YOUNG SOUTH AFRICANS GIVE YOUR DREAMS AND HOPE A NEW AND FRESH BEGINNING The month of June we celebrate and paying homage to the Youth of 1976 remembering the school pupils who lost their lives during the uprising in Soweto which was a game changer in South African politics, but it is rather very disappointing that the Country has not given the Youth of 1976 the credit
they deserve. No wonder many of our youth ask, what is there to celebrate? We have freedom and democracy but unfortunately the youth feel the politicians have betrayed them with their inability to provide access to affordable quality education and employment opportunities. But as bizarre as it may sound, it is not all doom and gloom. Amid the depressing statistics there are many inspiring young South Africans who refuse to become victims of a crippled economy. Their determination to shape
their own destiny is something to be admired. Remain positive about your future. Those who tell you something is impossible, your response should be “WATCH ME”. With such determination you are destined to be one of the world’s movers and shakers. Stop being your own worst enemy. Maybe you made so many starts in life and it seems your dreams have died remember God can resurrect your dead dreams and give you brand new ones. God’s love for you is guaranteed. LET’S TALK BUSINESS COLLABORATION
I remember a time when a small businesses owner would set up his shop in a certain side of the suburb and operate the business from there over a long period of time. He would be loved by the community. When he needed help his spouse or older child would stand in. He would be content and for years and years he would be in the same place selling the same goods to the same customers. There was probably nothing wrong with that business. What has changed, though, is the behaviour of the customer. The more convenience the

Sozo Foundation gives hope to Cape Flats youth A guiding hand, the chance to learn a skill and be exposed to the workplace is transforming the lives of vulnerable youngsters in the Western Cape. In 2010, husband and wife team Anton and Elana Cuyler traded in their jobs in England and moved to Cape Town to volunteer as youth workers at the Bay Community Church in Vrygrond – an area characterized by terrible living conditions, abuse, gangsterism and violence. “We were moved by what we saw and decided to try and play a role in transforming the community,” said Anton. This was the start of the Sozo Foundation, a non-profit organisation that today offers educational support, skills development, life skills training, nutrition and other services to thousands of children and youth in Vrygrond. The centre of the foundation’s skills development initiatives is the Sozo Youth Café, where students are taught everything from graphic design, to hair and beauty, coffee-brewing, artisan skills and computer training. In 2018, 751 youth between the ages of 16 and 26 were trained at the Youth Café. Of the students who graduated, 83 percent were placed in employment, entrepreneurship or educational opportunities. After graduating from matric in 2016, Garrison Kivido was part of the first intake of Youth Café students in 2017. After going through the one-month life skills training programme at the café, he chose to continue on to the graphic design skills training programme. “It was an enriching experience to meet people from different backgrounds and to learn about other students’ dreams and how we all had different talents and abilities,” said Garrison. During the programme, Garrison discovered a passion for camera work and video editing, which was encouraged by his Youth Café mentor. When he graduated, he was immediately offered an internship at Media Village – a media production company in Muizenberg. (copy submitted)

Alderman Twigg joined the Executive Mayor Dan Plato, Alderman JP Smith, Ward Councillor Ayesha Abrahams and Sub council Chairperson Courtney Van Wyk at Bishop Lavis High School Grounds for the youth day event. The event is one of a series which will raise awareness on the Bishop Lavis development and the importance of following a healthy lifestyle for the whole family. It is also an opportunity to promote positive extra mural activities for young people to rather follow positive and healthy activities, rather than falling into unhealthy and destructive habits and behaviour (including gang activities etc) (Staff reporter)
