Connecting music, culture, economy Music Cities Convention focuses on how to support music culture BY CLAIRE SALINAS
Special to The Advocate The 7th Music Cities Convention by Sound Diplomacy will bring cultural leaders from around the globe to Lafayette to showcase best practices on how to use music to improve city life. Sound Diplomacy was drawn to Lafayette as a host city not only because of its rich music culture, but because of the recent CREATE initiative launched by the Lafayette Consolidated Government. CREATE stands for Culture, Recreation, Entertainment, Arts, Tourism and Economy. “Our music community is one of the most visible and beloved sectors of our cultural economy,” said Kate Durio, CREATE director and assistant to Mayor-President Joel Robideaux. “This convention is an opportunity for our city to understand how we can all do our part to better support our music community and nurture its contributions to that

economy.” The theme of the convention is focused on diversity and improving cities and communities through music. Speakers will include everyone from CEOs of music initiatives and districts, to executive directors of music museums, record company founders, festival and music event organizers, musicians, students, professors and managers of radio stations. Some will come from as far away as Australia and Spain as well as other parts of the U.S. “We wanted to showcase some great initiatives from around the world and provide an opportunity for Lafayette to show the world how it’s a leader in developing itself as a music city,” said Luke Jones, events and marketing manager at Sound Diplomacy. “Our speakers will be discussing everything from the role of hip-hop as a community builder, to why community workspaces matter, to increasing opportunities for children to engage in music, so there will be so many opportunities for the delegates to learn from each other.” The convention is open to anyone who is interested in seeing music supported and developed as a cultural driver in Lafayette. “I hope that the dialogue and talent coming to our community through the Music Cities convention will serve as a catalyst to use the momentum we have with the CREATE initiative to propel us forward,” said Ben Berthelot, CEO, Lafayette Travel. The Lafayette community is encouraged to come out Wednesday night to the Blue Moon Saloon Jam on Wednesday, Oct. 10, and to the Warehouse 535 concert at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 11, with 30 local musicians, highlighting the Caesar Vincent Project. “There are several ways to participate, the convention is one opportunity, but these other events are hosted to encourage more local interaction with con-
