Tailgating: It’s a family tradition BY CLAIRE SALINAS

Tailgating is a big deal with both students and alumni in Cajun Country. For some families, it’s more than a pastime — it’s a tradition passed from generation to generation, much like a treasured family heirloom. Susan Fisher, who was born and raised in Acadiana, says she’s been attending UL-Lafayette football games since she was in her mother’s belly. Now, her grandchildren are among the family members who gather there at the same tailgating spot her family has used since 1988. Fisher is the special projects coordinator with St. Landry-Evangeline United Way. “We have probably had up to 200 people come by the tent, never at the same time,” said Fisher. “It’s a day of camaraderie, making new memories and enjoying the day, rain or shine.” It takes a utility trailer to bring tailgating supplies to the Fishers’ spot, where the trailer is transformed into a full bar. They even have a personal porta-let for their guests during the game. For each game, a different crew of tailgaters takes responsibility for providing the food. However, the Homecoming menu doesn’t change. David Fisher Jr., Fisher’s brother, camps out with friends all night on Friday to cook a pig in his Cajun microwave. The level of devotion to UL-Lafayette football and care put into the family’s tailgating stems from Fisher’s dad David Fisher Sr., a World War II veteran who played football and ran track for the university from 1946 to 1950. During his senior year, he was student body president, the outstanding gradu-

Today, Fisher Sr. is 92 years old, and remains a die-hard Cajuns fan. “My dad is an amazing man — anyone who knows him will tell you that,” said Fisher. “Until this year, he was the one who drove the trailer out to the field. He is usually the first one out there in the morning and he’s usually one of the last ones to leave.” Fisher and her crew end each season

with a bang by frying turkey and taking part in the jam session put on by her brother David Fisher Jr., a drummer in a local band, for the last game of the year. “My favorite memories are being there with my family and friends, especially my children and grandchildren,” said Fisher. “In 2015 we lost my mother and my son Ty. The following year we cooked in his honor. He was a great cook, so we continue to honor him that way.”

According to the Morton Arboretum in Illinois, mulch protects roots against winter’s extreme cold as well. Applied in the fall, mulch inhibits freezing and thawing, reducing the likelihood that plants will be injured. Here are some factors to consider. TEXTURE: The Arboretum recommends medium-textured mulch. Fine particles may retain moisture that will evaporate before it reaches the plant roots. Materials that are too coarse may be incapable of holding sufficient amounts of water to benefit the soil. NUTRIENTS: Organic mulches provide humus and decompose over time, adding nutrients into the soil. The Morton Arboretum recommends that homeowners use organic mulch that was composted or treated prior to application so any weeds, insects or microorganisms are killed. APPLICATION: Correct application is essential. Applying too much mulch can cause decay and make lawns and plants more vulnerable to disease.
