Jefferson Island’s unlikely tie to Rip Van Winkle Attractions include semi-tropical gardens, conference center

Special to The Advocate In the 19th century, American actor Joseph Jefferson, widely known for his role as Rip Van Winkle in the play he adapted from Washington Irving’s short story, fell in love with a tract of land called “Orange Island” near New Iberia, so named because it sits on top of a coastal salt dome forcing the land to protrude above the surrounding area. Jefferson built his Victorian home in 1870 at the highest point of the property, providing a dramatic view of Lake Peigneur. Because of his fame as an actor, Jefferson hosted many notable people at the home, including President Grover Cleveland who liked to nap beneath an ancient live oak tree. The property was also thought to contain the treasure of pirate Jean Lafitte and a chest of silver and gold coins were found beneath twin live oak trees by the main house. After Jefferson’s death, the property was sold to John Lyle Bayless of Kentucky who began to mine the salt beneath the ground. His son, John Bayless Jr., later developed the Rip Van Winkle Gardens, 15 acres of semi-tropical gardens, surrounding the mansion. “Nothing in the gardens is original to the Jefferson family but some of the oak trees, which are hundreds of years old,” said Nick Delcambre, Jefferson Island marketing and communications manager. “Rip’s Oak by the café is more than 300 years old.” Today, the property is open for tours, including the Joseph Jefferson Mansion, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, a gift shop and Acadian cottages for overnight stays. Café Jefferson serves lunch daily next to the gift shop, serving up Cajun and Creole dishes with a lovely view of the lake. The Bayless Conference Center on the grounds accommodates 25 to 300 with a fully equipped kitchen, making it ideal for special events. With the lake at sunset and the elaborate gardens, Jefferson Island has become a popular wedding destination.

“We’ve been voted on by several community organizations as the best wedding venue,” Delcambre said. Tours of the mansion are offered at the top of the hour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, which includes walk-throughs of the gardens at visitors’ leisure. Tickets are $12 adults, $10 for ages 66 and over and $6 for children. The property also contains Rip’s Rookery, a bird sanctuary that’s home to egrets, spoonbills and other South Louisiana birds. Jefferson Island was once the site of one of the strangest environmental disasters in Louisiana history. On Nov. 20, 1980, drilling at the top of the salt dome punctured the outer wall causing Lake Peigneur to pour into the dome. The disaster caused a 150-foot waterfall into the puncture site and the nearby Delcambre Canal to flow backwards before the lake literally disappeared.
