, Manager of the SAB Team, Vice – President at Rygate LFA + secretary of the Johnson Road Facility. CFNews: Jeez, very involve to say the least, how do you manage, how do you manage the pressure and stress? Abdul: I guess it put in my heart in everything I do, I am very particular how things must be done, no short cuts, people have come to appreciate that and work with me. And then of course, my wife plays a huge role in her supportive role, and my brothers and close friends, who are always there, I cannot emphasize that enough, see you at the Ocean Basket, gents, CFNews: Given all of above, what would you say is your greatest strengths and greatest weakness, if any? Abdul: Being myself, so people can see I am here to serve everyone and everything to do with football, I believe I communicate well from what is expected from fellow officials and players, I take decisions collectively and of course in the best interest of the organisation I serve at that time, the second part of your questions is pretty straight forward in that I can’t’ take people tolerate who can’t do their jobs or fail to complete their tasks on time, if one is unable then say so, oh .. Must not forget I enjoy working within a team, CFNews: Going forward, your future plans, message of encouragement to other football administrators? Abdul: I would like to become President of Rygate LFA, and then move onto SAFA CT and then possible serve on SAFA National. I believe both Rygate LFA and the national football association can do so much more. Here at Rygate, the executive needs to entice more of the people around the field to become involve or even wider, plus it must place greater emphasis needs on youth development, ons moet eenvoudig meer jong mense betrokke maak, these days, one’s football club is more than a football club, young players sees you a family member, here at Silver Spurs, we provide opportunities to ±100 kids to participate despite their lack of shortcomings (i.e. fees, clothing, equipment, etc.), but we are committed to give them a chance. CFNews: Message of hope to other football officials? Abdul: Give 110% commitment, remember it’s not easy running a club, if you say you serve voluntary, do exactly that, as people will not see you if you less than 100%, and lastly be open to change and new ideas. CFNews, thank you for your time, and once again, hearty congratulations

Volunteer of the Year – Reginald Jacobs (Bluegum United/ Met LFA)

CFNews: Why are you doing this volunteer work? Reginald: When it comes to volunteering, passion and positivity are the only requirement. One of the better-known benefits of volunteering is the impact on the community, because unpaid volunteers are often the glue that holds that origination or community together. Even helping out with smallest tasks can make a real difference to the lives of people. Dedicating your time increase self-confidence, provide a sense of purpose. CFNews: Do you think you have contributed to the wellbeing of the local football? Reginald: Honestly I would say yes, but it’s not one person who has to contribute to the well-being football with in the area of Bonteheuwel. As an origination we all have to help to create an environment where players and spectators as well as administrators can help to build the brand of soccer. The game of football is bigger than one person, and if you think you can do it all on your own, you will find yourself left behind. CFNews: Which committee or specific projects interests you the most and why? Reginald: Each committee has a function to perform, but for me will always be the constitutional side of the origination. This is what make an origination work, because if we don’t have a constitution with in the origination, people will make and do as they please. CFNews: What you enjoyed most in your volunteer work? Reginald: You can find a new meeting and purpose in your life, opportunity to practice and develop your social skills, exposing you to people with common interest. CFNews: What have you enjoyed the least? Reginald: People who think they know everything in life, and everything is about them, knowingly stepping on a vulnerable person to levitated them self above others. People need to understand that we need each other in life’s journey. Quote (It’s better to be seated at the back, then to be ask to move to the back) CFNews: What kind of people do you work with the best as a co-worker? Reginald: People that are committed and passionate in what they doing, and to see any projector through until the end. CFNews: Which things have you done that has given you the greatest personal satisfaction? Reginald: It’s not what I have done that gives me a personal satisfaction, but the choice in life taken by myself. To help, and share advice, listen and learn never disregard advice given by someone even a child. Some people may rejoice in achievements, yet they lack in the knowledge of life’s lessons. It’s better to not be boastful of yourself, but rather be humble in the eyes of the Almighty. CFNews: What do you think is needed to recruit more volunteers? Reginald: Firstly you must have the passion to serve your fellow men or woman. It must be how much I will get out of it myself. In today’s age it is not everyone who wants to volunteer their time and resources. You have to acknowledge that compensation plays a big role in society today. But it’s the leaders of originations out there who need to make it attractive to people to give some of their time and effort. Some time it is also that you need to approach people who was part of a sport (like soccer) take the brothers Chris, Augie, Edmund, Mr. Frankie Manuel, Mr. Abie Jacobs, Mr. J Visagie, Mr. Erickson, Isaac Corneluis, Lindsay Davids, Kenneth Merdith, Wayne Weitz, Harry Wyngaardt, Dawood Davids to mention a few of them and many more others who serve the association. These are people who played soccer, and when it was that they have played their last game, never turn their back on the game, also become volunteer to serve the game which they enjoy in the junior and senior years without payment. CFNews: Are you back next year to serve the football community? Reginald: Firstly I call myself a resident of Bonteheuwel, that’s who I am (and not a former resident who don’t reside in the area). As a footballer and administrator, there is nothing that will keep me away from soccer in Bonteheuwel. This is where I have grown up, learnt to play the beautiful game as a junior and senior. Until the Almighty have not call me home I will serve the community of bonteheuwel. Thanking you Uncle Pat

Kaizer Chiefs visiting the Cape of Love & Peace

Time is ticking closer to the big showdown between the reigning Absa Premiership champions Amakhosi and the current log leaders, the Clever Boys. In years gone by, clashes between these two traditional foes raised eyebrows and drew attention from both set of supporters, including the neutrals. This time around though, there is some extra spice in the fixture.

It will be the first time Kaizer Chiefs uses a Cape Town venue as the alternative home ground. Amakhosi host Bidvest Wits on Saturday, 19 December, at the Cape Town Stadium (kick-off is at 18:00). Dubbed the Cape of Love & Peace, Chiefs will play a total of three Absa Premiership home fixtures at the Cape Town Stadium. Following the Wits encounter, Amakhosi will welcome Platinum Stars (24 January, 15:30 kick-off) and SuperSport United (20 February, 20:15 kick-off). Speaking ahead of the Cape of Love & Peace visit, Marketing Director Jessica Motaung enthuses, “We are geared up for Cape Town. This is history in the making and that’s why we are pulling all stops to make it memorable for our supporters.” Several activities will be organised in the buildup to the Wits encounter. “We have planned a number of events,” confirms the ever lively Motaung. “These include Roadshows where management and selected players will get up close and personal with our supporters. We have added soccer clinics, which are part of our Corporate Social Responsibility programme. The clinics will be conducted by some of our top players.” Tickets for the three Cape of Love & Peace matches are already available at Computicket and Shoprite/ Checkers outlets nationwide at a cost of R60.

The Springbok Sevens team on Sunday was crowned first winners of the inaugural HSBC Cape Town Sevens after a solid 29-14 win over Argentina in a pulsating final that brought down the curtain on a fantastic first tournament in South Africa’s Mother City. The

likes of Rosko Specman, Cheslin Kolbe (pic) and Seabelo Senatla proved too fast for the determined and dogged Argentinian defence. No one created more havoc though than Justin Geduld, who was deservedly named HSBC Player of the Final. Brown, captain of the

Springbok Sevens team, thanked the crowd for their support over the last two days. “The way the anthem was sung and the noise they made when we had our first line-break was just incredible. That really lifted us,” Brown said.
