Episcopal students explore 3-D environments with Google tech BY C.J. FUTCH

cfutch@theadvocate.com Google Expeditions brought its 3-D magic to Episcopal School on Dec. 2, said Jason Hubbard, associate head of schools. Expeditions consists of Google cardboard view finders paired with a smartphone app that presents visual media stereoscopically, allowing the user to step into a new world and look around – literally – exploring environments like a volcano, a coral reef and a Ha-

waiian atoll, by turning their heads. Teachers instructed the fourth- and second-grade students to hold their viewfinders carefully, “with one hand on each side,” before starting the program, which began with an island off the coast of Florida. When they got the signal to look, they gasped, then sat, mouths agape, turning their heads in every direction, and sometimes jumping when they äSee 3-D, page 2G

Bessie Carter Jackson helped two other adults, a daughter and granddaughter, corral the 11 children in her large family through the lines at Capitol Middle School’s lobby on Saturday. The family was the 36th in line for Breakfast with Santa, an event put on every year by the Jack and Jill of America’s Baton Rouge Chapter. It’s been an ongoing tradition for the club for more than 30 years, said Vanessa Lafleur, president of the chapter, and a favorite for both patrons and chapter members alike, she said. The event begins with a hot breakfast for all those in attendance, then moves to a photo with Santa Claus, then the line for bikes — which go to the first 300 or so children in line, and toys for the rest, Lafleur said. While the families wait in line, tables keep everyone entertained with crafts, face painting and other good-

Receiving bikes, first row from left, are siblings and cousins, Diamond Carter, Aaz’iontea Williams, Tecarie Joseph, Zechariah Carter and Jecaire Joseph, and back row, Ta’Kiy Dennis, Aaliyah Carter, Hezekiah Carter, Tyquan Dennis, Ke’onta Dennis, and Ra’Shawn Carter Robinson. Three generations of Bessie Carter Jackson’s family, great-grandmother to the children, attended the event this year. They were 36th in line for the bike giveaway. The first 300 children in line got bikes.

The club is primarily a group of mothers, said Vice President Antoinette Patterson, who work together to find ways to make sure their children are exposed to culture, history and education, and give back to their community with philanthropy. “We’re cultivating strong leadership in our children, she said. “We have been blessed, and we want them to understand that when you are blessed with much, you have the responsibility to reach back and bring someone else up. Volunteers from Jack and Jill, their children, spouses and other volunteers from high schools all over the city coordinated efforts to keep the lines running smoothly, and everything did run smoothly, considering 4,500 people would come through the event before they were done. “It’s a big effort, but we always try to dream big, Lafleur said. Their next big event will be an Easter Egg Roll. “The members don’t

saw something unexpected. “Hey, look below you, one student told another, and a third warned his neighbor of a shark behind them. Since all the viewers were presenting the same 3-D environment, they could all see the same things if they were looking in the same direction. Cris Newsome with Google Expeditions brought several cardboard viewers, complete with smartphones and apps, and the tablet computer used to control the experience. Google Expedition has a variety of tools that allow teachers to use the app in pretty much every subject, including art. The visit was free, as is the app if the school decides to add Google Expeditions to its classrooms, which Hubbard believes to be important. When he signed up to be considered for a school visit, Hubbard was thinking not just of the novelty, which piques students’ interest. Programs like Google Expeditions represent technology they

will likely be expected to know long before they graduate. “We’re looking at acquiring the apps for educational purposes, of course, but we want to teach our students to take that one step further, and learn how to produce their own content, Hubbard said. It’s impressive technology, he said, that uses another cell phone app to take multiple pictures of an environment and paste them together to create the 3-D world, so they could conceivable make their own 3-D environments. The images used are static, Hubbard said, because students focus better when they are looking around a still world, though immersive video is becoming more common. About 300 students got a chance to use Google Expeditions, Hubbard said. He hopes to move the school toward use and creation of interactive still images and video. “It’s the way this technology is moving, pretty quickly, Hubbard said. For information on the program and other uses for the viewers, visit www.google.com/ cardboard.
