Cultural districts make downtown a destination BY PATRICIA GANNON Contributing writer

Clearly Dirk Guidry at Basin Arts is sitting pretty. Located at 113 Clinton, Basin Arts, a combination gallery/studio venue, enjoys the benefits of Lafayette’s downtown historical cultural district as well as Freetown’s newly approved designation as a cultural district. Lieutenant Gov. Billy Nungesser and the Office of Cultural Development’s Division of the Arts, Freetown Port Rico, announced earlier this week that Freetown is officially a cultural district as of July 2019. Through certification as a Cultural District, these areas benefit from two tax incentives — rehabilitation of older buildings and the sale of qualifying works of original art sold within the district, with the latter exempt from local sales tax. The Cultural District Program allows a local government to designate a cultural district for the purpose of revitalizing a community by creating a hub of cultural activity. It also requires local governments who designate such districts to report on the impact annually. It is administered by the Louisiana Department of Culture. Approved Cultural Districts can apply for state tax credits for revitalization projects. In turn, the incentives for cultural activity are expected to result in increased commerce and development, a greater sense of community identity, and more artistic and cultural production. “The establishment of these new cultural districts is an example of the CREATE Initiative working with the State to enhance the impact of our cultural economy. With historic state tax credits now available, developers are already reaching out to us about redevelopment in these districts,” said Mayor-President Joel Robideaux. Another benefit of the designation is that businesses are eligible to exempt local sales tax for original artwork sold within the designated districts “We pay state tax, we don’t pay the city tax on original art work,” explained Guidry, who will soon be hosting a public discussion for CREATE Initiative. “I’m going to represent the visual arts

There’s an app in the works, and all of the arts can submit their assets to a process of evaluating.” The eventual goal is one landing site and asset inventory. To get needed public input, a Community Discussion about Arts in Lafayette Parish will be July 30 at 5 p.m. at the Acadiana Center for the Arts. “We ﬁgured out the important driving mechanism is clearly our culture. It’s of the utmost importance to leverage the arts to help us grow, and that was our reasoning behind this initiative.” “It’s about making our community better through art.” Long an ambassador for the arts, Guidry programs events within Basin

Arts, officially a nonprofit 501 C3, including a critique night, artist’s talk, Runaway Dish, a five-course dinner with art components, and a “first listen” for Sean Bruce’s new album, “Along the Edges,” where Guidry will interpret the music and paint live. He is also program manager for Bare Walls, a subscription-based program where artists can put work up for sale or rent to a non-conventional art space. The service is operated through Basin Arts and creates ongoing relationships between businesses and local artists, resulting in residual income to the artists. Originally from Galliano, Louisiana, his large-scale abstracts and portraiture are fine art level and his exhibition, “Materialize” recently opened at Basin Arts. He holds a BFA from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and works as a full-time artist.

Waiting for the beginning of the fall season for signiﬁcant maintenance will not only make your home look neglected it could diminish its value. A healthy lawn will make your home standout and help strengthen the overall value of homes in your neighborhood. Below are key lawn tips for watering, weeding and keeping your grass clippings to spruce up your lawn during the summer months.

Water A rich, lush lawn in the summer requires regular hydration. Ensuring your lawn is watered regularly will help with the growth and nutrition of your lawn. If possible, your lawn should have at least an inch of water once a week from manual or natural irrigation. While it is tempting in the summer months, try not to overwater your lawn. Overwatering will eventually cause your lawn to not fertilize properly due to too much irrigation.
