IT’S COLD OUTSIDE

While most of us are aware of the damaging effects of the sun during the Summer months, we don’t always realise that with the colder days of Winter, and the changing weather conditions, come even more negative affects. Here’s what you can do for clients who need some extra TLC from head to toe.
LAYER UP
Cold weather is tough on our skin; as temperatures drop and humidity lowers, the air becomes dryer and has a harsh effect. Moisture is drawn out of the air, and out of the skin, and as Winter winds kick in, your clients are soon battling redness, dryness and dull skin – even clients who have always had robust, glowing skin can begin to experience sensitive skin issues. Add to this the incredibly drying heat of central heating and clients can experience extreme dryness that could even result in bleeding skin. So, how do you prevent this?
The Winter months are all about layering, and that’s not just for t-shirts and sweaters. By layering skin and bodycare products there’s more chance of really locking moisture in. For massage clients that means applying a body oil on top of a skin cream; if you’re giving a foot scrub, make sure it’s followed by a nourishing foot mask. If your client’s coming in for a glam manicure, encourage them to walk away with a soothing cuticle oil. It’s a great time to think about offering multi-layered services as it means you can boost your profits and also promise longer-lasting effects.
SEASONAL SERVICES
Here Karen Thomson, Owner of KAM Hair and Body Spa and Holly Rox, a Beauty Therapist at MARKDAVID Salon, share their Winter offerings to keep clients glowing.
“At KAM we have a large range of beauty treatments available for our clients, and during the Winter months is the perfect time for a much-needed pamper. One of the beauty treatments we recommend most during the colder months are our facials. We offer a range of different facials available to suit all clients and their skin type, including the Re-Hydrator Facial, a favourite in the Winter months to keep skin looking and feeling smooth and rejuvenated when the cold weather can make skin dry and dull.
“We also have a number of Cool Peel Treatments, which really help to revitalise dry, tired-looking skin and give the skin a bright appearance and healthy glow. We offer retail products and always educate our clients on how they can keep their skin looking its best between appointments by using them. We inform them on exfoliants for the face and body that keep the skin smooth, as well as face and body moisturisers and hand creams to keep skin moisturised and soft.” Karen Thomson
“At MARKDAVID we recently added an advanced medical grade pedicure treatment, which uses state of the art ingredients to remove hard skin, cracked heels and calluses from feet while offering the relaxation of the usual pedicure. It’s basically a facial for your client’s feet!
“The treatment includes exfoliation of the feet and lower leg with Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), which help to maintain hydration in the skin while giving a relaxing scrub. Then we do a foot mask, to heal and rejuvenate, followed by a foot soak to reduce puffiness and swelling and then a foot and lower leg massage – which not only smells amazing but also plumps and improves the skin’s appearance. The entire treatment is incredibly relaxing for clients and it’s a great way for them to look after their feet and lower legs during the Winter months.” Holly Rox
