Azalea Trail Revitalization Project takes root

The azaleas may be nearly gone, but Denise Lanclos is just getting started. At the forefront of the Azalea Trail Revitalization Project for a year-anda-half, Lanclos grew up in Whittington Oaks by Fatima. “I used to do the Azalea Trail Run up and down St. Mary,” she said. “I love the beauty of Lafayette.” She also wants to preserve it. “We’ve done a lot this winter. I went out in the community, and we raised $31,000 from private donations. Everyone loves what we’re doing. On Coolidge Boulevard, they have to consider city guidelines, bidding, landscaping and irrigation, but it’s in the processing stage.” Lafayette is one of only 15 Certified Azalea Cities by the Azalea Society of America. Since the 1930s, the trail has attracted thousands of visitors annually to enjoy the blooms. Still a top tourist attraction, the Azalea committee wants to preserve the trail for the next generation. The initiative is part of Scenic Lafayette, whose mission is to enhance the environment of Lafayette for the local economy, tourism, and quality of life in general. Since 2015, the Azalea Committee has partnered with the Lafayette Convention and Visitors Center, the Downtown Development Authority, the Preservation Alliance of Lafayette, Keep Lafayette Beautiful and Project Front Yard to restore the Trail. Passionate about the urban core where she grew up, Lanclos studies how other “floral” cities manage, such as the cherry blossom plantings in Washington D.C. She particularly admires Mobile, and would like to see Lafayette broaden into a Garden District. To date in Acadiana, Vermilionville, Acadian Village, Fatima, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Angelle Hall, the Alumni House, Girard Park, and Lafayette Middle School have all been the recipients of common azalea varieties. All it takes is modernization — and money. The oldest dwelling in Lafayette, the Mouton House was built in the early 1800s by Vermilionville founder Jean Mouton. Its ongoing preservation is a challenge for its conservators and undertaking the ongoing azalea revitalization is a grounds committee, currently headed Lisa Chance. Considered by many to be the quintessential Southern plant, azaleas like living near or beneath trees, yet they still need enough sun to flower. Once established, they are low maintenance provided they get enough water without their roots remaining wet. Chance says the grounds committee has conquered a few of the problems, one of which was solved by a hose sys-

In the future, she hopes to expand azaleas across another side yard. “The grounds have really blossomed,” she said. “They’re beautiful to walk around.” “When the flowers produce, I’m happy.”
