If two women putting their heads together is a problem solved, imagine what three can do. Debbey Ryan, Elaine Alderman, and Anita Link have formed the Lafayette Women’s Chamber of Commerce, the first women’s chamber in state history, according to Ryan. The nonprofit’s kick-off event was in August. “We’ve been working on it for a few years, since 2010,” said Ryan, founder, president and CEO, who formerly was involved with the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, now One Acadiana, for decades as a board and committee member. The women said that a general dissatisfaction with the workings of the chamber, including the revamping that came with the namge change, led to their decision to start a new organization. “They refer to themselves as regional. Identity has been lost,” said Alderman, a Realtor with Keller Williams and CFO/co-founder of the new Women’s Chamber. “They changed the entire complexion — name, mission, and focus,” said Ryan. The focus of the nascent Women’s Chamber is empowering entrepreneurs. “There are more female business owners, but not in the big dog positions,” said Ryan. Anita Link of Team Link is COO and co-founder of the Women’s Chamber. She has been with St. Pierre Promotional Products for two years. “In my limited experience, some women joined the larger chamber and didn’t receive benefit,” she said. “Microbusinesses are underserved.” “If we can have every independent business rise to a level of success

The new organization welcomes franchises and men, and does not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, or creed. Although not officially launching until January, anyone can join currently and become a founding member, entitling them to be on the founder’s list and receive acknowledgment. The added benefit is that dues won’t go up unless there’s a lapse and nonrenewal. The Women’s Chamber is not politically affiliated.
“We’re not a political organization and will not take a position to endorse a candidate,” said Alderman. “There will be a legislative liaison committee if there’s a need, because we want to be informed about what’s going on first in Lafayette.” The group had its soft launch recently at a kickoff party held at Dat Dog in Downtown Lafayette. “There were over 120 at the kickoff, so many we lost track,” said Ryan. “It was so positive, everyone was thrilled to be there. I never expected my teaser on Facebook to blow up.”
Ryan says the organizations webpage has received 500 emails and over 5,000 unique page visits, and so far, has been warmly received. Calls are coming in from surrounding communities and everyone gets one ribbon cutting a year. “Women aren’t aware of what’s out there,” she said. “There are so many resources available.” For now, it’s rather clear what three women can do. “We’re making history,” said Ryan. “We’re going to be the Disneyworld of Chambers.”

Many house fires can be avoided Every year, home fires claim the lives of close to 3,000 Americans and cause around $6 billion in damage. While fire deaths in the home are dropping — largely due to fire safety awareness and home building codes and techniques – far too many people in the United States die each year of something that is often preventable. When it comes to household fires, the best way to survive one is to simply avoid having a fire start in your home. Practice diligence when working with or around the most common fire hazards in a home. COOKING –– Cooking leads to more house fires than any other single source. By far the greatest factor in kitchen fires is unattended cooking. Never leave the kitchen while cooking, especially when using oil or high temperatures. And if oil does ever catch fire in a kitchen, never, ever use water to attempt to put it out. This will spread the fire. Calmly turn off the heat source or remove the pan from the heat, attempt to smother the flames with a metal lid or flour, or use a fire extinguisher if all else fails. HEATING EQUIPMENT –– Have chimneys/ fireplaces cleaned and inspected once a year. Never set clothes or shoes on a radiator or space heater to dry. Never leave space heaters on overnight or when you leave the home and only use space heaters that shut off automatically when tipped over. SMOKING –– Smoking is the number one cause of home fire deaths and also has a very simple solution: never smoke indoors. The vast majority of smoking fires start in a bedroom, so
don’t smoke in your bed. ELECTRICITY –– Overloaded circuits and misuse of extension cords, multi-outlet converters and power are other leading causes of home electrical fires. Never use extension cords, power strips or multi-outlet converters for appliances; all appliances should be plugged directly into a wall outlet. Use only appropriate bulbs in lighting fixtures; higher wattage light bulbs may cause overheating. Overreliance on extension cords, power strips or multi-outlet converters is a sign that more wall outlets may need to be installed in a room or home. CANDLES –– One-third of candle fires start in the bedroom; make sure that candles are on a stable surface and won’t be knocked over. Be very alert during the holidays: Candles + wrapping paper + dried Christmas trees = a fire waiting to happen. FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS –– Vapors can ignite from high temperatures or small sparks from static electricity or other sources. Don’t store flammables like gasoline and certain cleaning agents near a heating source. They should be kept outside the home in a cool, ventilated area. CLOTHES DRYERS –– Clean the lint filter after every load. Also clean any lint from around the drum, and around the housing for the lint filter. At least once per year check the air exhaust pipe to the exterior of the home and ensure there is no blockage.

Let your inner artist carve up a pumpkin l
Metro Media Toothy grins and a mesmerizing orange glow help make jack-o’-lanterns captivating sights come Halloween. Pumpkin carving is an autumn tradition and runs the gamut of simple designs to more intricate artwork worthy of any medium. Although anyone can grab a pumpkin and get started, when done correctly, jack-o’-lantern designs can last for several days. START WITH A FRESH PUMPKIN. Look for pumpkins that have a thick, green stem. These usually are fresh and haven’t been handled much. A thick stem also may indicate fleshier pumpkin walls that can be carved more easily. Avoid pumpkins that are soft or full of blemishes, or those that have dried, shriveled stems. CUT A HOLE IN THE BACK. Rather than impeding the structural integrity of the pumpkin by cutting off the top and the stem for interior access, cut a hole in the back of the pumpkin. This will still make it easy to reach inside and clean out the pumpkin. SCOOP OUT THE PULP AND SEEDS. Be sure to thoroughly clean the inside of the pumpkin. Leaving the pulpy, stringy matter and seeds inside can cause the pumpkin to rot that much faster and produce a foul odor. Scoopers, spoons and even hand shovels can help. KEEP IT COOL. Heat can adversely affect carved pumpkins, so work in a cool area and store the pumpkin in a cold garage or refrigerator if you need a few extra days before displaying it. Also, carving experts suggest using an electric light inside rather than a candle; by using a candle, you’re essentially cooking the pumpkin from the inside. WORK IN YOUR LAP. When carving faces or intricate designs, looking down onto the pumpkin provides more control. DON’T CUT ALL THE WAY THROUGH. Many pumpkin designers end up shaving or scraping off the outer rind of the pumpkin, but leave a delicate orange film underneath. Light can still shine through, but the design will not collapse on itself as easily if you were to cut straight through the pumpkin wall. Experiment with different tools to achieve the desired look. MAINTAIN THE FRESHNESS. Rubbing exposed areas of the pumpkin flesh with petro-

All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day are Christian religious observances, particularly among Roman Catholics. All Saints’ Day is a Catholic Holy Day of Obligation that requires individuals to attend services. The day commemorates and is dedicated to all of the saints of the Church, or those who have attained heavenly entry. All Saints’ Day is celebrated on Nov. 1 each year in Western churches, and on the first Sunday after Pentecost in Eastern churches. All Souls’ Day follows All Saints’ Day on Nov. 2 and is a solemn celebration in the Catholic Church that commemorates those who have died and are now waiting in Purgatory. All Souls’ Day is sometimes referred to as the Feast of All Souls. The idea of All Souls’ Day is not just to remember the dead, but to utilize prayer to help the sins of the deceased be forgiven so they can be released from Purgatory and eventually welcomed into God’s presence in heaven. The key distinction between All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day is one day is for commemorating known saints and the deceased who have reached heaven, and the other is for honoring those who have not yet reached heaven.
