Abbeville gets set to break lots of eggs Two days of festivities culiminate in cooking a giant omelette Confrerie D’Abbeville invites the public to Abbeville’s “5000 Egg” Giant Omelette Celebration Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 3 and 4. Two days of family friendly festivities in historic downtown Abbeville culminate Sunday evening with preparation of a giant omelette. The event is modeled on the Easter Omelette Festival in Bessieres, France. Seven sister cities worldwide celebrate the omelette, but Abbeville is the only one in the United States. Each year representatives of the others — Bessieres, France; Frejus, France; Dumbea, New Caledonia; Granby, Quebec in Canada.; Malmedy, Belgium and Pigue, Argentina — come to prepare the omelette and experience the area’s joie de vivre. The
omelette is then given away freely to all in attendance. Live music and an arts and crafts show are part of the celebration from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Saturday features a display of antique farm implements and a Tractor Egg Cracking contest. Sunday, antique cars will be on display. The Giant Omelette Ride kicks off Sunday’s activities with 6 a.m. registration. Visit www.latrail.org for details. At 9 a.m., the festival’s official mass is at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church. Fix-It Café encourages No Waste mentality

Fix It Café is an event that aims to reduce waste by allowing people to bring in their broken items that might otherwise end up in landfills to be repaired for free. The event is hosted by No Waste Lafayette, a local chapter of No Waste Louisiana, which aims to use environmental education to help individuals, businesses and governments reduce needless and avoidable waste. “Waste is throwing away, burying or burning resources that could be used to create jobs and improve the economy,” said Catherine S. Comeaux, head of the No Waste Lafayette chapter. “Reducing waste keeps resources in the flow of the economy and reduces the need to muck up the environment by trying to mine, grow, drill for, cut down or import more resources.” Fixers, which mostly consist of volunteers, will be on hand at the event to make repairs in the categories of clothing, jewelry, bikes, small appliances, small furniture, household items and electronics. This will mark the fourth Fix It Café event of the year hosted by No Waste Lafayette, and the organization has no plans to stop anytime soon since they feel the event helps to foster a no waste mentality. “We want to keep things out of the landfill, but more than that we want to cultivate a fix-it mentality in the community,” said Comeaux, “There are many people out there who know how to do minor repairs or just have an eye for creative fixes to make broken objects useful again. The Fix-It Café brings all these folks together to share skills, creativity and ideas.” People are encouraged to hang out while their items are being repaired to enjoy snacks and coffee served in a no waste format, which means real dishes and package-free goods. “In the past, we’ve served home-baked

It can be logistically challenging, but we like the challenge.” The No Waste Lafayette chapter formed to promote zero waste at personal family and community levels, and to push for improvements to waste reduction measures, recycling and composting in Lafayette. The group hopes to inform and influence the adoption of a better parish-wide waste management contract and to see other waste reduction measures implemented.
“Ideally, we want to educate city-parish council members about ways that our city curbside waste management contract could encourage residents to reduce trash and improve on recycling, composting and reusing resources,” said Comeaux. “We’d also like to see programs to facilitate permanent paint reclamation, e-waste collection, pay-as-you throw and only accepting compostable bags at our compost facility.” This month’s Fix-It Café will take place on Nov. 10, at Deuxieme Vie Creative Reuse Center from 9 a.m. to noon in downtown Lafayette, and is open to the public, who are encouraged to bring in their broken items for repair.

Port Barre Cracklin Festival The Port Barre Cracklin Festival, Nov. 8 to 11, showcases the ritual of making cracklins — a traditional Louisiana food that has made headlines on such cooking reality shows such as Top Chef. Watchdog organizations like the Better Business Bureau warn against donating to charities over the telephone, but reports indicate that fraudsters are still using robocalls to great effect as they prey on donors’ generous natures. According to the Federal Trade Commission, consumers report losing hundreds of millions of dollars a year to robocalls, a scam used by perpetrators of fraud in which donations to bogus charities are solicited over the phone. While some people may be surprised to learn such scams are still effective, a report from YouMail, a free robocall-blocking service, sheds some light on just how common robocalls are. According to YouMail, in July 2018, 1,591 robocalls were placed every second. That means roughly 137.5 million such calls are made every day. And the people behind these calls are very clever, sometimes using famous people’s actual voices to convince innocent people of a bogus charity’s legitimacy.

Holiday-giving budget can reduce future worries Metro Media A holiday budget can help people avoid post-holiday blues caused by overspending and the resulting consumer debt. Many people admit to spending more than they initially intended to spend during the holiday season, leaving them with sizable bills to pay later. This trend is dubbed the “holiday hangover.” MagnifyMoney found that Americans racked up an average of $1,054 of debt during the 2017 holiday season, a 5 percent increase over 2016. Recent data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York says consumer credit card debt stands at $808 billion. A portion of that ongoing debt is accumulated during the holidays — but it doesn’t have to be. By establishing a budget and a plan to pay down their debt, consumers can enjoy the holidays without as much money-related stress. First, make a list of all the people with whom you intend to exchange gifts. Jot down charitable gifts and entertaining/ social expenses. Consider holiday events you’d like to attend as well. Next think about a total dollar amount to earmark for the holidays. This amount
is something that you should be able to comfortably pay off in full at the end of the holiday season — no more than a month or two after New Year’s Day. Do not feel obligated to purchase more than one gift for each person on your list. Parents who want to have a few extra items under the tree for their children or who have to finance presents from Santa Claus can set aside more money to make such purchases. However, these gifts should also be factored into the overall budget. Friends and coworkers may receive less than family members. It’s important to keep track of spending even after the budget has been created. This way you can see if you are adhering to your budget. Record gifts as you would checks in a register. Take home receipts and tally your spending. Make adjustments as necessary to stay on track. If this year was a banner year in terms of finances, you may be able to afford more. If it wasn’t, you may have to cut back. True friends and close family members should understand that the value of the gift is not based on its price tag. With a budget in hand, consumers can avoid holiday hangover and enter the new year with less worry about debt.

How to get the most out of a home inspection need attention. After the inspection, the inspector will provide you with a report. You can then determine if you will ask the seller to make any repairs or give you a credit to make the repairs on your own. It’s important to keep in mind that no home is perfect. But the inspection report should help you determine if it’s the perfect home for you.
The home buying process is both exciting and overwhelming at the same time. Even with the help of professionals, your checklist is likely long. And one of the most important items that should be at the top of your list is scheduling a home inspection. Although not required by law, many lenders do require a home inspection, which helps protect the large investment you are about to make. It’s important to learn as much as you can about the physical condition of the home before you buy it, to ensure it’s a sound investment. And while an inspection cannot guarantee the condition of a home, the inspector can alert you to items that need repair or any safety concerns. Here are a few things to keep in mind about the home inspection process. Schedule your inspection as soon as possible It is the buyer’s responsibility to schedule and pay for the inspection. You should schedule the home inspection as soon as you can after your offer has been accepted. This ensures you’ll have enough time to request repairs or to get out of the contract if the inspector discovers a deal-breaker for you. When choosing an inspector, your Realtor may have a recommendation or you can find one through the American Society of Home Inspectors. This includes pointing out what components and systems may need major repair

Ask the inspector if you can follow him or her around to better understand what they are examining and to ask questions if needed. This is a great way for you to get to know your new home and become familiar with areas that may

Before you go to settlement, you and your builder will do a walkthrough to conduct a final inspection. This walk-through provides an opportunity to spot items which may need to be corrected or adjusted, learn about the way your new home works and ask questions about anything you don’t understand. Create a checklist when inspecting the house. The list should include everything that needs attention, and you and your builder should agree to a timetable for repairs. It is important that you be thorough and observant during the walk-through. Examine the surfaces of counters, fixtures, floors and walls carefully for possible damage. Sometimes disputes arise because a buyer may discover a gouge in a counter top after move-in, and there is no way to prove whether it was caused by the builder’s workers or the buyer’s movers.
