Gang infested areas on knife edge LANZO CRUYWAGEN

Residents beware gangsters armed with high calibre rifles is set to turn streets in gang-infested areas into killing streets as the drug turf war and the fight take control of the underworld is set to intensify. This after police in its most recent operation carried out over the weekend in Hanover Park, arrested two suspects for the illegal possession of a firearm and a large quantity of different calibre ammunition buried in a backyard. The arms cache discovered could have further fuelled the already deadly war between rival gangs in the area. Police spokesperson Capt. FC van Wyk says members of SAPS attached to the K9 unit, stabilization unit and Metro Police were busy in a joint prevention patrols in Lonedown Walk when they stopped and searched an 18-year-old male. He was arrested for the possession of new live 9mm ammunition. However, police received a valuable tip

about a large arms cache. “Members swiftly acted on information proceeded to a house in the same road where they searched a wendy house on the premises and seized a large quantity of drugs. A .38 special Taurus revolver and under the ground seized fully loaded R5 magazines and a large quantity of live shotgun ammunition, 7.65 ammunition, .45mm ammunition, 9 magazines and large ammunition,” Van Wyk said. A 42-year-old male was apprehended for the illegal possession of a firearm, ammunition and drugs.

Meanwhile sources close to the war for supremacy in the underworld set this is tip of the iceberg and every ganginfested area is flooded with heavily calibre guns to take gang leaders. Source close to the underworld said: “The underworld is in turmoil and a new kid on the block along with his allies has already made their move and several top gang leaders have been taken out. MATRICS: TIME FOR LASER FOCUS AS Holiday programme brings fun and leisure FINAL STRETCH LOOMS As the Class of 2017 return to their desks for arguably the most important few months of their school careers, it is time for them to eliminate all distractions, and budget their time to ensure they stay in control of their revision and ultimate success, an education expert says.

“In the same way that the proverbial penny saved is considered a penny earned, so time saved and invested in what really matters now can be considered an investment in the matriculant’s future success,” says Nola Payne, Head of Faculty: Information and Communications Technology at The Independent Institute of Education, SA’s largest private higher education provider.

MEC Schäfer pleased with communities who actively looked after schools during school holidays which helped reduced burglary and vandalism At the start of every school term, one of the main concerns is when teachers and learners arriving back to find a school which has been badly vandalised or burgled during the winter school holidays. The department is therefore pleased to announce the number of incidents reported is 15 incidents down from 21 over the same period in 2016. One case was classified as major and fourteen cases were classified as minor. This suggests local communities are actively looking after schools, in addition to Western Cape Education Department (WCED) security measures. The WCED have found the safest schools are those where local citizens help to look after

the properties. We need communities to be vigilant regarding activities around schools and report any suspicious behaviour to SAPS as soon as possible. Furthermore, the WCED also need their assistance in identifying or reporting perpetrators who often are from within the community. Unfortunately, despite measures taken by the WCED, as well as school communities, some schools still fall victim to vandalism and burglaries during the school holiday. The department and schools could better spend these funds on improving the quality of education in schools. At the end of the day, vandalism represents theft from our learners. (Copy WCED)

Webber Wentzel gives back on Mandela Day Pleasant surprise

for winner

To commemorate Nelson Mandela’s 67 years of public service, the team from Webber Wentzel Attorneys’ Cape Town office, gave back more than 67 minutes to those less fortunate. At Garden Cottage, a home for eight women with intellectual disability under the auspices of Cape Mental Health, the team of 20 employees left their business suits and high heels behind to don protective white suits and turn themselves into painters, sanders, handymen, decorators and all-round good guys at the Heideveld-property on 18 July. This is not a once-off event, though, according to Vusi Njozela, the marketing and events coordinator for the firm’s Cape Town office. They will be taking Garden Cottage under their wing in the near future. This first round of improvements and repair work focussed

on the rooms in the house. All rooms, the doors and cupboards got a fresh coat of paint. Outside the window frames and security gates were also repainted. The team will be returning later in the month to complete the work, to hang new curtains and fit curtain rails as well as revamping the entertainment area. When the eight residents came home just after lunch, the air was filled with excitement and anticipation. The Webber Wentzel staff took some time to get to know the women who brimmed with appreciation. These 67 minutes and more from the Webber Wentzel team will have a lasting impact and leave a lasting impression just as Madiba himself would have wanted us to do. (copy submitted)

67 Minutes not enough! Enthusiastic members of Bluegum Seniors like to be different. This year for Mandela day they decided to knit and assemble a variety of blankets and clothing. However, they felt 67 minutes is too little. Four organisations were identified as beneficiaries and each were allocated 67 dedicated minutes. Furthermore, members were challenge during these 67 minutes to see how many items they could finish within the time of 67 minutes. Of course this generated a lot of fun and laughter amongst members not to mention a competitive edge to the operations.

LET’S TALK BUSINESS

STRATEGY

Update on the 10111 dilemma

with Heinrich Jemane

Small business owners will admit that starting a small business is easier than running it sustainably over a long period of time. According to a study by The Department of Trade and Industry, South Africa has one of the highest failure rates of new SMEs in the world, at an estimated 75%. This is very worrying.

GOAL (where the business wants to be) and OBJECTIVES (what needs to be done to reach the set goal).

How can you ensure that your SME survives its infancy and succeeds over the long term? By starting with the end in mind. Without an end goal and a strategy on how to get there, the road may become tougher than it should be. A good business strategy basically has a

OBJECTIVE 1A: Employ young, vibrant, qualified, intelligent staff who have the potential to become the future leaders of the business;

Here are just a few examples of goals and objectives:GOAL 1: To ensure the sustainability of the business over a long period of time.

OBJECTIVE 1B: Consistently maintain an excellent service level, continuous training and a high level of

professionalism; and OBJECTIVE 1C: Join relevant business networking groups GOAL 2: Expand the business throughout the province OBJECTIVE 2A: Actively identify and research potential markets within the province; OBJECTIVE 2B: Visit target areas and do decent research on the market and opportunities that may exist; and OBJECTIVE 2B: Pursue government tenders in other parts of the province.

S i m i l a r l y, each business owner should determine goals and objectives unique to his or her own business circumstances. Write these down and diligently review them at least once a year. We remain committed and adamant to advancing labour peace and unity, hence our position remains that it cannot be appropriate to condone unnecessary unpaid leave to our members, which is prematurely caused by the need for Vavi’s project to be seen as ‘radical’ at the expense of the members who have intentionally being misled by those who seek to exploit their genuine frustrations. It was a double celebration at Flamingo Seniors Club as Ruth Joubert, seated front middle, celebrated her 82nd birthday on Mandela Day. She says is overwhelmed her birthday coincides with the late great Nelson Mandela. As if that was enough,

POPCRU has never been arrogant about its overwhelming domination within the criminal justice cluster, but notes the inflation of numbers ˈthese peopleˈ continue to mislead the public on. There are less than 1000 workers at the 10111 centres, yet it is being falsely purported as 5000 members who are on strike. This is another form of propaganda to create an impression that they (other unions) have a growing support in their premature, uncalculated decisions that are placing workers into distress over matters that are resolvable through negotiation, typical of and consistent with their master’s widely known premature activities.

“Where Community Sport Prospers”

Coke Cup magic evident

The latest round of Safa Cape Town most prestigious knockout competition the Coke Cup, again live up to its name with some magical moments both and off the field. On the field high riding Jamestown come crashing down against D&G Orient, who on this display are serious contenders to go all the way to the final. Not far behind is evergreen Bluegum United. Blessed with an abundance of talent there is no reason why this club can’t make at least the

latter rounds. Another dark horse is Durbanville FC who cantered to an easy win over a disappointing Melchester Rovers. From all accounts activities off the field across football districts, peace and harmony dominated the streets without any major incidents as neighbourhoods of the Cape Flats come to a standstill to appreciate and watch their beloved clubs compete for community bragging rights. Strand too strong for Hamediehs

Strand United put in a solid performance against Hamediehs in a Super league C division rugby game played at Vygieskraal on Saturday. United won 33-16 in a game which kept the spectators on their edges of their seats. Both clubs are languishing at the bottom half of the log standings before the start of the game. With nothing to lose both teams threw the ball around in the dead rubber with United drawing first blood through a converted try by Ridhah Fanie. Hammies replied Shadley Bonza of Strand United slips out of a tackle from Hamediehs full back (no 15) Ganief with two penalties by Berdien whilst Hassiem Kariem are left clutching straws and gets to smell sand. and a try by Saaid Gamiet which kept them in the game during the first quarter. The heavier forwards of Hamediehs were a handful at the break downs with Sharief Bloys leading the way, however Strand’s defense were solid throughout the game. Individual try scoring efforts by Shadley Bonza and Abdul Aziz Temoor for United saw them leading 21-11 at half time. Temoor had a blinder in midfield breaking the defensive lines of his opponents on a regular basis. His ability to put his speedy wing backs into space with his elusive running was the highlight of the game. The second half started on a good note for the home team with Yusuf Daniels crossing the whitewash but United dashed their hopes of a comeback with a try by Shadley Bonza in the 55th minute which completed his brace. The visitors

profited from their six try victory by collecting a bonus point for scoring four tries which propelled them to eight position on the league table. The current form of Hamediehs is a far cry of last season’s which saw them compete for league honours. The defeat pushes them into the relegation zone with only two wins from nine games. Yusuf “Bolla” Mohamed and Sharief Bloys delivered outstanding performances with ball in hand and could be key in their fight for survival to stay in the league. Despite the defeat chairperson of the club Zughdi van der Schyff remained positive, saying, “we gave away soft tries and kicked aimlessly. It is back to the drawing board for us as every game becomes a must win” he said. Their next fixture is against Busy Bees at Langa stadium on Saturday.”
