Entrepreneur creates oasis at 1115 Jefferson BY PATRICIA GANNON fete@theadvocate.com

When there is a bridge between cultures, it is often built with food. Born in Hasaka, Syria, Nabil Loli came to Lafayette in 1978 at the age of 19. “I had a brother who lived here, a professor at UL,” said Loli. “I wanted to come to the U.S., so I applied for my visa. My parents came in 1980, then my whole family.” “It was perfectly planned, a good time. Lafayette was the land of opportunity.” The son of a businessman, Loli opened the shop in 1981. “There was no ethnic grocery or deli in Lafayette then. People used to drive to New Orleans or order from New York. There were a lot of Lebanese and students from Jordan, so I opened to serve them. Years later, the students graduated and left, then the locals started coming and looking for products. So I built a reputation.” “My focus gradually became Americans, which I like. Ninety-nine percent of my business is from locals now.” Loli credits his local clientele with his viability. “Why I’m still alive,” he said. “They learn cooking through the Open Channel and internet.” On any single day, Cedar Grocery & Deli has a sophisticated customer base: professionals, lawyers, academics, CODOFIL, artists. “It keeps me going,” he said. “In the beginning, anything is hard. It takes a lot of hard work. I give credit to my family — without their help, I would have been scared. I was 21. We made a lot of mistakes and learned from it.” Clearly those mistakes were quickly corrected and Loli’s story is one of prosperity and the American Dream. “Every summer now we travel — Lebanon, Istanbul, and Europe. My wife and I have a house in Lebanon, she goes before me to visit her family, and I close for three weeks. I can’t leave my business to others, I have to be here. When I come back, the place is packed.” Loli works 30 hours a week now, down from the 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. schedule, seven days a week he once had. He is closed Saturday and Sunday. He

He’s technically closed now as we speak, the closed sign in the window, but it doesn’t stop one determined lady who’s promised her family Lebanese food tonight. She rushes in for the ingredients for tabbouli. “These are the best grape leaves,” she said. “And the best garbanzos. We’ve got to keep him in business,” she laughed. “Sorry to interrupt.” Not long after, a gentleman comes in to pay his respects. A wealthy seafood importer now, it wasn’t always so. “I grew up poor,” he said. “One of six children, my father deserted us. I was just a kid and trying to get to my brother-in-law in Dallas to work. Nabil loaned me $35 for gas. I will never forget it.” Among the hookahs on a high shelf, surrounded by boxes of exotic flavored tobacco and teas, there are paintings in Cedar Grocery — one the portrait of a much-missed son. “I’m focusing on my art now, my four brothers were all artists,” he said. The late landscape painter and architect George Loli was one of them. “We all paint, I’ve painted since I came to Lafayette, and I have a collection of work, 40 years’ worth. I paint when I get home.” “The grocery gave me a source of income, but until now, I was too busy. Some people buy.” Farouk Shami in

Loli says it would take a lot of money to move him from his decades-old location. “It’s unique to go downtown. In Europe, the best restaurants are in the center of the city. I’m not moving.

I’m keeping the same fixtures, the same ambiance.” “We came here from necessity, and we struggled. Patience gets you what you want. God gave me enough. I’m stubborn, I’m going to make it here. And I did. Thanks to my customers.”

What type of real estate do you specialize in? Commercial and luxury homes. I like putting deals together. The bigger the deal and the more complex is a challenge that I like. I understand finance and have managed over $200 million dollars a year running my own oil and gas operating company and real estate company. I have made decisions on large investments in real estate so I know what the buyer or seller is thinking because I have been in their shoes. I have been there and understand the thought process they go through when they are making large investments in business property or residential property. What’s your advice for people selling (or buying) a house in today’s market? Taking into account the uncertain economy regarding the oil and gas business, I would recommend staying within the guidelines of a budget you can afford and buy a little less than what you want and leave a margin in case the economy changes. A conservative approach is recommended. Also, make sure you are working with someone who knows the market and can guide a client into the best buying or selling scenario. Sharing many years of experience I find is very helpful to a buyer or seller. Share some of your thoughts about the advantages of a home buyer/seller coming to you. The advantages of a buyer or seller coming to me is that I have handled hundreds of transactions over the last 42 years, and I am very knowledgeable about the Acadiana market. I treat each client as a family member and recommend decisions based on the same decisions I would make for myself if I was buying or selling.
