A block party is a neighborhood event held in the street so that residents may socialize. The benefits range from making simple connections to establishing community, a framework that can come in handy for a variety of reasons. It can be as simple as a few families bringing out their barbecues or as organized as a mini-festival. “Block parties can be a lot of fun and inexpensive to produce, however the main component is participation,” said Richard Young, a veteran party producer and owner of Element, an event rental company. “If you live on a street where the neighbors seem to be involved and get along with each other, you’ve got the perfect recipe for an engaging and fun block party.” If this is your first trip around the block, consider forming a committee to perform tasks such as applying for permits, designing fliers, buying or making arrangements for food and drinks, staffing the food and beverage tables, plus set up and clean up. Invitations should include the date, start and end times, location, who is invited (residents only, for example), what supplies to bring and a contact person for RSVP. “Another important component for a block party is obviously food and beverage,” said Young. “And it’s always easy to keep the budget low by asking all neighbors to bring a dish or a beverage. One slick way to do this is to make it a contest. Have a cook off, where the adults compete for the best jambalaya dish. Have all the kids compete with who can make the best lemonade. Now you have the essential food and beverage taken care of easily.” “Each participant or house can set up a small pop-up tent in the street or right by the street in their yard and make their own signage. Now you’ve got the makings of your own mini festival.” Claudia Lyles planned a block party with a Neighborhood Watch program in mind, inviting residents to her cul-de-sac
Richard Young at a Bendel Gardens block party. to hear remarks by law enforcement and city council in addition to a meet n’ greet. “We wanted to start a tradition in our Stone Streets neighborhood that fostered goodwill, built friendships and a sense of belonging but also provided the comfort of security with the launch of our new Neighborhood Watch Program,” she said. Rick and Gretchen Stewart gave a block party out of nostalgia for the way they grew up, when neighbors knew each other. And while fun was the focus for the children, adults listened to Denise Lanclos of the Azalea Trail Revitalization project rally homeowners to plant azaleas. “Rick and I put colorful flyers in every mailbox in the hood,” said Stewart. “We asked for pot luck dishes and a real pull together. Your neighbors can surprise you--people bring chairs and tables and thank you for the work. It is work, but worth it.” “It’s always extremely important to have activities to keep the children involved,” said Young. “The last thing you want is your kids to start complaining that it’s boring and they want to go inside.” Enter the fun jump, a good way to create exercise for the kids and something

They can be purchased online or on eBay. You may just need to consider the liability issue of who’s going to actually own it or store it.” Depending whether or not you actually use the street may require a permit. Permits are not that difficult to get, it just takes a little planning and a trip down to City Hall. Contact the local municipality to apply and determine any requirements. One will also be necessary if you want to close streets to traffic, and there may be other criteria as well. A wait process of several weeks or longer is not uncommon. Don’t forget some entertainment for the adults as well. “As far as entertainment and music I like to combine the two,” said Young. “A make- shift stage, possibly in back of a pickup truck, can work out great. Call your resources together and set up some speakers, a microphone and some karaoke and you are in business for hours.”

Devices are everywhere. According to a recent visual networking index forecast from Cisco, each person in North America will have 13 networked devices and connections by 2021. With all those devices, it’s no surprise that the smart home movement is gaining traction. Those who have yet to jump on the bandwagon can benefit from learning more about smart homes and why it’s intelligent to have a smart home. What is a smart home? According to SmartHomeUSA.com, the term “smart home” is commonly used to define residences in which appliances, lighting, heating and cooling units, televisions, computers, entertainment systems, and security systems are capable of communicating with one another. Each of these components can be controlled remotely, typically via a smartphone. Why is it smart to have a smart home? The benefits of a smart home are numerous, and will likely only multiply as people utilize more devices. TIME: A recent joint survey from CNET and Coldwell Banker found that
57 percent of Americans say that smart home technology saves them an average of 30 minutes per day. That’s an especially beneficial advantage for busy parents and/or professionals who find it difficult to juggle all of their daily responsibilities. MONEY: Another benefit to smart homes is their cost savings. Because devices can be controlled remotely, smart home owners can adjust the temperatures on their heating and cooling units while away from home. That means they can arrive home each night to a comfortable home without having to run their HVAC systems all day while no one was home. In fact, the CNET/Coldwell Banker survey found 45 percent of Americans say that smart home products save them an average of $98.30 each month. INVESTMENT: Whether you’re a developer or a single-family homeowner, real estate is an investment. Making a home as appealing to prospective buyers as possible is a great way to get a better return on your real estate investment. The CNET/Coldwell Banker survey found that 81 percent of buyers would be more likely to buy a home if smart home products were already installed.

Simple steps for smart water use Easy-to-fix leaks can waste many gallons of water each day

If you have one, use the dishwasher to wash dishes — and make sure it’s fully loaded before you run it. Washing just a few dishes and pans under running water soon uses the same amount of water as an entire load in the dishwasher. If you wash by hand, use a tub of soapy water and a tub of plain water for at least a preliminary rinse.
Americans use fresh water for basics of everyday living, which means we are constantly using one of earth’s most precious resources. In fact, less than 1 percent of the earth’s water is available for human use. So we have a big responsibility to use water wisely. Consider these relatively easy steps to cut back on how much water you use without requiring big expense or lifestyle changes.

Fix hidden leaks Hidden leaks are one of the main culprits of water waste. The average family of four in our country uses 400 gallons of water each day. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, up to 10 percent of homes have easy-to-fix leaks that waste at least 90 gallons a day. In fact, a toilet leak could be wasting about 200 gallons of water daily. A simple fix with a few tools and parts from the hardware store could solve the problem. A degraded toilet flapper can use the same water as leaving a faucet running at a constant stream. To check for a leaky flapper, put a drop of food coloring in the toilet tank and wait 10 minutes.
