Two clubs with golf and much more

Le Triomphe For Bob Dunn, it’s all about the golf.

“I find that I am surprised and extremely blessed that we have a golf course of that caliber,” said Dunn of Megadrill Services Ltd. and a member of Le Triomphe since 1995. “I can attest there may be one or two in other large cities, but for me Le Triomphe is the most challenging and pleasurable to play.”

He’s referring to the Robert Trent Jones Jr. signature championship golf course and one of only two clubs in the state to host a sanctioned PGA Tour event. Le Triomphe is also the home of Top “100” club fitter, John Joy. Joy, who has worked at Le Triomphe for more than five years, was named as one of America’s 100 Best Club fitters

by Golf Digest and one of only three Louisianians selected for the honor.

“Very fine fellow,” said Dunn. “Mike Maraist, owner of the Golf Club and golf course, goes above and beyond what you can reasonably expect. Without reservation, the current course superintendent has done an outstanding job of improving the course since he’s been here.”

For his wife, Judy, it’s the home-awayfrom-home. And the dogs, mostly the dogs.

“When you drive through those gates, it’s like driving home on vacation,” she said. “Their Sunday brunches are nice.

And Yappy Hour. It’s a dog-friendly event, you take pictures and vote online.

Our girls are in with their daddy.”

The event benefits local animal shelters. “They assist with our causes — the Symphony, Kites above Acadiana — they’re very open to spreading the word.”

Owner of Dunn’s Furniture & Interiors, Judy uses Le Triomphe amenities for both business and family, including the private room for a holiday office party. Aside from networking and business meetings, there’s a small but

well-equipped gym, swimming pool and tennis. Water aerobics, pool nights, and special events.

“They have Wine Cuvee nights, steak nights, fish nights, and theme nights like Mediterranean, Caribbean, and French,” said Bob. “The restaurant facility is very good — good chefs and good service.”

“And nice ambience.”

The club manager, Dawna Waterberry, also organizes Saturday morning cars and coffee. “Some of us are quite fond of our automobiles,” said Bob. “They bring them over and we stand and mill around, it’s a chill-out function.”

‘The management and staff really go out of their way.”

Like Le Triomphe, it’s that clubhouse feel and sense of belonging that prevails at Oakbourne Country Club, where security and courtesy is more than just standing at the gate.

Oakbourne Country Club Billy Miller spent 30 years with the State Police and retired as a sergeant.

He has worked at Oakbourne country Club for roughly the last six, on duty every Monday through Wednesday.

“Number one are the members,” he said. “It’s a wonderful place to work. There’s great communication Billy Miller among the managers, it has a great tradition, and it’s a beautiful place to play with its 100-year- old oaks. They join just to play golf.”

“Even if you’re not that good, people just want to be out there.”

“Our golf course is ranked third in the state by Golf Digest,” said general manager and COO Greg Klemp. “We are the only private member-owned club in Lafayette, and all profits are used for the club, maintenance, and the course.”

Oakbourne is proactive and courts younger members. There are training camps for the young, and ULL’s golf team practices there.

“Our main reason for joining was our children,” said new member Emily Foreman Babineaux. “I love the family friendly events they host — bingo night, Campout on the Course — my kids loved the summer camps that focused on tennis, golf and swimming lessons. The Friday nights by the pool are great, and not getting kids dressed for dinner.”

“Great memories have already been

made there in our first year as members.”

At least one member has found his Oakbourne membership a lifesaver, and Miller has the commendation letter to prove it.

“The tennis manager said someone had fallen on the court, I was close, and the individual was unresponsive. We started CPR until the Fire Department and Acadiana Ambulance arrived.”

“I thought we might have lost him, but he’s in his own room right now.”

“Oakbourne was good enough to give us the training. I thank God for that.”

Bats don’t deserve their scary reputation Metro Media Literature and Hollywood have done much to villainize bats. However, bats are far less menacing that many people assume. In fact, their fondness for mosquito-sized insects benefits humans.

While there are bats that feed on blood (vampire bats), they tend to stick to cows, pigs, horses, and birds for their meals. It is uncommon for vampire bats to bite humans for food. Vampire bats make a small cut with their teeth and then lap up the blood with their tongues, rather than “suck” the blood like they do in movies.

These bats are native to Central and South America.

Most other bats feed on fruit, fish or insects, particularly those that reside in North America. A single bat can eat up to 1,200 mosquito-sized insects every hour, and a bat will usually eat around 8,000 insects a night. It’s beneficial to have bats around to serve as all-natural pesticides. Bats are nocturnal mammals that “see” in the dark using echolocation.

Their eyesight is actually quite poor, but these echos serve as a form of sonar so that bats can find prey and steer clear of obstacles in their path.

Bathroom remodeling tops list in survey The kitchen is king when it comes to making an impact on a home’s identity.

Few other spaces in a home can even come close to the significance of the kitchen — making it truly the “heart of the home.”

But having a beautiful bathroom is just as, if not more important for many homeowners. In fact, according to a recent survey by the National Association of Home Builders, bathrooms overtook kitchens as the most popular remodeling project.

Earlier this year, NAHB released the survey results, which rank the most common remodeling projects from the previous year. While many of the top projects have remained consistently popular over the years, kitchens and bathrooms continue to jockey for the top spot.

“Small-scale renovations are slowly becoming just as popular as large-scale projects, as seen with bathroom remodeling becoming more common than kitchens,” said 2018 NAHB Remodelers Chair Joanne Theunissen, CPG, CGR, a remodeler from Mt. Pleasant, Mich.

“Home owners are finding cost-effective and shorter-timeframe upgrades not only add comfort to their homes, but they also add value.”

• 78 percent did kitchen remodeling • 49 percent did whole house remodeling • 37 percent did room additions • 30 percent did window/door replacements Rounding out the top 10 list of common remodeling jobs were: building decks, repairing property damage, finishing basements, performing general handyman services, and replacing or repairing roofs.

Going ‘Green’ is Key

While remodeling is commonly associated with kitchens and baths, demand for green upgrades continues to swell as home owners seek to save on utility costs, improve air quality and increase the value of their homes.

An additional survey by NAHB Remodelers showed that high-performing, low-emissivity (Low-E) windows are the most common green-building product installed by residential remodelers. Programmable thermostats and high-efficiency HVAC systems also ranked highly among the most common green products used.
