From floats to table tops, Mardi Gras inspires creativity BY CHERÉ COEN
Special to The Advocate The holidays have passed and with them the bright and colorful Christmas decorations, lights and garlands. In Louisiana, however, decorating doesn’t go into hibernation in January. It simply means changing one decoration for another. The Carnival season began Jan. 6, a day known as the Epiphany or Twelfth Night. The season is long this year — Mardi Gras will be Tuesday, March 5 — which offers homeowners lots of chances to adorn their houses in the Carnival colors of purple, green and gold and grace tabletops for Mardi Gras parties. And since Carnival is all about revelry, there’s no holding back. “The more glitz and shine — that’s what Mardi Gras is all about,” said Lafayette designer and florist Ted Viator. “You want to make it feel like a party.” Most people decorate with the Carnival colors and add tinsel, lights and garlands, Viator said. Crowns, masks, fleur de lis and beads caught from former parades add festive ingredients. Another great advantage of a late Mardi Gras is the possibility that spring will arrive at the same time. Viator suggests incorporating early spring flowering branches such as gold forsythia. “You can put it in a glass of water,” he explained. “It lasts a long time and that’s a great thing about it.” Redbud tree branches and the lavender and cream flowers of the Japanese magnolia also provide color in early spring. Magnolia branches may be cut and sprayed gold as table accents as well, Viator said, and purple, green and gold gladiolas make nice centerpieces. The first step to decorating for a Carnival event is to create a theme and incorporate colors, said “It’s a Wrap” designer Kim Veillon, who’s been decorating Carnival balls for 37 years. Next, Veillon suggests picking a centerpiece, which may be flowers, props, simple greenery or flowers. “From there bring in linens, chair covers, maybe special chairs if you want,” he said. Veillon believes a Carnival party should have party favors, items full of glitz and glam and noise makers. Gift bags of favors should match the colors and theme of the party and be placed at table settings or on each chair. When we met up with Veillon decorating tables for Lafayette’s Krewe d’Amusement’s ball, his assistant Brian Crutchfield had just finished a dramatic centerpiece involving the Eiffel Tower adorned in soft blue lights accented by white roses and lilies topped with a white bow and cascading swag.

For decorating the home, Carnival is a chance to be creative, Veillon said. Beads and masks may be placed throughout the home or attached to a wreath for the front door. “It’s better to do your own thing,” he explained. “It’s always fun to swag the door in purple, green and gold.” Both Veillon and Viator suggest flying flags as well. “And if you’re part of a krewe, definitely let them fly,” Viator said. Bottom line, this time of year just screams for decorations so what are you waiting for?

What it means when you see women in red Heart disease is the leading cause of death in woman
Metro Media Heart disease might be seen as something that predominantly affects men, but women are not immune to this potentially deadly condition. In fact, doctors and health care professionals advise women to take serious heed of heart disease, which claims more female lives than breast cancer, other cancers, respiratory disease, and Alzheimer’s disease combined. The American Heart Association indicates that more women are now aware that heart disease is the leading cause of death among females than they were 20 years ago. While just 30 percent of women recognized that in 1997, that figure had risen to 56 percent by 2012. However, the AHA reports that only 42 percent of women aged 35 and older are concerned about heart disease. Initiatives like Go Red for Women in February help shed light on the threat posed by heart disease. Here are some facts to consider. • Roughly one female death per min-
ute is attributed to heart disease. • Heart disease affects women of all ages. In fact, the AHA says that the combination of smoking and birth control pills can increase heart disease risk in younger women by 20 percent. • Mercy Health System says about 5.8 percent of all white women, 7.6 percent of black women, and 5.6 percent of Mexican American women have coronary heart disease. • According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost twothirds of women who die suddenly of coronary heart disease have no previous symptoms. • When symptoms are present in women, they are not like the stereotypical clutching of the chest that men experience. Heart disease symptoms in women can include upper back pain, chest discomfort, heartburn, extreme fatigue, nausea, and shortness of breath. • Even fit women can be affected by heart disease. Inherent risk factors, such as high cholesterol, can counteract healthy habits.

Teen dating violence may be more common than many parents know. Youth.gov says a national survey of teens in the U.S. found that 10 percent of them had been the victims of physical dating violence in the past year, and approximately 20 percent of adolescents reported psychological or verbal abuse within the previous year. Young people undergo many changes in their teenage years. This is a time when social circles develop, and many begin dating. Teens may be so anxious to feel accepted and loved that they overlook some of the warning signs of a bad relationship. As a result, teens may compromise their own safety in an effort to keep relationships alive. To ensure teens stay safe while dating, parents are advised to speak to their children about violence, particularly as it pertains to dating. Violence includes physical abuse and more. Sexual assault, psychological and emotional violence or even stalking also must be discussed with
teens. Parents can emphasize the importance of forming healthy relationships built on honesty, trust, equality, and compromise. Here are some suggestions for parents seeking to help teens who are of dating age recognize and thwart teen dating violence. • Use respectful language that does not promote stereotypes or sexism and is unlikely to be perceived as condescending by teens. • Learn the warning signs of abuse. These can include a drop in grades; disinterest in previous hobbies or activities; physical bruises; symptoms of depression or anxiety; and other changes in behavior. • Keep an open dialogue with teens who are dating to ensure that the relationship is healthy and safe. • Lessen the stigma for those who may have experienced violence coming forward by openly communicating and supporting others. • Show respect to others and be proud and respectful of who you are. Be a positive role model in all you do.

Don’t let rising rates delay plans to buy a home Consider these steps to offset today’s mortgage rates Mortgage interest rates have been inching up, and although rates dropped at the beginning of 2019, most experts predict that rates will continue to rise throughout the year. With the average 30-year-fixed rate nearing 5 percent, some would-be home buyers may begin to reconsider their purchase plans. However, it’s important to keep today’s rates in perspective and be confident that it’s still a good time to buy. For one thing, beyond minor shortterm fluctuations, rates are not expected to significantly decrease any time soon. Only a decade ago, a mortgage rate as low as 5 percent would have been a better-than-average deal. Go back a little further, when average rates were mostly between 7 percent and 9 percent, and it’s quite a bargain. So if you’re ready to buy, go ahead and lock in today’s rate. It’s not just interest rates that are rising. If you’re considering renting because of higher mortgage rates, take a good look at rent prices, too. When more people rent, rents tend to go up. Consider the cost of higher rent, and take another look to see how much interest those extra dollars per month might cover. Either way, if you’re thinking of buying, run the numbers and see where you stand. Many factors influence the cost of a home purchase. Does the difference in payments between an interest rate around 5 percent and one a
couple tenths of a point lower put it out of reach? Can you tweak other factors to balance the costs and keep the purchase affordable? Consider whether you might: • Put a bit more down so you can finance less. Is there somewhere you can dig down and find a bit more for a downpayment? Maybe look into using some of that IRA savings which you can use penalty-free if you’re a first-time buyer. • Consider a shorter-term mortgage. If you can afford the monthly payments, a 15-year mortgage will cost a lot less in interest over the life of the mortgage than a 30-year mortgage. • Weigh your “must have” factors for a house — are there any that you’re willing to let go of for a lower asking price? Would a smaller house, or the next neighborhood over from your favorite, or one fewer half bath still work for you? • Shop and compare mortgage rates, fees and terms. Whatever the going rates, there will differences in rates and fees with different lenders. Throughout the upcoming year, housing markets should expect rates to resume their ascent, heading near 5 percent by the end of 2019.
