Fall gardening begins with preparing beds Popular autumn plants include flowers that attract pollinators BY CHERÉ COEN Contributing writer
Temperatures may still be too hot to inspire us to garden, but now’s the best time to start preparing for fall planting, said Lafayette Parish Master Gardener and Master Naturalist Stacy Lee. Lee suggests cleaning out weeds from garden beds and getting ahead of winter weeds, removing unwanted trees and shrubs that may have taken root during the summer, creating a compost heap and making a list of fall and winter vegetables, herbs and pollinators to put in the ground over the next few months. Start by removing plants that have established themselves in garden beds, Lee said, being careful not to spread the plants’ seeds so they emerge in other areas of your yard. For trash trees and other unwanted large plants, use the “cut and paint method,” cutting a few inches above ground and then applying triclopyr on the stump with a small paintbrush. “It will take that toxin with it and the roots will die,” Lee explained, adding that the chemical will not enter the water system if applied carefully. “Some plants are hardier than others, and you may have to do it twice,” she added. Because gardens need a good cleaning at the end of summer, fall is a good time to build a compost. By spring, those old garden clippings broken down over winter may be used as fertilizer for the garden. To get ahead of winter weeds, especially burweed with its Velcro-like spikes, use a pre-emergent herbicide in October on your lawn. “If you had burweed this year it will be worse next year if you don’t get on top of it,” Lee said. “The goal is not to have a pretty lawn, it’s to keep it safe for your pets and children.” Planting herbs and vegetables in fall and winter brings forth food for the

Some of Lee’s favorite herbs for fall include cilantro, catnip, dill and parsley, the last two a favorite for black swallowtail caterpillars who turn into stunning butterflies. Edible perennials to consider are green onions, chives, mint, rosemary and oreganos, Lee said, and for those who love mums she suggests choosing perennial mums that attract pollinators. One flower Lee loves to use in her fall garden is goldenrod, which has been commonly confused with ragweed. “Pollinators love it and it’s not bad for allergies, the way people have been told,” she said. Butterflies arrive around flowering plants in late summer and fall with Oc-
tober a banner month, Lee said. “October is a great month because pollinators are extremely active,” she said, adding that visitors can view the Lafayette Parish Master Gardeners’ butterfly demonstration beds — and other demo gardens — at the Ira Nelson Horticulture Center on the UL-Lafayette campus. Some hummingbirds spend the winter in South Louisiana, while others migrate through in fall and spring. To attract both species to your yard, Lee suggests ornamentals such as Turks cap, buckeye and cross vines, all native to Louisiana. Other plants that attract hummingbirds are cana, angel trumpets, flowering maples, aloe, salvias, firecracker vine and altheas. As for trees, for the most part, those
planted in October will need watering but late November through winter will not, Lee explained. “Once a tree is established, you don’t have to water it,” she said. Lee suggests planting native satsumas, a hardy tree that survives freezes, produces fruit and attracts giant swallowtails. To purchase plants and receive gardening advice, visit the Lafayette Master Gardeners’ annual Plant Fest on Sept. 28 at the Ira Nelson Horticulture Center. Living in your home after retirement As baby boomers age, many are opting to stay in their homes instead of moving after retirement. If you are among the growing population of aging adults, it is important to make sure your home has both long- and short-term solutions to ensure your safety and comfort throughout your golden years. Here are several tips to help make sure any environment is optimal for aging in place. LIGHTING. Without proper illumination throughout your home, you may be exposing yourself to a potential slip and fall. Night or security lights inside and outside your home allow you to safely walk around when it is dark. Recessed lighting fixtures in common areas and hallways are also options to consider. FURNITURE. Examine the seating options available in your home. Do you have a sofa or chair that is too soft or too low? Certain types of seating can make it difficult to sit or get up easily. Consider adding appropriately firm furniture options to your home. Chairs or sofas higher off the ground with arms can minimize discomfort. WALKWAYS. Any type of throw rug or bath mat can become a tripping hazard if they are not properly secured. If you do not want to remove your rug, non-slips pads help but they are not a foolproof option. Apply double-sided carpet tape or caulk to securely attach the rug to the floor. The limitation with this option is that the floor underneath may be damaged if not set properly. KITCHEN. There is an array of appliances to improve your ease of use around the kitchen. Lever-handle faucets with a pullout spray, a raised dishwasher to avoid back strain and a side-by-side refrigerator with slide-out shelves are options. Other modifications to your kitchen, such
