Women entrepreneurs discover business synergy off Bertrand BY PATRICIA GANNON Contributing writer

Just off Bertrand and not far from University Hospital, an all-female enterprise is practicing their own brand of healing. Quietly tucked in the back away from traffic, amid chiropractors and other professional offices, Wellness Spa Studio could be the best-kept secret in Lafayette. Completely female-owned by Brenda Bertrand and Candace Carroll, the business operates as a collective, with individually-owned businesses under one roof — personal trainer, two massage therapists, aesthetician, and salon — but also offers other services such as infrared sauna, stress relief, and detox foot soaks. “July 1 was my one-year anniversary,” said Andree Gerami, owner of Andree Terese Salon. “I moved from Terry Allen Salon to create more atmosphere and privacy, to be able to offer clients wellness services aside from styling.” Gerami, who has 32 years’ experience in Lafayette, calls it a win-win. “I’ve worked at some wonderful places, but this is completely different. It frees you up. Salons would take a commission, here you rent the space.” “All of us are under the umbrella, we support each other. Each one brings something to the table.” “Candace and I were in business together already,” said co-owner Brenda Bertrand. “It was the idea of wanting to expand, wanting to offer more and taking over more space. We could help other women come in with their businesses.” Wellness Spa Studio aims to provide a path to wellness through better health and relaxation in a comfortable environment. The goal is to help clients find inner peace while escaping stress, that health, wellness and beauty are intricately linked. There are five altogether: Bertrand has her own business as does her partner, personal trainer and masseuse Candace Carroll, Gerami, Jennifer Malambri, and Terese Maraist. “We weren’t in a rush, we were going to wait and let God’s hand be in it,” said Bertrand. “Energy’s important. Anyone new needs to work with everyone else.”

“It’s not about collecting rent.” Gerami, who is also a Reiki practitioner, found Bertrand and Carroll on Facebook. “They posted two pictures and I knew.” “Synergy, everyone comes together. It’s wonderful, there’s a maturity,” she said. Co-owner Candace Carroll has nearly 20 years’ experience and clients that have been with her throughout most of those years. The first in Lafayette to be certified in ashiatsu oriental bar therapy, (Ashiatsu is a unique style of massage therapy in which the therapists “walks” on the client’s back, using gravity and their bare feet instead to apply pressure), she’s putting Nancy Hamilton today through her personal training paces. “I’ve been working out for a year,” said Hamilton. “She’s changed my life.” Among the other services offered are infrared sauna and ion cleanse detoxification. Unlike traditional saunas which operate at extremely high temperatures, infrared is a gentle and therapeutic heat that promotes relaxation and claims to achieve a deep-tissue sweat by heating the body directly and causing a rise in temperature. It is also purported to assist with weight loss and muscle and joint pain, such as that accompanying fibromyalgia. Ion cleanse detoxification is commonly practiced in homeopathic practices and spas. The theory underlying its use involves ions that draw toxins out of the body, typically using a footbath. According to alternative healing websites, proponents of ion cleanse detoxification report improvements in certain health conditions, including edema, gout and joint pain. Acne sufferers also describe a lessening in the severity of breakouts, and advocates claim a boost in energy levels. (Note: Not all services are suitable for clients with certain conditions.) Thus far, there have been no insurmountable obstacles in the all-female work environment. “If something comes up we find a solution and move on,” said Bertrand. “We’re defying the stigma that women can’t work together.” “We work as a team. We have a good fit here.”
