Cures for boredom close to home Lafayette has lots for children to do while school is out for the summer

Special to The Advocate Summer’s here, and school’s out for most children. To pacify the endless exclamations of “I’m bored” or to pull young faces away from digital screens, we’ve compiled a list of fun things for children to do in Acadiana.

Museums Lafayette is home to numerous museums, including downtown’s Children’s Museum of Acadiana and the Lafayette Science Museum. Both offer ongoing and revolving exhibits, hands-on educational and entertaining displays, summer programming and special events. The Lafayette Science Museum includes a planetarium, where visitors can observe the night sky and learn about space in an air-conditioned auditorium. Zoosiana, the Zoo of Acadiana, is home to more than 750 animals and 130 species and is open daily year-

round. Children may enjoy the feeding stations, the Safari Express train ride, petting zoo and zoo keeper talks.

The Fast Track For those who need a good thrill, there are several family centers in Acadiana offering amusement. Kart Ranch Family Fun Center features go karts, an arcade, rock wall for climbing, adventure golf and fun for the little ones. If kids want to get wet, the bumper boats are a unique take on bumper cars. OverinHenderson,the68,000-squarefoot Cajun Fast Track includes an XD Theatre, billiards, laser tag and go karts, to name only a few. In addition, there’s the fun Filling Station restaurant and a Fender Bender lounge for adults. Next door to Cajun Fast Track, dinosaurs lurk in the simulated jungle at Prehistoric Park. Water sports require an ability to get on the water but Cable X Cables puts visitors on its 20-acre manmade lake

Girard Park is one of the places parents can take children who need something to break up the summer duldrums. to enjoy wakeboarding. In addition, there’s a separate lake for paddling, a volleyball court, camper hookups and plenty of green space for picnics. Don’t forget the old-fashioned fun of bowling and roller and ice skating. In some cases, kids are admitted free. “You just sign up then they send you coupons each week for free skate and bowl times when kids can go free,” said Chere Breaux of Lafayette. “You rent the skates or shoes or bring your own. And pay for parents if you participate.”

The Children’s Museum of Acadiana has summer programs in addition to ongoing and revolving exhibits designed to educate and entertain children.

Research has shown that getting children outdoors provides a wealth of health beneﬁts, not to mention that hiking through woods, paddling among alligators and viewing wildlife is a whole lot of fun. Children can enjoy six miles of hiking trails through different ecosystems and over and alongside bayous at the Acadiana Park Nature Station. There’s a canoe launch there as well. Lake Martin in nearby St. Martin Parish, only a short drive from Lafayette, offers hiking trails alongside the lake’s bird rookeries and a visitor’s center that explains the wildlife that call Lake Martin home. Visitors may spot alligators, nutria, raccoons and a host of vis-

iting and resident birds. If you want to stay close to home, visit a Lafayette city park where fun ranges from organized sports to feeding the ducks at Girard Park.

Freebies The Lafayette Public Library hosts a summer reading program every year — this year’s theme is “A Universe of Stories” — and special programming is offered every week at the parish libraries, through August. Children of all ages may choose from magic shows and performances to crafts and space movies. For those who join the program and read the required number of books, prizes are offered. When it’s hot, money’s tight and there’s no pool to enjoy, kids (and adults too) can run in and out of the syncopated Parc San Souci fountain at 201 E. Vermilion Street in downtown Lafayette. The fountain’s on constantly, unless dangerous weather approaches. After a hot day, Todd Billiot takes his kids to the water play area at Parc Lafayette, located on Kaliste Saloom by River Ranch. As the home building industry celebrates National Homeownership Month in June, new data from the National Association of Home Builders reveal that starting in 2019, a majority of senior (56 percent) and millennial (50 percent) buyers have moved beyond planning to purchase a home to actually starting the search process. The NAHB Housing Trends Report reveals that millennials expect house hunting to become easier in the months ahead. The data dispel the misconception that millennials view home buying as a burdensome process. The national homeownership rate is on an upward trend, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The number of U.S. households increased to 122.3 million in the ﬁrst quarter of 2019, 1.5 million higher than a year ago.

An important step in financing your home is selecting a lender and getting pre-approved for a loan. Some home builders offer financial incentives or can arrange favorable financing for their customers. When you know how much money you can borrow, this can help determine the price range that works for you. Lining up your financing will allow you to move quick if you are bidding on a house that has several interested buyers.

Prioritizing home features Before starting your house hunt, it is important to outline the home features that matter the most to you and your family. Talk to the members of your household and make a list of the top preferences in your home. You should also discuss the size and ﬂoor plan that best ﬁts the needs of your household. Another discussion point is the type of home that is suitable, such as a single-family home or condominium.

Building equity The benefits of homeownership are numerous. For many, owning a home is a positive step in creating a source of net worth. Home equity, the difference between the market value of your home and the mortgage debt you owe on it, for U.S. home owners has risen this year.
