IT IS TIME FOR STUDENTS TO BEGIN THINKING SERIOUSLY ABOUT THEIR FUTURE – WITHOUT PREPARATION THERE’S NO CELEBRATION. IT IS PREPARE OR REPAIR – PSALM 32:8 & PROVERBS 16:3 I am sure as citizens of this beautiful country, we are deeply disturbed and at the high levels of corruption in Government circles, irresponsible, clueless, unethical and discredited leaders and still at the helm of things. Our young people and children are exposed to the stark ruthlessness of gangsters and the inability of our government to maintain law and order is also of deep concern. Yes, we have made profound gains in the last 21 years but racism has raised once again its ugly head and as long as we allow this inhuman treatment to be inflicted on our

people, our gains and our freedom we have achieved no doubt is under threat . As citizens of South Africa we must support, prepare and invest in our youth towards their future to become dedicated citizens of success. As young people we need to confront our giants headon and continue the struggle not with bullets or burn down institutions of learning but by empowering our minds with higher education and commit to never ending learning to realize our goal of equality. I want to encourage our young people to stay away from drugs and alcohol or else your mind and body will not be free. Remain health conscious, exercise selfcontrol and nurture your spiritual life. Surround yourself with effective role models to help

you develop strength of character. Do not quit school but take advantage of the opportunities a good education can provide. Remember higher education is one of the most effective interventions to take you out of poverty and increase your earning capacity. A lack of quality education will remain an impediment to job opportunities and economic freedom. In order to address personal poverty we need to get rid of an impoverish mind-set. Success belongs to those who can be taught and are willing to learn. Failure is no disgrace. Learn to fail fast and fail forward. Failure is the back door to success. Do not allow your mistakes to slow down your progress or to abandon your dream and passion for living. Free yourself

Hazendal Residents of the Hazendal housing project have established a community organisation, the New Era Community Organisation (NECO), to address challenges in their area as a collective, as they believe this will make their voices stronger. The latest issue was a blocked sewer, which they claim the City took three weeks to repair. Mayoral committee member for utility services Ernst Sonnenberg apologized, saying the fault had not been immediately attended to because of “administrative error.” According to NECO spokesperson, Alfonzo Kayser, there are a number of niggling issues outstanding, though it appears the City is not keen to work with them. Soraya Salie I feel humbly honoured being nominated as member of the Heavenly Culture Peace Advocacy Committee. My mission is to advocate Peace and encourage our community and all citizens to plant a seed of Peace, as it is the responsibility if every individual to promote Peace. I’ve learned from the Peace Summit that irrespective our race, creed, culture or religion, we are all created by The same Creator, The One in Control of Heavenly Powers. I had my first radio interview and will be having a press conference this week. It’s important to make use of all our community new papers as well as social media. My intention is to meet with all religious leaders, school principals, organisations and sport fraternities within our community. I believe that via the nurturing and compassionate hearts of mothers, that Peace can and will be achieved! Our main focus will be to promote the D.P.C.W document (Declaration of PEACE and Cessation of War), which we would like to hand over to the UN, and trust that the will

endorse and legislate it, whereby it will make all Wars illegal. We also plan to invite more community members to engage in peace talks and peace walks and to stress that we are all Peace Ambassadors, and need to nurture the seed of PEACE within our inner-being, so that we can spread PEACE throughout the World. A beautiful reminder to me first and then to everyone else is that we need to have inner peace first, before we can give off peace. We need to rid of the evil we hold within ourselves, such as jealousy, enmity, grudges animosity....etc. We must learn to forgive and forget, so that we can have more space from within to store Peace. I trust that by working together, our mission will soon be accomplished by the Will and Grace of GOD. I want to encourage every sister, mother and daughter to join the International Women’s Peace Group (IWPG), as Women hold the Power to bring about change. “Change starts with me, so be the change.” She can, she can... Samsung Provides Technology Boost to Ambitious School

Enriching lives through technology In keeping with Samsung’s aim to enrich lives through technology, the Masibambisane High School (MHS) in Delft, Cape Town has become the stage for an ambitious project intended to uplift the prospects of its scholars. Unfortunately, neither Masibambisane High School nor the township in which it is located have been able to fully benefit from living in a digital age and instead have to contend with serious challenges. While the school itself lacks resources with which to uplift the standard of learners’ performance and enhance the quality of teaching, the Delft region is also beset by a lack of jobs and opportunities. These factors prompted Samsung to choose the school as a deserving and relevant school for the SEVP. Despite the difficulties with which it has to contend, the school still strives to offer academic excellence to its 1 256 students. “We are grateful to have Samsung involved, as this project will assist us in enabling appropriate learning within this generation where technology is so prevalent,” explains Mr Boesman, the principal of Masibambisane High School. “While we are the only educational facility in this area which focuses on science, maths and technology, it is difficult for us to acquire the equipment needed, and thus we have limited resources to

empower our learners with technological and scientific skills. This project will improve our learners’ performance and is going to make teaching much more effective and efficient,” he continues. Running from the 26th of August until the 3rd of September 2016, the programme is set to see 30 volunteers coming from Samsung South Korea, who will provide lessons in certain computer applications that are widely used and often critical in most modern businesses, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop. Additionally, students will be able to see e-commerce in action and experience first-hand how an online shopping portal can be established using wimix.com. The Samsung Employees Volunteering Programme will go a step further, enabling students to not only see the Inner workings of a smartphone, but also how these are repaired. Considering the proliferation of smartphones across the continent and the world at large, technical expertise in how to fix a damaged or broken phone is certain to remain an in-demand skill for the foreseeable future. It may also hold the key to enabling students to bridge from their school studies to gainful employment. While Masibambisane High School will undoubtedly benefit in the short term, the initiative is also intended as a pilot project, with its success serving as the basis for similar initiatives being launched in other areas. CAPE FLATS NEWS

It’s that time of the year again: Exams!

Exams are few teenagers’ idea of fun. But opting to party instead of studying can mean you do not go as far in life as you should. These days few people can get well-paid jobs with a matric certificate. And to get into colleges and universities nowadays, you need very good high school marks. That means putting in a few solid hours of study time every day. Cape Flats News spoke to Modderdam High School learners about their study habits and preparations for the upcoming final exams.

Nadine Sebo, “I start by laying out all my notes of the particular subject and then begin. This is something I have been doing since the beginning of the year. Also what helps is plenty of reading.”

Thaakirah Hendricks, “about a week before the final exam schedule, I design a timetable to prepare and then I stick to it. Importantly, don’t wait for a day before the time as that brings lots of pressure. Also, I draw up questions and get someone to test me, plus I memorize key words to assist with my sentence building.”

Gadija Ajam, “Plan to what you need to do, I record selected notes and remember key formulas especially with maths and science, keep practicing over and over again, and yes I am anxious and nervous for the final exam.”

Nuruneesha Benjamin, “Organizing my studies makes up a big part of my preparations, ek het ʼn studie rooster met my eet schedule, drink genoeg water, don’t stress, gebruik studie wenke om te absorber, maar nie ten koste van te lank studier nie en dan motiveer jou self herhaaldelik om jou mikpunt te bereik.”

Chethne Davids, “ Stick to your timetable, create a calm environment; surround myself with all ˈthe stuff,ˈ (learning books, question old & new papers), keep your faith & prayer regularly, Support from immediate family essential to stay focus, when studying have a goal and purpose in mind as to why you doing what are doing.”

Ryan Adams, “ I record my work, stick to a concentration of 40 minutes segments, then a break either by laying ball, eat and take a walk follow by another 40 minute concentrated session, and this can go on throughout the day, but I make sure I get enough rest prior to the subject written.”

Dorri – Hanna Langenhoven, ”A subject like life Science I start a week before the time, I work on previous questions, compare note with my classmates to see what they have to I may have miss, I ensure enough sleep, eat well, take regular breaks. Avoid distractions and keep boyfriends at bay and practice efficiently maths and science. Key is identifying your strong and weak points respectively.”

Tamon Williams, “ My method differs from subject to subject, generally for long subjects I would rewrite study page, write and listen and so it continues, If I write on a Friday, I would only start on a Wednesday and stick to 4 by 3 minutes sessions with regular breaks. For maths and science, I’ll go through and old and new question papers, and see how many I got right. My family supports me and gives me my own space to concentrate on what lies ahead,”

“Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.” (Malcolm X)

Sports thrive at Arcadia The legacy of the De Goede family in Bonteheuwel Community continues to live in the football World. This time around Mr. Kader De Goede, recently appointed sports coach at Arcadia Senior Secondary has taken the school from Zero to Heroes in his short spell at the school. LET’S TALK BUSINESS WORKING FOR THE GOVERNMENT?

According to a local research study done, there were about 2.7 million paid employees working for various government departments in South Africa at the end of 2014. There are also a number of non-remunerated persons working for the government – business owners. Did you know that any business owner that employs staff is appointed by the South African Revenue Services (SARS) as income tax collection agents? If this was not the case, the business owner would only pay the employee his or her agreed gross salary. However, the employer now has the administration

of deducting the employee’s monthly tax (PAYE) from the gross salary, declaring this on a return and paying the amount over to SARS by the seventh day of the following month. Business owners are also collection agents for the Department of Labour for Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) contributions. The same applies to Value Added Tax (VAT). The 14% that registered VAT vendors charge on their tax invoices is legally SARS’s money from the date of that tax invoice. It is unfortunately not the business’s money to spend as they please. SARS gives vendors up to two

months to collect client monies before requesting the VAT portion to be paid over. Business owners often argue that they can’t pay over VAT on money that they have not yet received. Point taken, but this indicates that the business is not efficiently collecting its own accounts, which is a bad thing anyway. So, the first thing business owners need to keep in mind is that PAYE, UIF and VAT is the government’s money temporarily held in custody by the business. Secondly, because business owners are indirectly SARS collection agents, internal collection processes need to be improved as well.
