Front porches making a comeback

There’s nothing as Norman Rockwell Americana as the front porch, brought to this country as a design element and status symbol by the British. Abraham Lincoln liked to smoke a pipe and play the harmonica on his. Although the concept of a porch has existed since prehistoric times, the portico, the ancestor of all porches, originated in ancient Greece as a formal framing device to create the appearance of authority. Porches later became de rigueur during summers temperatures in the South, and were built to provide shade and take advantage of much-needed breezes. Later versions became the full-length, wrap-around verandahs, shading the house’s interior and allowing for windows to be left open in the rain. What was once a symbol of wealth, status, and necessary climate control later became a link to the community, providing not only a cool alternative to the stuffiness indoors, but allowing the family to move to the front porch and engage with others. Children played in the front yard while adults relaxed from their daily labors, and generations of couples courted under the watchful eyes of parents. Several factors contributed to the porch’s functional fall from grace. The increasing noise and exhaust fumes

porch can still accommodate some company. A pair of chairs or swing, good lighting, a fan, and even outdoor curtains are also good. • Do not bring electronics out on the porch. News and media have made us hyperaware.” That said, Foster explains the advent of traditional neighborhood developments, or TND’s for short, has slowly invited people more to the front yard. “I see people now again in River Ranch on their porches,” she said. Foster personally chooses to live in an older house with a front porch that she utilizes on a daily basis. “In my neighborhood, Sterling Grove, front porches are the norm,” she said. “We use our porch all the time. We’re a block off the Mardi Gras route and close to Festival International downtown. My husband is from New Orleans, and I lived there also for several years. We enjoy being outside and one with the city.” “And continuing the tradition.”

COMING UP IN IBERIA PARISH Architectural design tour features mid-’50s to late-’60s NEW IBERIA — The Louisiana Architecture Foundation is partnering with the Iberia Cultural Resources Association and the Iberia Parish Convention and Visitors Bureau, to showcase modern-styled homes in New Iberia. The tour will highlight the mid-’50s to late-’60s in exterior architecture design. The self-guided tour takes place Saturday, June 1, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Seven sites will be open to tour including six open homes and a modern-styled church. This tour serves as a fundraiser to support both the LAF and ICRA. “We think that the Modern Tour of Homes in New Iberia will showcase unique hidden gems from the standpoints of both architecture and interiors,” says ICRA president Cathy Indest. Tickets can be purchased online at LouisianaArchitecture.org/Events or in person at Bayou Teche Museum starting May 23 on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays during normal museum hours. The museum will also serve as ticket headquarters for check-in for attendees and to purchase “day of” tickets. Advance ticket can be purchased on-

line fpr $30 ($25 for members of LAF and ICRA). Tickets purchased on tour day are $35 ($30 members of LAF/ ICRA). Tickets for the tour plus a VIP reception are $55 ($50 members of LAF/ ICRA). Jump start spring with these tasks Check for needed repairs, inside and out, before hot weather Warmer weather and longer daylight are here, making it an ideal time to check on areas in your house and yard that may need attention. Once you tend to the wear and tear from winter, you’ll be ready to sit back and enjoy your home when spring is fully underway. The following list will help get you started.

Outdoors • Walk around the entire perimeter of your home and check the condition of any glazing compound, caulk, and exterior paint. Replace or touch up wherever needed. • Inspect your deck. Replace any popped nails and re-secure loose boards. Check for boards that are decaying and need to be updated. Sweep and gently clean the decking material. If your deck is made of wood, you may need to reseal it. To determine if your deck needs to be resealed, try sprinkling the surface with water and let it stand. If the water soaks in, it is time to reseal to protect the wood from future rain and humidity. • Wipe down or hose off your outdoor furniture. Check cushions to see if they need cleaning, repair or

Indoors • Hire a professional to clean and inspect your air conditioning sys-

tem. If it has a filter, make sure it’s been replaced within the last three months to keep everything working efficiently. • Test your windows to see if they open and close properly. If you have window screens, gently wash them with soapy water. If not, install screens and storm doors for added protection from the elements. • Refresh carpets and rugs from outdoor debris tracked in from boots over the winter. A good cleaning will freshen the look of the whole house. • Prepare your screened porch or sunroom to handle outdoor allergens. If your porch takes in a significant amount of pollen when spring is in full swing, cover furniture until pollen season is over. When you’re ready to open windows, carefully remove the sheets coated with pollen. • Find signs of termites early. These insects are one of the most harmful household pests. Warm weather brings out termites. Check for sagging floors and ceilings and note any dry, brown tunnels in the ground near your home’s foundation. Eliminating terminates now can save you money in the future.
