Greauxing native Bringing back plants from Louisiana’s natural heritage attracts pollinators BY CHERÉ COEN

Special to The Advocate A vast prairie of native grasses, wildflowers and trees stretched west of the Atchafalaya Basin before Europeans arrived in South Louisiana. Settlers brought with them agriculture and grazing domesticated animals, transforming the landscape. Today, we assume the plants and trees surrounding our homes belong here, but many are cultivated species, non-native plants designed to look pretty and functional but offer little to the local environment, said Phyllis Griffard, president of the Acadiana Native Plant Project. The nonprofit organization’s mission is to promote the use of native plants in Acadiana’s landscape, Griffard said, plants that need little attention or mulch, come back year after year and attract birds, bees, hummingbirds, butterflies and wildlife. “If you’re going to put something in your yard, it needs to go to work,” Griffard explained, adding that oak trees host 500 species of moss and butterfly larvae. “You can create ecosystems in your own backyard.” Griffard, a biology professor at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, admits finding native plants can be daunting as many nurseries don’t sell or carry few natives. Acadiana Native Plant Project propagates and sells many native species from its greenhouse in Arnaudville and at special events, such as today’s Herb Festival in Sunset. Natives also take time to develop, Griffard said, so it may be best to introduce native plants in stages throughout a landscape. “Native gardening generally takes three years,” she explained, adding that while on top of the soil little is happening a massive system of roots are developing underground. “First year it sleeps. Second year it creeps. Third

year it leaps.” For homeowners with a blank slate or who want to replace non-natives with indigenous plants, Griffard suggests creating first a landscape plan. For trees, incorporate natives such as mulberry, sweet bay magnolia and oaks instead of crepe myrtles, which aren’t native. Think of what goals you wish to achieve with native plants. flies? Do you want to plant edibles such as fruit and berries? Does your landscape need water management or have shade issues? Then add natives in stages. “Think of the bigger picture,” Griffard said. “Don’t buy things from the store just because it’s pretty. A simple thing to do is to put in plants to attract pollinators.” Lawns are a modern landscape feature and need water, fertilizer and gas for mowing. Griffard suggests minimalizing lawn space unless it’s needed for a specific purpose such as a children’s play space.

“One easy solution is to create a little prairie,” she said. “It can be little or it can be big. But place a boundary around it to keep it neat and the neighbors happy.” For native plant ideas, property owners can visit demonstration gardens such as the one ANPP grows in Arnaudville, the Lafayette Parish Master Gardener’s demo gardens by Blackham Coliseum and the Urban Prairie plot on the UL campus. Landscape consultants and horticulturists can be hired to help plan and create native gardens as well. Some native plants to consider adding to your garden are:

• Woody trees such as live oaks, sweet bay magnolia and mulberry • Native hibiscus such as Texas Star, marsh mallows and Turk’s cap • Colorful wildflowers such as purple coneflowers, Rudbeckia and Stokes aster • Passion and trumpet vines or coral honeysuckle • Louisiana and copper irises but “stay away from the yellow ones because they were introduced,” Griffard said. ANPP sells natives from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesdays at their greenhouse, 1046 Main Highway in Arnaudville, through the end of May. The organization fosters out plants during the summer because of the heat. ANPP will also be selling natives today (May 4) at the Sunset Herb Festival. What home buyers need to know about home inspections The home buying process is both exciting and overwhelming at the same time. Even with the help of professionals, your checklist is likely long. And one of the most important items that should be at the top of your list is scheduling a home inspection. Although not required by law, many lenders do require a home inspection, which helps protect the large investment you are about to make. It’s important to learn as much as you can about the physical condition of the home before you buy it, to ensure it’s a sound investment. And while an inspection cannot guarantee the condition of a home, the inspector can alert you to items that need repair or any safety concerns. Here are a few things to keep in mind about the home inspection process.

It is important that you be thorough and observant during the walk-through. Examine the surfaces of counters, fixtures, floors and walls carefully for possible damage. Sometimes disputes arise because a buyer may discover a gouge in a counter top after move-in, and there is no way to prove whether it was caused by the builder’s workers or the buyer’s movers.
