OUR STORY SO FAR… Open the archives and see just how far we’ve come.
Our story began in 1954 as a small company called D.E.L. Supplies in Brighton, founded by Michael Vans Agnew, who recognised a need for professional hairdressing and animal grooming supplies and scissor and clipper sharpening services.
1954
The business continued to expand, and Michael’s son Peter joined the team and opened the first cash & carry wholesale outlet in Hayes, Middlesex. The company became known as Capital (Hair & Beauty), with a new logo to match - a reflection of the company’s expansion into London. New stores opened in Hove, Kingston, Dagenham, Croydon, Bournemouth and Aldershot.

Michael established self-service trade counters in Brighton and Catford, which operated until the early 1980s.
The first store in Northern Ireland opened in Derry in 2010, and soon after, Dublin in the Republic of Ireland was the location for the 30th store! Capital’s first mobile-friendly website was launched, making ordering on the go easy, quick, and secure! Further store openings followed, plus the acquisition of M&S Hair & Beauty Supplies (2017) and Hairdressing Supplies (2018) expanding the company’s footprint in the North of England and Scotland.

Recognising that the working landscape had shifted significantly post-pandemic and that more professionals were self-employed freelancers, we launched our first “Freelance Focus” Campaign, which provided a guide to help our customers navigate the challenges of self-employment.

The start of a new century brought a new distribution warehouse in Dagenham and more store openings. 2004 saw Capital’s first E-commerce website launch, and in 2005, the company began providing training courses. By the decade’s end, Capital had expanded with new stores in northern England and Scotland.

In June 2023, a devastating fire broke out at our Burgess Hill warehouse, one of our largest and most important distribution centres. The fire was reported in the afternoon and continued to burn for more than 24 hours, causing significant damage to the warehouse structure and the loss of goods stored within. Thankfully, no one was injured during the fire, and we quickly began to make arrangements to ensure that our customers were not impacted.

Peter’s appointment as Managing Director was a significant milestone in the company’s growth. New stores were opened in Gillingham, Portsmouth, Brierley Hill, Bristol, Walsall, Harrow, Southampton and Hoddesdon, and a new head office was opened in Patcham, Brighton. In 1999, a direct sales team was established. The logo also had a makeover!

When you send your client off for the day, you really want them to be able to hang on to that hydrated feeling, so once you’ve completed the final cleanse of the facial, apply a refreshing, hydrating toner all over the face. Next, apply your favourite hydrating serum, containing Hyaluronic Acid, to lock in the toner’s goodness. The next step in this hydration sandwich is a moisturiser to seal in the serum and then of course, the final step for daytime would be sunscreen. If your client is keen to try this at home, an easy rule of thumb for them to follow is to apply the thinnest, most watery product first and apply the thickest product, like a moisturiser, last.

COLL AGEN Another naturally occurring protein in the body, Collagen does so much, but we don’t have it for long. As we age our Collagen banks begin to decrease – even more so if we spend lots of time in the sun – and skin becomes thinner and sags. Although there is a divide when it comes to whether digesting animal Collagen, found in fish and cows, can change the skin’s appearance, it has been found that applying it topically can definitely boost skin hydration.
The best way to bring Collagen into your facial services is via a serum towards the end of the treatment and it also works well with the next ingredient we’re going to look at…
RETINOL The popularity of this high impact ingredient doesn’t show signs of fading any time soon. This is because scientifically, it is probably the most effective, proven anti-aging ingredient that’s available without a prescription. A form of pure Vitamin A, Retinol is converted in the skin to Retinoic Acid, and that’s where the magic happens. Once converted it has similar effects to Tretinoin, another skincare gamechanger, making skin less wrinkled and more firm and tight. It’s also a brilliant tool for any client living with Acne as it makes the pores produce less sebum. Just like with any other potent ingredient, it’s important to assess your client’s skin as well as their needs and also discuss the potential reactions once a new product has been added to their regime.

Much like the trend for facial contouring thanks to bronzers and blush, contour cutting is all about accentuating the positives and making sure your client looks good from every angle.

For Tracey Ann Smith, owner of French & Ivi, contouring’s genius lies in the fact that it can work for any head shape.
“I love to use contour cutting when I’m creating a bob for a client. The bob is an artful masterpiece of hairdressing precision, and contour cutting is integral to ensuring it turns out perfectly. By using clean lines and cutting the bob hitting the area the client wants to draw attention to – whether that’s a sharp jawline or some gorgeous cheekbones – it provides the perfect face-framing look.” Melissa Timperley, owner of Melissa Timperley Salons, Manchester, agrees: “Contour cutting is a technique used to create a bespoke haircut that complements a client’s facial features and bone structure. Instead of following a uniform pattern, the stylist carefully tailors the

It’s a style that can be worn sharp and crisp with regular visits but if this isn’t possible due to money or time, the client knows it’s going to grow out nicely and can begin to play with more texture.

For Suzie McGill, Artistic Director at Rainbow Room International, contour cutting is the ultimate technique for any client, with any hair length. “ The great thing about contour cutting is that it not only works on shorter hairstyles like bobs and pixie cuts, but it also works well on those with mid-length and longer hair, where the layers in the hair can be cut to help contour the face. For example, the client may want to have face framing layers cut hitting their chin or a fringe added into their look to draw attention to their eyes and to define their jaw line,” explains Suzie.
You know a trend is here to stay when it goes from the catwalk, to the red carpet, to the high street. Wet look waves are so easy to recreate, and they don’t involve your clients walking down the street with soaking wet hair! Here Suzie McGill, Artistic Director at Rainbow Room International, explains. “The wet look hair trend is such a great style for those who want to achieve a high impact look for a special event. The best results all come down to using the right styling products. “Remember, it’s about creating a wet look finish, so use a combination of products, such as a wet look gel and a serum. Mix them together and distribute through damp hair then leave the hair to air dry and you’ll see your client’s natural texture shine through. “As a colour specialist, I couldn’t talk about the wet look trend without bringing some vibrancy into the mix! Transforming damp locks into a glossy masterpiece is an art, and that all really begins with the right foundation. “Firstly, start with clean, wellconditioned hair to ensure the wet effect shines through and the products get to do their job. Experimenting with lash and brow looks has suddenly become just as exciting as playing with our hair. Here two Salon System Educators tell us how. First, Ruth Atkins shares her tips on how to recreate the TikTok trend anime, or Manga lashes.

Anime or Manga lashes first emerged as a trend in China, and they’ve taken the world by storm thanks to social media platform TikTok. With more than 250million views so far, it’s a trend that’s here to stay and one thing that I love about this spikey look is how easily it can be recreated using Salon System lashes and lash treatments. It all depends on how long your client wants them to last but once you know, here are my tips on achieving this doll-like, high lift style.
For those who want to be able to wear Manga lashes for longer, while also being to sleep, swim, wash etc, there’s a variety of Salon System Individual Lash Clusters available in different lengths and styles.
Using clients’ own lashes @ltorresbeauty
For the quickest and shortest wear, simply curl your client’s lashes using a manual lash curler. Apply several generous layers of mascara, and before they’re fully dry, take your tweezers and pinch sections of the lashes together.
Using Lash Lift Using the smallest curler (despite the length of the natural lash) proceed to lift the lashes as usual. Once completed use the booster lotion and pinch a few lashes together to create a spikey look. The booster will gently hold the lashes in place whilst conditioning them and it’s something that can be used each time a client wants to wear this look, before applying mascara. The lift will last for between 4-6 weeks and can be enhanced as above with plenty of mascara.

Brow trends change all the time and what’s at the height of fashion doesn’t always work for everyone. Our brows are there to frame the face and a well-constructed brow should always enhance, define, and lift the eyes and face. When the brow doesn’t work with the face shape, it can easily make the client’s face look older, longer, wider, or more full and droopy. Here are a few tips for creating a great brow for your clients and some points to consider…
#1 THEIR FACE SHAPE
#2 BROW MAPPING IS KEY
The moment my client steps into my treatment room I am looking at their face, and it’s something you shouldn’t be afraid of. Take a good look at the jaw line, the size of their forehead, where their eyes sit, the width and length of their face. It’s important to learn and understand face shapes and which brow shapes work. As a rule, a brow would be shaped opposite to the face shape, for example:
You should be fully aware of the 3 key points for a basic brow map; that’s the starting point, the end point (where the tail of the brow finishes) and where the highest point of the brow arch needs to sit.
Round face should avoid a very
rounded brow as it will make the face look more round and full. Instead, create a brow with strong lines and angles with a good arch, to help lift and lengthen the face. Square face should try to avoid
strong lines and create a soft arch to soften a strong jaw line. Long, rectangular face should
avoid very high arches as it adds to the length of the face. Instead, to shorten the length of the face keep brows more horizontal or straight and reduce the height of the arch. This will draw eyes across the face and away from the length.
Then it’s time to look at your client’s eyes. If their eyes are set closely, and I want to create the illusion the eyes are wider, I will open the gap in-between the brows more. Yet if their eyes are very wide set and I want to create the illusion that their eyes are closer, I will reduce the gap in-between the brows. If their forehead is very high and I wish to create the illusion of less, then I will create a higher arch, but if the forehead is very low, I will create less of an arch. Another top tip for styling a brow is to always have your client in a seated position – not lying flat – with relaxed muscles, and work on your client in the same position as they see their brows. Also, always work from the front of your client, as brows look very different when you’re styling from behind! 31

Then I like to go through my product bag and take out any products I’m no longer enjoying or using and swap them out for anything new that I’ve been sent from a brand. I do the same with my electricals too, making sure they’re all in good working condition, and I’ll also replace my kit bags if needs be. With my hairdressing cupboard I like to take everything out and wipe and disinfect each item before doing a check stock. Most importantly, I feel as a freelancer you must know your numbers and where you are with your profit and loss and what goals you would like to put in place for the new year, so this is a great time to go through my QuickBooks accounting app and check anything I’ve missed.
