Summertime, and livin’ is easy. That is, unless you have a child who’s out of school and needs occupying. Good solutions are hard to find, but there are two top-notch organizations to the rescue. The Acadiana Center for the Arts is one of them. “We’ve been doing summer camps since we opened the building 14 years ago,” said Bree Sargent, education director for the AcA. “The purpose is to offer those particularly interested in the arts someplace to go. Some camps are technique based, like color theory, shading, and illustration. They vary year to year, and each is different. This year we have printmaking for the first time, we’re excited about that. It’s not your everyday.” Sargent manages all the kid-related programs including those in conjunction with the Lafayette Parish schools. “Our teaching artists already have experience with children. They have so much fun.” Geared for ages 6-14, each week-long camp has a theme, such as In Search of Buried Treasure, the printmaking camp, and City Life: Drawing & Painting, which will incorporate urban planning and perspective in addition to downtown walkabouts. Some are less specific for those who simply want to explore, like Young Masters, where children can experiment with basic techniques. In Passport to the Arts, campers get acquainted with a different country through its art, for instance, Frida Kahlo, and create some pieces inspired by the history, geography and culture of that location. “We’ve been doing Drawing and Painting for many years because people love it,” said Sargent. “We have a lot of people who come back over and over again. Most of the programs are visual arts, but we’ve added a movement class, “Moving in Space.” It’s not dance lessons, but more exploratory.” For the not-quite-school-aged, there’s The Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum and Olivia Morgan, who plans programs for K-12. For the young ones, it’s a focus on quality time for parents and children together. “It’s not easy to find opportunities that are affordable,” said Morgan, daughter of renowned artist Elmore Morgan. “All of our

Our train set is out.” Geared toward ages 2-4, everyone has time to socialize. “We anticipate siblings, so infant and older is perfectly fine. We’re pretty open to families coming, but they must sign up online. It’s free, but we limit to 25.” Morgan says while UAM doesn’t run its own summer camps per se, they welcome others. “We program others’ summer camps and take in theirs. UL’s summer camp for kids comes to us, as do church camps. They start calling and scheduling around March and April. That’s how we serve. We can have quite a few coming in, and summer’s actually kind of busy. We still have openings for summer camp coordinators – it’s $2 each for admission, $75 per 25 with activity. Our big event is Play Day, and the summer one is July 20, 10-2, focusing on drawing.” Sketch, Scribble, Doodle always has visiting teaching artists, for instance, children’s illustrator Denise Gallagher, and a mix of gallery activities, such as a scavenger hunt. Children also learn to feel comfortable in the museum. “I know we’ll have some fun,” said Morgan. “It’s a great day for ages 0 to 99. Not just to serve children, but encourage intergenerational play. And take home some art techniques.”

Prepare your home for hurricane season As storm season approaches, the likelihood of hurricanes increases. Powerful storms that bring heavy rains and flood can wreak havoc on your property. To help preserve one of your most important investments and your loved ones, consider taking the following proactive steps.

Any item in the front or back of your home can instantly turn into a flying object and create more damage to your or your neighbor’s property.
