Henderson: Gateway to the Atchafalaya BY CHERÉ COEN
Special to The Advocate Henderson’s a town most people associate with Pat’s Fisherman’s Wharf restaurant, swamp tours off the levee road fronting the Atchafalaya Basin or an I-10 exit to enjoy Landry’s Seafood House and the Louisiana Marketshops. But the small town mostly populated after the 1927 flood and the building of the Atchafalaya Basin levee has much to offer for those wanting a home with friendly people, the great outdoors and a chance to know their neighbors. Just ask Ginger Latiolais, a tour planner and travel agent who hails from Henderson but moved away for many years only to return home. We followed Latiolais as she gave us a tour of the area and she was greeted by an endless stream of relatives and friends. “The greatest asset of Henderson is its people,” Latiolais said. “People always come back. It’s community. We’re all connected.” And yes, the community remains very small, although the town’s large enough for a city hall with Mayor Sherbin Collette presiding and the Henry Guidry Memorial Park where several festivals and special events are held. Addresses claim Breaux Bridge since the nearest full post office lies several miles down the road, but Henderson offers an auxiliary post office, grocery and a few fast food outlets because of its proximity to the interstate, not to mention churches. What makes Henderson special, however, might be the lack of modern city conveniences. Several fish markets and Pat’s sell right-off-the-line seafood at their processing buildings. Locally owned Champagne’s Bakery, dating back to 1888, serves up delicious hot donuts and other breakfast treats early in the morning and their famous pink cookies and decorative cakes all day. Community Healthcare Center and several pharmacies allow residents to receive care without traveling to Breaux Bridge or Lafayette (although both are a short drive away) and the many restaurants and attractions keep folks busy and happy. So much has sprung up in this sleepy town in recent years. Cajun Palms RV Resort opened 11 years ago and continues to grow, offering 65 rental cabins and

The Marketshops is one of the biggest stores in Henderson, which is well-known for tours of the Atchafalaya Basin. 371 RV slots, not to mention the massive pool area, volleyball court and endless year-round events, such as cookouts, concerts and RV rallies. Plans are in the works for additional accommodations and a new adult-only pool. Next door is the 68,000-square-foot Cajun Fast Track, providing a wealth of entertainment from laser tag to go karts and the Prehistoric Park where visitors walk through a simulated jungle with dinosaurs lurking in the woods. For those who love the outdoors swamp tours and other ways to get on the water abound down the Henderson Levee Road. The Atchafalaya Basin Landing specializes in airboat excursions and McGee’s
Swamp Tour includes airboats, covered pontoons and canoes. Both take visitors into the Basin where alligators, resident and migratory birds and other critters may be viewed. Restaurants run the gamut but most specialize in the seafood caught in the Atchafalaya Basin. Pat’s remains the oldest restaurant by far, founded in 1948 by Pat Huval, Henderson’s first mayor. Pat’s now includes a massive dance hall featuring regular live music and an 18-room hotel. On the north side of I-10, General Manager and Chef Joey Ledet serves up Cajun favorites — he’s Cajun himself — at Landry’s Seafood, the original restaurant of the now national chain. Next door,
Nabih Qaisieh cooks up a wide variety of plate lunch favorites, such as fried chicken, alligator and catfish, at Chicken on the Bayou and Boudin Shop. Nearby, Crawfish Town USA packs in the visitors, especially during crawfish season, with its lengthy menu of seafood dishes. This year, the I-10 roundabout opened, which has taken some residents a little getting used to, but now it’s easy to exit the interstate and roll easily to either north and south eateries. For those who want to visit the unique Cajun town, the Holiday Inn Express at Exit 115 routinely wins awards in customer service. There’s even a resident cat!

Metro Media When tending to their lawns, homeowners are advised to pay attention to areas that may feature standing water. According to the World Health Organization, standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes, which can breed in great numbers in pools of water. Mosquitoes are known to carry diseases like malaria, West Nile virus and Zika. Mosquitoes that bite pets can transmit heartworms, a serious problem if it goes undiscovered. Standing water also can be a haven for bacteria, mold and parasites that are dangerous to human health. If standing, stagnant water is a problem in your yard, remediation is necessary. Directing downspouts away from the house can remediate standing water. Changing the grading of soil so that low spots are elevated is another way to reduce instances of standing water. This may be a project that requires the assistance of a drainage professional. Homeowners can remove standing water from empty ďŹ&#x201A;ower pots, pool covers, bird baths, and more to reduce the likelihood that mosquitoes will appear on their properties.

Prepare now to buy a home this spring If spring looks like the time you’ll be buying a new home, now may seem be too soon to start trying to pin down a specific property. But with a few months to go, it’s time to lay the groundwork. After all, you’ll need to get your finances in shape, know how to get your best deal on a mortgage, and figure out where, within your budget, you want to live. These things take time, but start now and by the end of winter you’ll be ready to house hunt and then spring into action when you find “the one.”

Work out your own price range based on what the calculators say. Do those monthly payments look reasonable or like a stretch? Do you expect your monthly expenses to rise, maybe because of a planned car purchase? How long do you expect to stay in this house? Is it worth a bit of a stretch because you plan to stay more than five to seven years? Or would you be more comfortable keeping payments at a lower level? To determine how much you’ll have for a down payment, assess what you have in hand and what you can realistically save between now and spring. Don’t forget there will be closing costs. Down payment calculators will show how much you need for each down payment percentage required for different types of mortgage.
