A sampling of places to dine with kids BY CHERÉ COEN

Special to The Advocate Eating out with children can be challenging. First, the restaurant must be agreeable to youngsters with their occasional erratic behavior, and second, it’s imperative that parents enjoy themselves as well. Lafayette restaurants offer many opportunities for children and the choices vary. Here are a few suggestions on places where kids are welcome.

Buffets One thing parents love as much as children are buffets, where one price allows both to eat their ﬁll of a variety of options. Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen, a fast-food empire that began in New Orleans, lays out its only all-you-can-eat buffet in the country in Lafayette’s Oil Center. Food personality Anthony Bourdain was so enamored with this unique Popeye’s offering, he dined there three days in a row when visiting Acadiana for his TV show, “Parts Unknown.” Visitors may indulge in all the chicken, biscuits and mac and cheese they desire for $9. Todd Billiot prefers the family-oriented Sicily’s Ultimate Italian Buffet in Broussard “because they have a variety of food — salad, pizza, baked foods, stews, pastas, étouffées, deserts, etc. — that make it easy for little picky eaters. Lots of sports teams and kids from the nearby sports complex eat there often.” For a healthier buffet, try the salad bar at Jason’s Deli, where kids — and parents — may follow up with cones from the soft-serve machine.

Casual Even though Don’s Seafood remains popular with adults, it’s tolerant of children, said Darrelyn Saloom, a Lafayette writer. “And it’s noisy, so if your kids are noisy, it’s ﬁne,” Saloom said. Hub City Diner, Picadilly, Roly Poly and Red Robin offer healthy choices, said family counselor Emilia J. Bellone of Lafayette. And Pizza Artista cooks up pizzas with glouten free, organic and vegan options. For those with an “envie” for Cajun cooking, Rob Harris Boutin’s in Carencro features an affordable menu for the

whole family.

Entertaining Keeping children entertained while enjoying a meal is half the battle. Parents who want to choose restaurants that keep kids occupied may try Pete’s on Johnson’s, where numerous TVs broadcast sports, or Hub City Diner, which serves kids meals in cardboard vintage car boxes. Dean-O’s Pizza and Walk-Ons have rooms with arcade games. Many restaurants choose a day of the week for family discounts or special events. On Tuesdays, for instance, Broaddus Burgers brings in a balloon artist and kids ages 10 and under eat free with the purchase of an adult meal, said owner Shawn Broaddus. This past June, Olde Tyme Grocery on St. Mary Street by the ULL campus, which has been serving up po’ boys and plate lunches since 1982, hosted an all-ages talent show.

Downtown Downtown Lafayette remains a great place to bring children for its family museums and the refreshing San Souci splash fountain. When small appetites emerge, Dat Dog may be a fun outing with its colorful décor and innovative menu that turns the basic hot dog on its head, including serving up non-meat varieties. Lafayette writer and editor Erin Bass enjoys Central Pizza with her daughter, which does the same for the Italian standard. Bass recommends sitting in the window overlooking Jefferson Street while enjoying artisanal pizzas and letting children watch downtown people stroll by.

Dessert What child doesn’t love a visit to someplace sweet and Lafayette has several delectable spots, including being home to the last free-standing Borden’s Ice Cream Shoppe in America, a spot that’s been popular with locals for decades. For something more upscale, Indulge in Parc Lafayette serves up all things sweets, from elegant pastries and cakes to gourmet chocolates and one of the most indulgent ice cream shakes you’ll ever enjoy. Both establishments host children’s birthday parties as well.
