The issue of navy blue bottoms came up during the board’sfinal gathering before the Aug. 8start of the 2024-25 school year as members took up aslateofpolicy revisions, most of them generating little discussion.
Board member Crystal London said constituentshavecontacted her asking for the option of navy blue bottoms. She touted the benefits ofadding the newcolor choice to the dress code, such as hiding stains better than the currently required khaki bottoms.
London encouraged her colleagues to take avote, saying parents have only acouple of weeks left for uniform shopping before school begins.
Board member Elecia Lathon, however, urged the item to be tabled —which the board ultimately did.Lathonnoted that only six of the board’s nine members were present at the meeting.
Also at themeeting, the board heard about:
n Increases in school meal prices: Student luncheswill go up by 10 cents, costing $2.35 at elementary schools and$2.60 at middle
andhigh schools. The price of breakfast for employees also will increaseto$2.75.
n New colors forCopperMill Elementary School, the only school in Zachary that does not use red and blue:The school’s current colors are green and gold; it will gradually transition to colors that match the restof the district.

Along the way they defeated the topseeded NorthDeSoto and, as mentioned previously,West Feliciana TheTigers are an impressive program and should be agood pre-district tune up. The district remains the same with Scotlandville, Liberty,Woodlawn, Central and Catholic. The Broncos will play three district games on the road starting with Scotlandville on Oct. 11 and close out thetwo-game district home stand against reigning Division 1Select Champion Catholic. Neither Scotlandville nor Liberty —the Broncos road opponent on Oct. 18 —reachedthe playoffs in 2023 and were rebuilding. Woodlawn, who will travel to Zachary on Oct. 25, opened the playoffs with awin over Huntington before being beaten handily by Edna Karr in thesecondround
(50-0). Afterthe Panthers, the Broncos makethe shorttrip to Central to compete against the Wildcats in David Simoneaux’s
second season on Nov.1 Last year the Broncos defeated theWildcatsathome in atight game (35-28). The Wildcats ad-
vanced to the quarterfinals in 2023 before falling to Dutchtown (21-20) who the following week fall to the Broncos in the semifi-
nals by atwo-day score of 31-28.
The regular season ends on a Thursday night, Nov.7,athome against those Catholic Bears. Last year’sgame was epic with the Broncos falling in acontroversial overtime (35-28) that saw penalty flags, rule books and other shenanigans. From there, who knows? Apologiesfor theomission In my ramblings last week about former ZHS athletes and their summer adventures Iforgot to mention Boston Scott. Scott has moved from the East Coast (Philadelphia Eagles) to the West Coast (Los Angeles Rams). They will open training camp on July 25 at Loyola Marymount University Scott will be the elder statesmen in the running backs room with rookie Blake Corum (Michigan), second-year man Zach Evans (Ole Miss), Ronnie Rivers (Fresno State) and Kyren Williams (Notre Dame). Williams is the returning starter after rushing for 1,144 yards and scoring 12 TDs in 2023.
