Creating flow in a home Lafayette local gives organizing a personal touch BY PATRICIA GANNON Contributing writer
It’s often said that cleanliness is next to godliness. According to Melissa Marcotte, organization is at the top of the list also. “A clean space means a clean mind,” said Marcotte. “It frees you up to direct energy to other parts of your life when you’re not searching for things.” Marcotte is the founder and consultant behind FLOW, which stands for Fostering Lifestyles of Wellness. An organizational expert herself, she has decided to do for others what she loves and does best — render order from chaos. “It is essentially all about wellness — mental space and physical space,” she said. “I think you have to be individual about systems, determine for people what makes sense for them that they’re willing to maintain. Organization with FLOW is not quite as rigid.” Marcotte says Marie Kondo’s popular concept of removing anything that fails to “spark joy” doesn’t necessarily work for everyone. Kondo is a Japanese organizing consultant who has written four books on decluttering and currently has a Netflix series, “Tidying up with Marie Kondo,” where she visits families and helps them get organized. “I don’t believe children actually enjoy folding their clothes,” said Marcotte. “You don’t want a one-time setup that won’t last.” “There is no one size fits all.” Originally from New Orleans, Marcotte attended college at the Universi-

She charges by the hour and will estimate for the job. “Once I meet someone, I assess their goals and develop a personalized guide. For instance, a command center for school kids and their routines.” Marcotte, who worked as a paraprofessional in special education and as a long-term substitute teacher, discovered early on each child had a different way to learn and adapt. Her experiences formed the basis for her organizational expertise with study spaces. “You can’t rubber stamp everything,” she said. “Twenty-seven kids in a class and you can’t put your hands on something? That’s a long day.” Aside from office and study space, another important focus is the kitchen. She theorizes if that’s running right it feeds the rest of the home as well as life in general. “If you’re not chaotically trying to put a meal together, it brings
peace.” A certified integrative nutrition health coach, she says you can actually spot an angry kitchen. “I used to sell wine in a shop attached to a bistro,” she said. “When the restaurant changed chefs, everything else changed too. There’s something to it.” Marcotte got her concept for FLOW by organizing for friends and relatives, including her own son. “From first grade on, he was ADD, so it was papers and remembering things. He’s in college now, and creating a calendar system for him is what prompted me to look up other systems. The fewer steps to achieve something the better.” “I do my mother every time I go visit her. I also inherited my father’s care, and medications, and I organize my cousins and friends. I have one friend who’s moved twice. I’ve helped by eliminating things when she’s packing and setting up in the new home.” Her moving day method is meticulous. “Insofar as I color-coded the boxes and made a numbered inventory of
what’s in each box. If you don’t unpack right away, at least you know where things are.” “It’s hard for me to believe everyone doesn’t do this,” she said. Home sellers should be aware that an organized closet is an attribute when it comes to marketing a home. “It maximizes closet space,” Marcotte explained. “You can make anything look like you have more storage.” Even Jolie, Marcotte’s Great Dane, is organized. Her dogfood is in two, huge, see-through tubs with a cup scoop that’s entirely separate from the cat. There’s also a dog cabinet and a cat cabinet. “Jolie knows the treat cabinet is not the kitchen cabinet. It saves a lot of false alarms and expectations,” she laughed. “Organization saves you time and money. Tips for porch and deck maintenance Summertime provides ideal weather to enjoy your home’s porch or deck. Like your home’s interior, you should keep your exterior clean and in good shape for optimal comfort. Here are some tips for porch or deck maintenance. CLEANING: Sweep your deck and remove debris trapped in between your deck boards. A simple spray of water with a garden hose can remove dirt. Bleach will discolor your deck and wire brush can damage wood. To remove mold and mildew purchase a deck cleaning solution. Some cleaners can be harmful to plants so make sure they are removed or covered before applying a solution. REPAIRING: Wear and tear from weather can damage your porch. Conduct a visual inspection for loose boards and nails. Small issues can be repaired by removing the boards, flipping and refastening them. Splinters in wood can be sanded down. If you see rotting wood under the boards, you may need to consult a professional for repairs. If your boards are cracked, it is a sign that it needs to be stained. If boards on your deck are split, you will need to completely replace the damaged board. STAINING: If your deck is cleaned and repaired you may want to consider adding a stain for a refreshed look. It is time for a new stain if your deck does not repel water easily. You should follow the manufacturer’s directions for any stain or seal you apply. Drying time depends on the temperature and humidity level. Avoid applying any product to your deck or porch in the direct sun which will dry out the finish too quickly. DECORATING: New patio or deck décor can liven up any outdoor space. Avoid
