New Iberia, Queen of Culture

Cathy Indest talks of New Iberia with a passion generally reserved for the home team. President of the Iberia Cultural Resources Association, she actually is part of a civic team that includes the Bayou Teche Museum and Shadows on the Teche. Together they cheerlead for the entire town. “This is a remarkable community,” she said. “That’s why we say we’re Queen. We have so many events.” New Iberia encompasses two officially designated cultural districts, downtown and the West End. A cultural district is traditionally conceived as a well-recognized, labeled, mixed-use area of a settlement in which a high concentration of cultural facilities serves as the main attraction. It is designated by a local governing authority for the purpose of revitalizing a community. According to Preserve Louisiana, by Louisiana law a Cultural District must: • Be geographically contiguous • Be distinguished by cultural resources that play a vital role in the life and cultural development of a community • Focus on an existing cultural anchor such as a major art institution, art and entertainment businesses, an area or business with arts and cultural activities or cultural or artisan production • Be engaged in the promotion, preservation, and educational aspects of the arts and culture of the locale • Contribute to the public through interpretive and educational uses • Encourage opportunity for affordable artist housing and work space The coalition stages two main events per year, the Books along the Teche Festival and Beneath the Balconies. “We second line from one performance balcony to the next,” said Indest. “They are unbelievable, and there’s food and music beforehand. Home to author James Lee Burke of Detective Dave Robichaux fame as well as renowned Blue Dog artist

Begun three years ago by Jerome Weber, the Shadows on the Teche Plein Air Competition takes place in March and now draws artists from California to Quebec. Patterned after one Weber saw in Maryland, The Shadows was the only organization who responded to his proposal and Plein Air Magazine helped him with the structure. “That’s just a few of the many cultural events,” said Indest. “They’re working on a marine and kayak dock that will use the Bayou.” The bayou flows through the middle of downtown, and will provide to tourists all of the amenities that the city of New Iberia has to offer. Nature and wildlife lovers can enjoy exploring the Bayou Teche Corridor region of the heritage area, a unique river swamp eco-system with a variety of fish species, birds, alligators and black bear. The Teche is a 135-milelong waterway of great cultural significance in south central Louisiana in the United States, and New Iberia’s dock is one of several either proposed or installed along the waterway. Adjacent to the New Iberia National Register Commercial Historic District at the base of the Duperier Street Bridge, the basic components are a floating dock structure, an elevated pathway to the dock, kiosk signage identifying the historic nature of the park, paddling trail signage and benches. The signage is near and dear to Indest. Her mother put up the first bilingual plaques. “I felt a need to finish revitalizing the project,” she said. With Iberia Cultural Resources Association celebrating 50 years, there will be 21 trilingual historical plaques about the buildings and events. “We’re the only ones in the U.S. whose plaques are in three languages.” “One well-traveled gentleman who’d
been all over the world said he’d never seen such hospitality,” said Indest. “And how many have an antebellum home downtown? New Iberia is the only city other than Lafayette that has more than one symphony concert every year. We have four. And they’re free through the Iberia Cultural Resources Association.” “We make sure we support one another.” Mayor Freddie DeCourt has been a staunch supporter of New Iberia’s cultural districts. “I’m very proud,” he said. “It’s afforded us up to a 40 percent tax credit and has paid really good dividends. We have an inquiry and a new developer at least once a month.” Decourt, who has a background in historic preservation, has been mayor for 2 1/2 years. “The cultural district designation has also allowed access to a couple of million dollars in grants — the George Rodrigue Park, a marina, we’re constantly looking for ways. It’s meant nothing but opportunity.”

Top home features boomers want Older buyers prefer the suburbs, smaller homes than millenials seek
Baby boomers have a few distinct preferences when it comes to home location and features, according to a recent survey from the National Association of Home Builders. The survey asked first-time buyers and existing homeowners across different age groups to rank features based on how essential they are to a home-purchasing decision. Boomer home buyers overwhelmingly preferred to live in the suburbs compared to other age groups. When asked about community features, boomers want to be near retail space. They also had a strong preference to live in a pedestrian-friendly community with walking/jogging trails and a park area. Compared to millennials, playgrounds and swimming pools are not popular community features for boomers. The survey revealed different preferences for home size across age groups. Older buyers preferred a smaller house with high-quality products and amenities compared to millennial home buyers. Only a few older home buyers in the survey preferred a home with
more than one story, compared to a majority of younger home buyers. There also were striking differences between age groups when asked about bath and specialty rooms. Nearly half of older home buyers consider a full bath on the main level essential, compared to less than a third of younger home buyers. A significant percentage of older home buyers did not want a whirlpool tub, skylight or dual toilets in the master bath, compared to younger home buyers. Specialty rooms associated with entertainment, such as a media or game room, appeal less to boomers compared to millennials. Although most home buyers in each generation consider energy efficiency an essential or desirable home feature, this preference increases significantly with age. A majority of millennials (76 percent) want ENERGY STAR-rated windows in their homes, compared to an overwhelming majority of boomers (91 percent).
