Special to The Advocate The city of Broussard dates to the founding of Acadiana by Louisiana pioneers, officially founded in 1884 and named for local merchant Valsin Broussard but originally called Cote Gelée, which means frozen hills due to its rolling terrain and the severe winter of 1784. Today, Broussard routinely remains one of the fastest growing modern cities in Louisiana. Broussard ranks high on lists naming the fast-growing cities in Louisiana. According to HomeSnacks, a website that combines data “into bite-sized articles” for the public’s understanding, Broussard is now the third fastest growing city in Louisiana, and saw an increase in population of 40.3 percent since 2010. No city property taxes, quality schools such as the new Martial F. Billeaud Elementary and Southside High and an improved fire rating makes Broussard attractive to homebuyers, said Mayor Ray Bourque. “With our recently improved fire rating and no city property tax, it simply costs less to live in Broussard, yet we offer more and will continue to do so,” Bourque said. Other city attributes include gigspeed internet service by Cox and new fiber optics lines being installed by Lafayette Utilities System, improved city services and the addition of new retail along La. Hwy. 90, which runs through the city, said Bourque. Because of its historic roots — the city contains 14 properties on the National Register of Historic Places, — residents will find a small town feel with the amenities of a larger city, Bourque explained. The Broussard Sports Complex at St. Julien Park offers youth recreational sports, a community park with splash pad, walking trails, tennis courts, pavilions and stocked ponds and is the site of many community events. Le Triomphe subdivision contains one of only two Louisiana golf courses to host a sanctioned PGA Tour event, the Chitimacha Louisiana Open. The town is also home to Zoosiana (Zoo of Aca-

events in December. Homes are affordable with average sales around $260,000, said Keller Williams real estate agent Lisa Day, and resident commutes into Lafayette, Youngsville and New Iberia are relatively short.

And commutes are set to improve, according to Bourque. On the horizon for Broussard is the $2.9 million phase two of the South Bernard Road extension, connecting Albertson Parkway to Broussard’s Main Street. “This new four-lane road will not only ease our residents’ commute but will also boost development along its route,” Bourque said. Other city developments include the Ridgeview Outfall Drainage Project to improve drainage in the historic area behind the police station and the installation of the Sgt. Patrick Williamson Memorial at the new roundabout on South Bernard Road and Fairfield Avenue. Williamson, a Broussard native, was killed in Afghanistan in 2009, said Bourque. The city recently completed a charrette titled “Envision Broussard” to develop a master plan to revitalize Broussard’s Main Street and historic downtown. “Broussard has experienced rapid population and development growth in the last decade and our downtown is an important part of sustainable growth,” Bourque said. “Improving our historic downtown will attract businesses to our city center, boosting the economy and enhancing the quality of life for our residents.” For more information on Broussard, visit www.cityofbroussard.com.
