Celtic Bayou Festival celebrates Irish culture BY CLAIRE SALINAS

Special to The Advocate When Tony and Sheila Davoren met while working as a singer and dancer, respectively, for the show Riverdance, they had no idea they would fall in love and bring that same culture to Lafayette. The Celtic Bayou Festival is a family affair for the Davorens, with Tony acting as co-organizer alongside Sheila, and providing musical entertainment through his band Celjun. Their children, 14-year-old Roisin, 13-year-old Aoife, and 9-year-old Malachy, will perform Irish dancing, and Malachy will play the bodhran, an Irish drum during the festival. The Davoren children will show off their talents alongside their peers at The Ryan School of Irish dance, also run by Sheila, and will range in age from four to mid-forties. This is the fourth year of the festival, and the two-day events is jam packed with Irish cultural activities. Mark Foley is a volunteer board member on the Celtic Bayou Festival committee, and president of the Acadian Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, an organization that claims to be the largest Irish Organization in the U.S. “Our members help organize and man the Friday night crawfish boil, the Genealogy Tent and hospitality area for all the performers,” said Foley. “We pride ourselves in the wide variety of Celtic bands at the event.” Some of this year’s musical acts will include Vishten from Canada, The Danny Burns Trio, Alan Murray from Scotland, and Andrew Finn Magill. Other festival activities include the Guinness cook off, which allows contestants to cook any dish they like as long as they use Guinness as an ingredient. Contestants can win through judges’ choice or the crowd driven taster’s choice. The Irish Language tent will give festival goers the opportunity to learn popular Irish phrases. “Much like our Cajun culture is a mixture of Cajun French and English, the Irish culture combines the Irish ancestral language with modern English,” said Sheila. “One example is ‘Craic,’

Festival goers enjoy the Friday night Celtic Bayou Festival crawfish boil kick off among family and friends. which translates to fun, which our festival promises loads of.” The event is put on purely by volunteer board members who do it for the love of spreading Irish culture. “We love the Celtic Bayou Festival because it is a family friendly way to honor St. Patrick and keep the Celtic traditions alive,” said Foley. Sheila hopes newcomers will have a chance to see the similarities between the Irish and Cajun culture throughout the event. “Whether Cajun or Irish, happiness is good food, good music and dancing into the night with your friends,” said Sheila. “Tony and I felt a deep connection when we first visited and later settled here. Our desire is for everyone to leave our festival feeling a kindred connection and just a wee bit more Irish than when they arrived.” The Celtic Bayou Fesitval will be Festival goers dance to the beat of festival co-organizer, Tony Davoren’s band, Celjun, during the Friday night festival kick off. St. Patrick’s Day is a festive occasion marked by parades, live music and, gatherings of friends and neighbors – Irish or not. Hosting a St. Patrick’s Day party is a big responsibility. In addition to the color green, a host may want to make sure party planning includes these musthaves.

Beer For many revelers, St. Patrick’s Day wouldn’t be the same without Guinness, which is among Ireland’s most famous exports. This world renowned and easily recognizable Irish dry stout traces its origins to 1758, when Arthur Guinness began creating it at his brewery at St. James’s Gate in Dublin. The black beer and its familiar white head instantly evoke images of Ireland for millions of people across the globe. While hosts outside of Ireland might not be able to find a keg of the black stuff for their Paddy’s Day party, it is widely available in cans.

Food Corned beef and cabbage might not be the most authentic Irish meal, but it’s become synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and therefore earned its place on your Paddy’s Day menu. Hosts can start the day off right by whipping up a pre-parade traditional Irish breakfast, complete with eggs, Irish bacon, white and black pudding, and brown bread. A closer look at how tax law changes apply to homeowners With tax season upon us, homeowners are reminded about recent changes to the tax code that went into effect in 2018. Despite the changes, it’s important to remember that homeowners can still take advantage of many tax incentives. Homeowners who itemize their federal income tax deductions can deduct 100 percent of their mortgage interest payments on a first and second home, up to a maximum mortgage amount of $750,000 for loan balances taken after Dec. 16, 2017. The limit remains $1 million for mortgages that were established prior to this date, as well as for homeowners who were under contract before Dec. 15, 2017, subject to certain rules. Taxpayers can also deduct up to $10,000 of state and local taxes, including property taxes and the choice of income or sales taxes. Plus, households can take a deduction on a home equity loan or home equity line of credit if the loan is used for substantial home improvements, such as remodeling. And when they decide to sell their home, many homeowners do not have to pay capital gains tax on profits from the sale. Married

couples who have owned and occupied their principal residence for at least two of the past five years do not have to pay any taxes on the first $500,000 in profits from the sale of their home. For single filers, the first $250,000 in profits will be tax free. Mortgage insurance premiums offer another potential deduction for homeowners. Generally, people who purchase a home without putting 20 percent down must buy mortgage insurance, and those premiums can also be deducted from taxable income. Buying and owning a home can offer significant tax savings. Many homeowners rely on these benefits to help offset the costs of homeownership, while prospective buyers take them into consideration as an advantage over renting. It’s important to keep in mind that the tax law did create important changes that could impact individuals and small businesses. You should always consult a qualified professional adviser for questions about filing your tax returns.
