Residents agree their neighborhood’s a keeper

A stone’s throw from St. Pius and Pinhook are the Stone Roads — Cobblestone, Fieldstone, Heatherstone and Pebblestone — a well-kept Southside secret. “What I like about the neighborhood is it’s quiet and convenient to all parts of Lafayette,” said Ted Viator, longtime Lafayette event planner and landscape designer. “I think we were the first version of River Ranch with the garages in back and the alleys — it’s a great neighborhood to walk in or ride a bicycle, and Fresh Pickin’s is on the corner so we have our own convenient fresh produce.” Developed by Steve Thompson of Caldwell Banker and known for its mixed use and other traditional neighborhood development features before TND developments proliferated, the subdivision was ahead of its time. Currently, there is commercial office space, an open air market, single family dwellings and townhomes. The population is professional yet diverse, including retirees, singles, and couples. The architecture is diverse as well, with French in all its permutations — country, Creole, Acadian — and here and there, the unmistakable Quarter wrought iron balconies alongside one-story cottage. Here and there is a whiff of Cape Cod and even a sleek contemporary, such as that belonging to UL Lafayette Assistant Professor Lise Anne Slatten, a 20-year-resident with her husband Jim. They’ve seen the area expanded twice because of its location and value. “We are walking distance to Great Harvest Bread Company, Fontana Center, St. Pius Church, Fresh Pickin’s, and just a short drive to the movie theater, three hospitals, Pizza Village, Target, and Costco,” said Slatten. “Over the years, the growth in Lafayette has been in this direction which has allowed our property to maintain its value. Because we are between Kaliste Saloom Road and Verot School Road — we have great city services, easy access to Camellia Blvd and it is relatively quiet.” Add to that tranquility and little traffic, developers in their infinite wisdom did not provide a cut-through between the two major thoroughfares. “We have the

We even take turns mowing each other’s lawns.” Transplanted Orleanian Melissa Marcotte moved here from Shreveport two years ago and is one of those strolling along with her Great Dane, Jolie. “When I started, I knew I wanted low yard maintenance, but I knew I didn’t want a cookie

cutter neighborhood. I just waited for one to pop up. And it did.” “I love the location, that every home is unique. It’s a beautiful place to walk and peek in the courtyards.” “This neighborhood has personality.” Marcotte and her neighbor Claudia Lyles have recently spearheaded a Neighborhood Watch program, designed to conserve and protect the neighborhood’s particular personality. Painter and collector Emma Kean lives here with her feline companions, Maine Coon Miles and Bob, a tuxedo cat. She’s been here since 2001. “That’s the second

time I’ve moved here; the first was in 1986,” she said. Kean had previously lived in Fernewood and Pirates Alley and hadn’t planned to move back a second time when her Realtor found the house. “I liked the privacy, the property, the people I know — the patio — it’s perfect. And peaceful. Everything starts with a ‘P,’ ” she laughed. “I knew right when I walked in — the cypress ceiling and all the wall space for paintings.” However, in the end, it’s not just architecture or accessibility, it’s Stone Roads’ simple old-school attitude. “While recovering from surgery six years ago, my husband walked with me in the neighborhood every day to build up my strength and stamina,” said Slatten. “We started with short walks and gradually increased the time and distance each day. It was nice to hear words of encouragement along the way as I got stronger and could make it further.” “Simple acts of kindness are everywhere.”

NEW IBERIA — The Cajun Rodeo Association Finals Rodeo presented by Jane’s Seafood and Chinese Restaurant and Allstream Services and Rentals will return to the Sugarena at Acadiana Fairgrounds for the second year in a row. The CRA Finals Rodeo will bring the top cowboys and cowgirls to New Iberia from across the state of Louisiana on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. Along with St. Martinville’s own, funnyman, Heath “The Dancin Cajun” Breaux and professional rodeo announcer, Blue Jeanes of Winnie, Texas, you will see the best that the CRA has to offer. Downsizing done right: simplify your move Get support from friends and family or hire professionals to make transition easier Are you ready to downsize to a smaller home but don’t know where to start? For many seniors, moving or downsizing to a smaller home can be emotionally challenging. After raising a family or spending a good portion of their adult lives in one home, it is often difficult to think about putting it on the market. Yet, the process does not have to be as stressful as you might imagine. In fact, a new industry of “senior move managers” was created to help baby boomers transition to the next phase of their lives. The National Association of Senior Move Managers, nasmm.org, provides senior move resources and a directory of senior move managers across the country. Because of the memories associated with a home and its belongings collected over a lifetime, it can be difficult for seniors—and often their family members and loved ones—to make decisions about what to keep and what to give away. Here are the three key things seniors should consider before they

begin the downsizing process.

Give yourself time It is hard to imagine moving out of a home you have lived in for so long. Likewise, organizing all of the steps involved in a move can be overwhelming. Be sure to give yourself enough time to process the changes that will be taking place.

Gather a support network It is important to have support. Downsizing can be physically and emotionally draining for both you and your family. Make sure you have a support system in place before you begin the process. This task is too arduous to take on alone. If family or friends are not available, senior move managers can be a great option to consider.
