Community healthcare workers want to be public servants “They take care of the frail, the sick within our communities; they bath them and make sure they have access to their medication”

HealthcareWorkersmarch.jpg: About 80 community healthcare workers marched from Keizersgracht to the provincial legislature on Thursday demanding to be integrated to the public service by the Department of Health. (Photo: Thembela Ntongana) Thembela Ntongana About 80 community healthcare workers marched to the provincial legislature on Thursday, 22 March 2018, demanding to be integrated as public servants in the Department of Health. Represented by the National Union of Public Service and Allied Workers union (NUPSAW), they marched and sang: “How are we supposed to work in these conditions?”

Community healthcare workers are primarily responsible for home visits to make sure that vulnerable people are getting adequate care and do not fall through the cracks in the state’s health system. The workers are currently paid stipends by the Department of Health (sometimes via NGOs). In a memorandum, the workers demanded integration as public servants at salary level 3 with all the normal conditions of employment. They want danger allowances, R250 a month for

airtime, and transport to health facilities and home visits. They have also asked for the department to provide accredited training in order for them to be registered with the South African Nursing Council.

communities; they bath them and make sure they have access to their medication … Yet the government doesn’t recognise them as public servants,” he said. “These workers are working under difficult conditions; they are subjected to harassment by criminal elements in our communities, and yet they do not have the protection under the occupational health and safety act,” said Parker.

NUPSAW provincial organizer Omar Parker said the workers were “vulnerable”, delivered an important service in terms of primary healthcare, and formed an important component within The campaign to have the workers the health sector. “They take care recognised as public servants of the frail, the sick within our started two years ago. He said last

year the Department of Health had agreed to a policy framework for the implementation to integrate the workers in April. “But now, to our dismay the government has come back to us to say that they do not have the necessary funding and that there are financial constraints and [they] cannot afford to honour the agreement to integrate the workers … We say this is an insult,” said Parker.

Parents urge to participate Aitsa, kyk wie het 60 geword? in SGB elections

LANZO CRUYWAGEN

With School Governing Bodies (SBG) elections taking place across the country it is imperative that all stakeholders ensure a thorough handover process, says Education MEC Debbie Schäfer. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has issued a circular with detailed guidelines for the handover process from the outgoing to the newly elected governing body. Governing bodies represents all sectors of the school community, including parents, teachers, nonteaching staff and pupils in Grade 8 to 12. Highlighting its importance, Schäfer said: “We have many examples of outstanding governing bodies that have contributed significantly to improving the quality of education at their schools through their good governance. “The new governing bodies will learn from their experience. Integral to this is a full and thorough handover process.” Schäfer emphasized the principal of a school is the official representative of the head of the WCED while serving on the governing body. He is she is therefore obliged to ensure that there are adequate administrative measures in place aimed at sustaining the administrative and records management processes. “The principal must facilitate the

handover process which must take place within 14 days of the first meeting of the new governing body. The principal must conduct the handover process by officially providing all relevant governance files, including the governing body constitution, policies and procedures, to the new governing body. “The principal must, in the same meeting, conduct an induction session for the new members and answer any questions that the new governing body may have,” she said. A handover certificate, signed by both the incoming and outgoing chairperson, will be completed and kept safely at the school. After completion of the entire process the WCED will provide governing bodies with comprehensive training and support by officials specializing in school management and governance. “The department provided every principal with a comprehensive training manual that covers all aspects of the elections, from the legislative framework to compiling voters’ rolls, election processes and managing disputes. “I wish schools all the best as they conduct the election process and I look forward to working with our new governing bodies as we continue to strive for well-managed schools that provide quality education for all our children,” Schäfer concluded.

SASSA and Post Office ready for 1 April It’s all systems go for grant recipients with payments on track

Freedom

Freedom is a biblical concept introduced by God Himself as the very essence of our existence and our most cherished value. Freedom is discovering and embracing your true self and becoming all you were born to be. Freedom requires humanity, tolerance, sacrifice and self-imposed discipline. To control a man, a community or a nation one must control the information content that enters the subconscious mind. (John 8:32, 36) Remember that the power of the oppressor is the maintenance of ignorance. The oppressor derives

his sense of superiority from the maintenance of the inferiority of the oppressed. Remember both the oppressed and the oppressor need deliverance before true freedom can be embraced and experienced. All humans possess the same passion and desire for freedom which is inherent in the human spirit and is critical to his sense of value. Freedom is God’s delegated right for every man to dominate, govern and rule the earth and not the domination of another human being. This is why any form of slavery is ultimately sin against the human spirit. The nature and goal of the oppressor is to achieve complete control

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and the South African Post Office (SAPO) are ready to pay social grants to beneficiaries from 1 April without interruptions. SASSA and SAPO signed a service agreement in December last year as a partnership to ensure the smooth payment of social grants. The pilot projects have successfully been implemented since January this year when beneficiaries who receive grants via commercial banks, including Postbank, had money paid directly into their accounts. This year he was the sole Bonteheuwel based representative in the Western Province team. He is immensely proud of this achievement given his weight troubles. Now eleven years old, Zahid grew very fast and become

unable to compete competitively in his beloved sprinting races. With the assistance of then school coach Mr Meyer he fell in love with shot put. And since then there has being no looking back. A soft speaking, modest and shy young man, Zahid said, “ I enjoy shot put, it challenges you all the time, you keep on trying to throw further and further, and I like that challenge to throw the

shot put higher and further.” Proud Principal Mrs. Lekay could hardly contain herself as she added Zahid is a role model to his friends and peers. Besides practicing shot put every second day, Zahid also enjoys karate at the Apricot Centre. He credits his mother and grandparents with his accomplishments, who since childhood have encourage and inspire him to rise above

his circumstances. Ask to give a message to learners and other children in this gang infested neighbourhood, Zahid, said,” Finish school, respect your parents and teachers, work hard, don’t do drugs and other naughty stuff, but do map out a future which will see you reach for the stars, and become something in life.”(copy submitted)
