Celebrating rice in Crowley since 1927 BY CHERÉ COEN

Special to The Advocate They say living in Crowley is “rice and easy,” because growing rice is the name of the game in Acadia Parish. That’s why every fall thousands descend on Crowley for the annual International Rice Festival. “We’re the largest and oldest agricultural festival in the state,” said Shanna Morgan, festival coordinator. “And we’re still free, thanks to our sponsors.” Crowley has been labeled the “Rice Capital of America” for its vast rice harvests and mills. Acadia Parish still contains numerous rice mills and farmers now alternate between rice production and crawfish farming. Since 1927, on the third weekend in October, it’s all about rice. This year, the 82nd International Rice Festival will be Oct. 18-20 in downtown Crowley. The 2018 theme is “Rice…the super hero of grain” with the festival poster mimicking a comic book hero supporting rice farming. The fun begins at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, with entertainment, food vendors and carnival rides. The festival officially opens at 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19, with music until midnight and arts and crafts in Levy Park. “Friday is known as children’s day,” Morgan explained, because the junior Rice King and Queen will be crowned and a parade showcasing local schools rolls at 1:30 p.m. Also on Friday is one of the festival’s most popular events, the Rice and Cookery Contest where all dish entries must contain rice. Categories include rice and meat, rice and seafood, rice salad or vegetable and rice dessert, the latter of which brings forth all kinds of innovative dishes. There will be winners in eight categories (both adult and teen divisions) and the coveted Chef de Riz designation, the overall champion, is chosen out of the eight first-place winners. “There are some fun things that go on there,” Morgan said of the cooking

competition. “Everyone loves to participate in that event.” Saturday events include the 10 a.m. crowning of the International Rice Festival Queen, rice thrashing demonstrations with old farm equipment at First Baptist Church, a grand parade at 3 p.m. down Parkerson Avenue from 10th Street to Second Street, the annual car show, a 5K run and entertainment from noon to midnight.

Music on two stages Musical performers on two stages include Yvette Landry, Wayne Toups, Geno Delafose, Category 6, Bag of Donuts and Jamie Bergeron, to name a few. How to find an honest contractor Find the right person for home repairs after a storm With hurricane season in full swing and unpredictable winter weather around the corner, homeowners may find it necessary to call in professionals to help repair damage to their homes. It’s an unfortunate fact of life that after a natural or manmade disaster, there are people who will try to profit from a community’s misfortune. But a fly-by-night contractor is one disaster you can prevent if you follow a few steps to ensure you hire a reputable professional. In fact, it makes sense to follow these guidelines when you are evaluating any potential contractor, whether it’s for post-disaster repairs or a planned renovation to your home. Here are some guidelines to keep in mind:

Price and payment • Don’t get pressured into signing a contract immediately. You should not be told that you need to sign a contract that day or risk a price increase. • Paying a deposit of anywhere from 20 percent to 50 percent is common, however, you should not be asked to pay the full cost in advance,
