Taking Center Stage Local theater companies envision growth

Live theater has found a niche — in fact several niches — in Acadiana. Local theater companies offer everything from Pulitzer prize-winning plays to experimental works by new playwrights. In addition to entertainment, they offer a boost to the business districts and neighborhoods near their performance spaces. Scott Gremillion and Cooper Helm, founders of Lauren-Reilly Eliot Company, have as their mission producing high-quality compelling performances that sustains the community. And despite the digital age, they’re not about to be relegated to backstage. “There’s a degree of separation with devices,” said Gremillion. “When it’s live, you’re transported. You can’t replicate or duplicate that on a device.” “It will stand the test of time,” said Helm. “There’s a millennial who comes to see our plays, and he’s on his phone streaming all the time.” The two founded LRE in 2012 after Helm played his last role in Baton Rouge and ended up in Lafayette not doing theater. Gremillion, also from Baton Rouge, worked as a rock musician for 15 years and was also floating, looking for an artistic direction. Both began talking plays. “I booked ‘Buried Child’ by Sam Shepard as a director with no cast, no crew, anything. I needed a stage manager,” said Helm, who convinced Gremillion to take on the job. “The audience was blown away. It moved them.” Today, LRE performs well-established plays and Pulitzer Prize winners and has employed 120 in 19 plays. While most of their work is staged at Cite des Arts and Acadiana Center for the Arts, they have their eye on a new theater. “One of our goals is to look beyond, to branch out and pull people from all over the city, to bring people from outside downtown,” said Gremillion. “Also spending evenings downtown, both pre and post theater.” “You don’t have to go to New York or Los Angeles. You can have theater right

here,” added Helm. “That’s my vision. Rehearsal space and a place to teach our classes. Looking for investors, getting the city involved, building a theater.” “Lafayette’s going to be the hub. It’s geographically perfect. This is a perfect place for growth.”
Eunice Players’ Theatre sits between two locally owned businesses. Ruby’s, now renamed Nick’s on Second Street, is a popular pre- and post-theater destination. Theater not only entertains audiences, it regenerates town centers.
New theatrical works On the other end of the spectrum, Acadiana Repertory Theatre’s Steven Landry performs experimental material. “We are the only theater in the Acadiana area focused solely on the development of new work and emerging voices of the American theater,” said Landry. “We work with playwrights from across the country who have work that has yet to be produced. The work we do allows the people of Acadiana to be in on the bottom floor of brand new theatrical work and gives them a way to get involved with theater that many communities don’t have.”
Community theaters Eunice, Abbeville, and New Iberia frequently sell out their community theater performances, and no one knows that better than Jody Powell of Eunice Players’ Theatre. “It’s very well-supported, a tradition,” said Powell. “Local business people got this thing going fifty years ago and got the city involved. We still rent the building from the city. We use people from
the community. You’re going to see your kids’ teacher, the bank teller.” “When I was doing ‘To Kill a Mockingbird,’ I passed a church pew on a gentleman’s porch. I didn’t know him, he didn’t know me, but the theater had a reputation and he loaned it.” In a town of 10,000, Eunice Players’ season membership totals between 350 and 375 patrons. When the city addresses attracting business, it mentions tax base, schools, and theater as part of the cultural fabric. “Godspell” had a grandma, a mother, and a daughter,” said Powell. “There’s a lot of family carry-on.” Seeing that community theater carries on in general is Mitu Dasgupta, board member of Stage Backers, a small nonprofit that believes theater is the heart and soul of the community. A past actor,
she wasn’t always aware of the costs. Enter five-year-old Stage Backers, who helps fund local productions. “Lights cost money, so do rights,” she said. “Expenses are getting more and more. Whoever has asked us, we have helped with whatever they asked.” That said, Dasgupta says communities don’t always do enough. She also sees the lack of a stand-alone theater in Lafayette as an obstacle. “I’m not talking about large, traveling plays or the Heymann Center, but of the acting community within the community. Smaller communities are flourishing because they stand behind theater. Theater is very important to a community. It should hold a community together. We need the community’s support.” “How many times can you fly to New York or London?”

5 reasons women pursue construction trades The residential construction industry provides a rewarding career path for women. Builders and remodelers in Acadiana are seeking skilled artisans and professionals, including carpenters, architects, engineers, plumbers, electricians and painters. With women making up about half of the workforce in the U.S., here are some reasons why women should consider pursuing a fulfilling career in the trades.
Competitive salary A pay gap exists between men and women across most industries. On average, women in the United States earn 80 cents for every dollar a man earns. However, the gap is much smaller in the construction trades. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, women in the construction industry earn 97 cents for every dollar a man earns.
Job opportunities Unfilled jobs in the construction sector reached a post-recession high earlier this year. A National Association of Home Builders survey found shortages of labor in various types of construction jobs including framers, carpenters, plumbers, electricians and bricklayers. The residential construction industry is one of the few sectors where demand for new workers has risen.
Scholarships Funding is available for students who are interested in or currently pursuing opportunities in residential construction. The National Housing Endowment offers several student scholarships and programs and the American Council for Construction Education has resources available for students interested in teaching opportunities in the field.

There is a growing community of women in construction who are willing to mentor and share insights with women entering the field. The National Center for Women’s Equity in Apprenticeship and Employment, a consortium of groups representing tradeswomen’s organizations around the country, also offers opportunities for women in the

Sense of accomplishment Working in the trades brings a sense of satisfaction for completing high-quality work that contributes to home building and ultimately helping to fulfill the American Dream. Darylene Dennon, the first tradeswoman to chair the NAHB Professional Wom-
en in Building Council, highlighted the benefits of being a woman in the trades: “I was raised to think that if you do a good job, people will appreciate it. And always learn a trade.
