A Youth Day Worth Remembering

JUNE/JULY 2016

Documentary fitting tribute to Kriel

It took a documentary Action Kommandant: The Untold Story of the Revolutionary Freedom Fighter Ashley Kriel, to get people to commemorate a National Public holiday in this instance Youth Day, in an aptly fashion. The documentary completed by Nadine Cloete, tells Ashley’s story in a series of intimate interviews with those closest to him. The free screening took place on Youth Day at the Bonteheuwel Civic Centre and was jam-packed with people from all walks of life including people from beyond the area. The much maligned Joint Peace Forum (JPF) coordinated most of the arrangements ably supported by community organisations. Speaking at the screening, Ashley’s sister, Melanie, said, “It’s a bitter-sweet. He should have been here to see the democracy he fought for, and the large crowd is testament to one of his favourite slogans of ‘No Surrender’ until freedom is obtain.’’ Bonteheuwel High School use the occasion to announce their plans to start the Ashley Kriel Skills Development Centre sometime in July next year. Hip Hop artist Emile XYZ master of ceremonies

A poem was recited couple with an inspirational speech delivered by champion athlete Aneesah Haupt. With Bonteheuwel and neighbouring areas choked by gangster warfare, the event was use to showcase the positives together with the immense role young people play. The last words belong to current JPF chairperson Judy Kennedy, who said, “Bonteheuwel is a community plagued by social ills, including prostitution, drug abuse and teenager pregnancy, yet if view today, the contrast is immense with so much talent here, it is this story people need to tell, which will help transform the community as the greatest challenge of the day is- how to bring about a revolution of the heart, a revolution which has to start with each one of us.” (special correspondent)

Final goodbyes after 31 years “Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would last this long at one school,” said a teary-eyed Maves Hungary, who bid farewell after 31 years as school secretary of Central Park Primary School. Interestingly, she keeps

A great tree has fallen workers went on strike, Geraldine was one of the core organisers, keeping workers together and helping organise the boycott. She emerged as a strong worker leader during the strike and the subsequent boycott. She also met and was influenced by many of the young Bonteheuwel youth activists who supported the Grand Bazaars workers during their strike.

Geraldine Kennedy – early political history Geraldine grew up in Bonteheuwel and as a teenager and found work in the nearby industrial area, Epping – at the Grand Bazaars Warehouse. In 1983 she formed part of group of progressive union organisers and workers, who left NUDW (a union exclusively for white and coloured workers) to form a new non-racial union RAWU. Geraldine was 17 or 18 years old at the time – quick thinking, dynamic and able to mobilise fellow workers to take the risks associated with joining a nonracial union in the 80s. When the

Geraldine was elected onto the first RAWU executive at the RAWU AGM which took place during the strike in 1994. Geraldine was blossoming into a powerful union leader at this time. Following the Grand Bazaars strike, Geraldine joined RAWU as a full time organiser. As an organiser she brought energy and passion to her work; she travelled to Bloemfontein and Kimberly, to assist in the organisation of workers in those Cities. During her time with RAWU she had matured into fully fledged unionist and activist. She was one of the many who contributed to the democratisation of South Africa. Her passion and commitment to the struggle of the working class did not diminish over the years; she died while working for COSATU. She is a loss to the workers movement, her family and her comrades. Dear Gerri

I would like to thank the City of Cape Town for erecting that ugly pole in front of my dad’s house. If it wasn’t for that pole, our paths would never have crossed and we would never have met. The pole was later removed but our friendship continued to grow. LET’S TALK BUSINESS CASH FLOW IS KING If I could put a group of small business owners into a room, I would measure how long it takes before someone raised the topic of his or her cash flow challenges. I’m sure the timer would keep running on that topic. Entrepreneurs and especially small business owners do not like talking about their cash flow challenges. The truth is, many businesses out there are in the same boat. So how can the cash flow of a small business be improved? •Based on the nature of the business, start from home if possible. Renting a premises can be tough on cash flow because whether one hundred clients walk through the door or only

one, the rental amount remains the same. •If renting premises, consider sharing the space with a business offering an ancillary product or service. •If selling a product, work strictly cash on delivery. Getting paid at time of order may be unlikely, but would certainly be first prize. •If rendering a service which could take several days or weeks to complete, take a deposit upfront, with the balance payable at completion. •Build good relationships with creditors and negotiate longer payment terms. Honour these terms because it may count favourably for future negotiations.

This follows after police arrested a well-known lawyer from Peerless Park in Kraaifontein for the possession of dagga. “We received information about drugs being sold from a house in Camelia street in Bonteheuwel and followed up by searching the house”, Louw says. Elections August 3 Public Holiday Democratizing development, empowering and redistributing “Ballroom dancing is fun, magical and lifechanging! When I first started learning ballroom dancing, I fumbled around awkwardly and sometimes painfully, figuring things out as I went along. Certain things weren’t explained or just never came up in conversation,” said maestro Melvin, chief dance maestro of Melvin’s Dance Studio. The Melvin’s Dance Studio in Bonteheuwel has been going for over twenty years and has produced several champions in the various categories. Sadly the numbers have dwindled due to social

challenges which have seen membership numbers dwindled. Animated and passionate as ever, founder Melvin, refuse to give up. “Dancing has been good for me, some of my former learners have experience it themselves and currently there are a few who make cut it to the top. Lots of hard work, but ultimately if gives them an opportunity to travel and of course lead to a better life. That’s really what drives me, to keep the children busy with dancing or anything else, just stay away from the wrong crowd.” At the moment classes are

Thursdays at the Bonteheuwel Civic Centre from 4 to 6pm. The dancers are hard at work preparing for the SA Nationals to be held later in the year at Sun City. Although the dance studio have regular functions to generate funds, it’s not nearly enough to cover all there operational expenses, including rental fees. The broader community is urged to donate generously to keep the dance studio’s flag going. Contact Melvin @ 076 1366 294 to offer your support.

Scouts launch offers lively alternative

Democracy in South Africa is about more than just voting. It is about people having the right to be informed about what their government is doing, and having the right to participate in decision-making, especially when the decisions directly affect them. This helps create empowered citizens who have the initiative to continue to contribute to the development of their communities. Councillors (especially ward councillors) play an extremely important role in promoting democracy by making sure that community members and organisations have the chance to present their views on any matter to be considered by council. Councillors must also be diligent in reporting to their constituencies about what council has committed to and what progress is being made. Report backs should be regular! (copy submitted)

Tips to Home Selling in Winter Winter presents its own unique set of challenges. It is not the ideal time to put your home on the market if you live where it gets cold and rains or snows, primarily because your home won’t show as well. However, there are steps you can take to brighten your home and make the showing pleasant and enjoyable for your buyers. •Clear a Path - If it’s raining, put a rubber mat by the front door or a container to hold wet umbrellas and shoes. •Let in the Light - Turn on every light in the house, including appliance lights and closet lights. •Turn on the Heat - You want the temperature inside to be comfortable and to give the buyer more of a reason to linger, especially on a cold day. •Create a Mood - Make your living room appear romantic by placing two champagne glasses near a champagne bucket on the coffee table. Keen on providing an alternative to young people who are caught daily in crossfire and or the lure of gangsterism, the 3rd Third Bonteheuwel Scouts was revived.
